Explore one of the most interesting Mayan sites in the region, a collection of ancient stone carvings dating from roughly 300 BCE to 100 BCE. These carvings were found at the Izapa Ruins and depict the Mayan ideas of the creation of the universe and their religious beliefs. Among the carvings is a particularly interesting and complex one called Stella 5 that depicts the Tree of Life as well as about a dozen human figures, animals and more. This complex carving has led to many different theories about its subject matter. Most theories concern the Mayan religious beliefs; however some involve speculation about visitors from other continents before the arrival of Columbus. The Tree of Life in the Mayan world is depicted as a Ceiba tree. This tall tree is commonly found in Chiapas and the Mayan jungles. It is easily identifiable by its extraordinary height, high crown and large, buttressed roots. For the Mayans, the tree represents a connection between the three realms of the universe- the underworld, earth and the heavens. Afterwards, take a short bus ride to Chocolate Discovery. Here, you’ll learn about the discovery and history of the sacred cacao bean and its importance to the Mayan people. Learn how the cocoa beans are transformed into chocolate right at the main square. Also, see a variety of local handcrafts and exotic flowers of the region. Local dances and marimba players will share their skills with lively performances. After a short stop to see the local church, you will be on your way back to your ship. Note: Guests should wear a hat and comfortable shoes. Bring eco-friendly sunscreen and bug repellent. See the very best of the Tracy Arm wilderness area and an exciting close-up view of the majestic twin Sawyer Glaciers. Relax in the warm, spacious cabin, surrounded by large windows on a luxurious, high-speed catamaran as you depart Juneau harbor before your ship. Enjoy a variety of complimentary snacks and beverages while watching for gleaming, blue icebergs, which often mark the shallow-water entrance to Tracy Arm. Explore this ice-carved fjord, tracing the bases of cliffs that rise 4,000 feet above the jade-colored sea, as the onboard naturalist provides information about the area. There will be frequent stops to view wildlife. Feel the mist on your face as your Captain skillfully guides the vessel almost directly under a plunging waterfall. The catamaran’s extraordinary maneuverability will allow you to get close to North Sawyer Glacier, which cannot be approached by larger ships. You’ll then cruise slowly past seals resting atop recently-carved icebergs en route to a viewing stop near the face of spectacular South Sawyer Glacier. From the topside observation deck, you’ll be able to fully experience 'white thunder,' as immense spires of ice break from the glacier and crash into the sea. Following an extended drift near the glacier’s face, the catamaran will maneuver back into open water to pull alongside your awaiting cruise ship. Note: We recommend participants bring a warm jacket, hat and gloves to wear on the observation deck. In the event that unpredictable and ever-changing ice conditions preclude the vessel from entering the upper reaches of Tracy Arm fjord, the tour will be modified to explore Endicott Arm, an adjacent fjord and tidewater glacier of equal beauty. Due to diminishing daylight and ice condition this tour is not available in early May and mid to late September. This tour is available for guests on Norwegian Jewel only. less

