Explore Alaska’s wilderness by boat and savor Dungeness crab amid the hospitality of a historic Alaska lodge. At George Inlet Lodge, board your vessel and cruise the Inside Passage waterway on a journey that explores the region’s history and natural beauty. On your journey up the fjord, you’ll pass the old George Inlet Cannery, and Mahoney River Valley, home to bears, eagles, and salmon that return to spawn annually. Cross the fjord and view the Tongass National Forest in its entire splendor. A remote cove is home to Dungeness crab. Volunteers help pull crab pots, and while these crab are set free, you’ll have the opportunity to see them up close and learn about their anatomy and life cycle. Once the pots are reset, return to the lodge for a well-deserved meal that includes a beverage, oriental salad, steamed baby red potatoes, one full serving of Dungeness crab, and a slice of cheesecake smothered in Alaskan blueberries! This combination excursion gives you the opportunity to ride a historical train that has been in service for more than 50 years and participate on a scenic ride through rural countryside and tropical fields. Afterwards, board your motorcoach en route to the Tarcoles River where you’ll go on a boat and explore the spectacular natural scenery this river has to offer. The river and mangroves attract many types of bird wildlife such as toucans, spoonbills, herons, egrets, jacanas, pelicans, scarlet macaws, iguanas and crocodiles. Upon your return enjoy some live marimba melodies and enjoy a delicious buffet of seasonal fruits and tropical refreshments. Enough time will be provided to select crafts made by local artisans before returning to your ship. Note: This excursion might operate in reverse order. Please wear casual clothing, comfortable walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and bring a camera and raingear. Wildlife sightings while common cannot be guaranteed. Advance notice is needed for guests in wheelchairs; motorized scooters cannot be handled, only foldable wheelchairs. The type of walking required is along even roads and compact gravel trails. A free bird guide will be provided at the beginning of the river cruise, which will allow participants to identify any feathered creatures seen along the way. less

Our guide will meet you in the Fish House Excursion Lounge to escort you to the tram departure area. You'll discover first-hand the natural wonders of a wild southeast Alaskan rainforest on this 1 1/2 hour tour. Departing from Icy Strait Point, you and your local guide will ride a covered, wheeled tram approximately two miles through an old growth rainforest and along the shoreline where Chichagof Island meets the bountiful waters of Icy Straits. Your guides will describe the ecological and cultural significance of the forest's unique plants and animals and how the island's Native Tlingit people are bound to its rich landscape. At the beachfront turn-around, you'll have an option to explore the rocky beach on foot within view of an established bald eagle nest. Note: We recommend you bring a raincoat. less

He gave Alaska’s first motorized sightseeing tour on his “Skagway Street Car” for U.S. President Warren G. Harding in 1923 and delighted visitors for decades. Today, Martin’s tour lives on! Aboard your yellow 1927 sightseeing bus, your costumed “conductor” passes on a century of history, behind-the-scenes tales, and stories.
Explore the waterfront and National Park Historic District, enjoy the panoramic views from the scenic overlook and have your camera ready for the recounting of the Soapy Smith gunfight at the Gold Rush Cemetery. Highlighting the history of this gold rush town and the pioneer families that built it, you’ll motor through the residential neighborhoods of Skagway, famous for its flower gardens. A stop is made in town for those who want to get off to shop or explore before the tour continues back to the ship.
Note: For foreign language translation this tour utilizes a GPS activated audio narration. Guests wear comfortable headphones that deliver the complete tour narration in their chosen language. This eco-exploration includes a guided nature hike, Alaskan reindeer, a Native totem carver, raptor center and a historic sawmill at an exclusive reserve located in the forested mountains at rustic Herring Cove. This pristine natural environment is home to bald eagles, black bear, seals and a variety of birds and other species attracted by the major salmon runs in the abundant marine estuary. A naturalist will guide you along a trail through the heart of the dense forest, among tall stands of hemlock, spruce and Alaska cedar, stopping at strategically located viewing areas. At a protected, open estuary, you’ll follow Eagle Creek along an elevated wooden boardwalk overlooking grassy wetlands. Major runs of salmon return to spawn here. Listen to the symphony of bird activity in this spectacular setting. Seasonal ecosystem changes result in varying levels of wildlife activity. After a mile trail walk you'll have a chance to feed reindeer, see the historic Herring Bay Lumber Company sawmill, visit birds of prey up-close at the Alaska Wildlife Foundation’s Raptor Center, and observe a master Native totem pole carver at work. Wind through streets lined with wooden boardwalks and false fronted buildings en route to Scenic Overlook, Gold Rush Cemetery and Liarsville. Enjoy a dining experience you'll never forget at the Liarsville Gold Rush Trail Camp. Your meal is prepared over an open wood fire using recipes from 1898. Sit down for freshly grilled filet of wild Alaskan salmon, baked chicken, rice pilaf, a variety of salads, baked beans, cornbread, coffee, lemonade and dessert.
After your meal gather at the Liarsville Hippodrome where a cast of sourdoughs and dance hall girls will dazzle you with melodrama, recite Robert Service poetry and teach you the art of gold panning. You’re guaranteed to find gold in every pan! Once you've made your fortune, take time to wander through the camp and visit the general store, saloon, bordello and laundry tents to view the antiques and vintage clothing left behind. On a high-speed catamaran, travel just 17 miles to Point Adolphus, one of Alaska's premier humpback feeding grounds and whale watching destinations. These nutrient-rich waters support a wide array of other marine life including orca, Steller's sea lion, and Dall's Porpoise to name a few. Head back to Icy Strait Point, board a bus and hear about the Tlingit village of Hoonah by your local guide while en route to the Spasski River. After a beautiful drive through the interior forests and muskegs of Chicagof Island where you can watch for wildlife such as Sitka black-tailed deer, woodpeckers, bald eagles and coastal brown bear, you arrive at your destination. Enjoy a short walk on a boardwalk over the muskeg and arrive at three viewing platforms overlooking the river. Have your camera ready in case the bears happen to be out feeding. You choose where you go and what you want to see, and how long you want to stay there! Among the many options are all of the Totem Pole parks including Saxman Native Village, Potlach Park, Totem Bight State Park, and walks through the rain forest, along a beach, a stop at Herring Cove to look for wildlife in season, waterfall viewing, Ward Lake in the Tongass National Forest, and many more options. All entrance fees to attractions listed above are included in the price. A small snack will include Alaskan smoked salmon dip, cheese, crackers, & fruit as well as sodas, bottled water, coffee, tea, or juice. At the north end of town we have attractions that can include: a drive through the Ward Lake area of the Tongass National Forest. Ward Lake is lined with Sitka spruce, western hemlock and red cedar trees. While at Ward Lake passengers may wish to hike along Ward Creek Trail. Lunch Creek Trail is located at the very north end of Tongass Highway. This is a moderate to more difficult, 4.1 mile trail that begins by winding through mature cedar and spruce forest, transitioning into natural tread interspersed with boardwalk climbing through spruce stands and muskeg meadows and ending in a sub-alpine forest at Emery Tobin Lake. Scenic views include a trailside waterfall. For bit of off-roading, we take our guest up Slide Mountain for a climb in elevation of approximately 1,100 feet to a private vista viewpoint.