This is the experience many anglers dream of when planning an Alaskan vacation, fishing for the largest flatfish in the world, the Pacific Halibut. Imagine catching your first wild halibut with your friends or family and the bragging rights that will come with sharing this delectable fish back home. Unlike many other Alaska destinations, Ketchikan fishing is in protected waters, a short ride from the marina. No matter your skill level, you'll fish like a local, with a Penn rod and Penn 114 reel in your own two hands, working the sandy flats, drifting with the current, jigging in waters as deep as 300 feet. Spend the day with an experienced Alaskan guide, in pursuit of the elusive halibut, learning the secrets of fishing circle hooks, working the tides and battling your leviathan. You can choose to custom process your halibut, as well as purchase a selection of local Alaskan seafood to include with the shipment of your bounty home. Note: Participants must be at least 5 years of age, weigh a minimum of 30 lbs and a maximum of 300 lbs. Deck or rubber soled shoes must be worn on board. On your journey, your local guides knowledgeable in the history and making of Astoria beers, will lead the way to your first destination. As the bus makes its way through town, sit back, relax and take in the stunning views of the Columbia River right outside your window. Fort George Brewery + Public House was established in 2007 and specializes in innovative and exciting flavors such as coffee stout or even wasabi-flavored ginger ale. During your visit, you might want to try "The Quick Wit" Belgian style ale that's made with organic pale and wheat malts, ground coriander and lemongrass. Or you could sip any one of the seasonal fruit ales. Then, you’re off to Rogue Ales. Occupying a former Bumble Bee tuna cannery, Rogue sits on Astoria Riverwalk, a five-mile river trail that's lined with hotels, restaurants, parks and a nearly 100-year-old restored trolley train. Made with the finest hops and barley malt, Rogue Ales are bottled using an oxygen absorbing cap, and brown glass for better shelf life. Some of the barrel aged beers and ales you might want to try include "Chipotle Ale," which is deep golden ale that's made with roasted chipotle peppers and produces an eye opening chili flavor with a malty, smoky aroma and smooth, crisp flavor. Your last stop is The Wet Dog, where a variety of beers are handcrafted using a wide range of hops and grains to create unique flavors. The pub's riverfront deck is open during the summer and offers a fantastic view of the Columbia River. Some of the beers you might try include "Strawberry Blonde," which attributes its light pink to golden opaque hue to the barley, wheat and 90 pounds of strawberries. Experience the leisure of a bygone era with a visit to the stately Flavel House. Now a museum, the house was built in 1885 for Captain George Flavel, Astoria's first millionaire and one of it's most prominent citizens. Today, this queen Anne-style home is a living tribute to the elegance of the Victorian period and the history of the Flavel family. Your guided tour begins at the pier and travels along Astoria's tree-lined streets. As you approach the Flavel House, you'll be immediately struck by the park-like grounds that cover an entire city block; many of the trees that surround the home were planted by the Flavels over a century ago. This beautiful setting was also the site of many Hollywood movies including the 1980's hit The Goonies and Short Circuit. One of the best-preserved examples of Queen Anne architecture in the Northwest, Flavel House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On the outside, this stunning mansion boasts a decorative exterior, three-story octagon tower, impressive balconies and verandas. Inside, the approximate 11,600 square foot mansion features elegant woodwork, stained glass windows, and in-laid hardwood floors. As you walk into the grand entry, it's like stepping back into the 19th century. The first floor features 14-foot high ceilings, a formal parlor, music room, library, dining room, conservatory, kitchen and a butler's pantry. Climb up the winding wooden staircase to the second floor and you'll see the main bathroom (with an enclosed tin-plated copper bathtub), five bedrooms and a sewing room. The attic floor features two bedrooms that were used by the family's servants. The three-story tower provided the Captain a panoramic view of Astoria and the Columbia River. After your tour, you're invited to sit and relax in the parlor over a cup of tea and taste scones. Travel across Young’s Bay Bridge for the short journey to Fort Stevens State Park. Once you arrive a friendly and knowledgeable guide will take you on a tour of this nearly 146-year-old fort and share its fascinating history. Built by the U.S. Army in the waning days of the Civil War it may seem odd that Oregon could have been the site of a battle or two. But the U.S. government was fearful that the British would join the Confederates, so the fort was established to protect the North from a possible English invasion. And to protect it from a land attack, the fort was surrounded by a moat with a drawbridge. Today, the gun batteries, fortifications and other buildings are preserved along with 3,700 acres of woodlands, lakes, wetlands and beaches. Your guide will continue to lead you through the complex and its bunkers, abandoned gun batteries, and tower stations before heading up to the commander's station for a scenic view of the Columbia River. Then, you'll venture underground to the Battery Mishler. Here, during WWII, 10 inch rifles were mounted on disappearing carriages, which hid the guns behind concrete and earthen walls when not being fired. These powerful guns could fire 617-pound shells at a distance of nine miles. The museum will be your last stop before heading back to the pier. Enjoy browsing through the interesting artifacts that date back to the Civil War and stop in at the gift shop, which offers a variety of souvenirs commemorating your visit. less

Lightships served as floating lighthouses, providing a beacon for ships at sea when a beam from a traditional coastal lighthouse couldn't reach. After your tour, you'll return to your ship via a scenic drive through Astoria. Nestled between the Columbia River and Young’s Bay, Astoria is the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. Established as a fur trading post in 1811, today Astoria boasts a rich heritage of charm and natural beauty. Some of the sights you'll see included picturesque Victorian and Queen Anne style homes and churches; Uniontown, home of the men who worked at the Union Fish Cannery; and the "Doughboy" monument, dedicated to the soldiers from Astoria who gave their lives during World War I. Note: The Lightship Columbia portion of the tour is not recommended for individuals with mobility challenges due to steep access ladders and elevated thresholds. less

On a high-speed catamaran, travel just 17 miles to Point Adolphus, one of Alaska's premier humpback feeding grounds and whale watching destinations. These nutrient-rich waters support a wide array of other marine life including orca, Steller's sea lion, and Dall's Porpoise to name a few. Head back to Icy Strait Point, board a bus and hear about the Tlingit village of Hoonah by your local guide while en route to the Spasski River. After a beautiful drive through the interior forests and muskegs of Chicagof Island where you can watch for wildlife such as Sitka black-tailed deer, woodpeckers, bald eagles and coastal brown bear, you arrive at your destination. Enjoy a short walk on a boardwalk over the muskeg and arrive at three viewing platforms overlooking the river. Have your camera ready in case the bears happen to be out feeding. Note: We recommend you wear warm layered clothing and a waterproof jacket. Participants must be at least 8 years of age. less
