Discover the European charm and character of the first French City in North America as you explore the city sites and learn the fascinating history of Quebec’s legacy. Perched on a hill overlooking the St. Lawrence River is Chateau Frontenac, the best-known landmark in Quebec. Located just outside the chateau is the romantic boardwalk known as Dufferin Terrace from where you’ll have a spectacular view of the St. Lawrence River, Ile d’Orleans and the Laurentian Mountains. Passing through the St. Louis Gate, next explore the National Battlefields Park, with a short photo stop at Cap Diamant. Continue on past the trendy Grand Allee, the Champs-Elysees of Quebec lined with quaint shops, sidewalk cafes and boutiques. Next, pass the Hotel du Parliament, an imposing Second Empire-style building. Within minutes of the walled city of Old Quebec are the beautiful pastoral landscapes of Quebec’s countryside. A photo stop will be made at the Montmorency Falls where you'll enjoy the breathtaking views and see the powerful forces of natures as the water of the Montmorency River roars down the cliff to eventually meet with the St. Lawrence River. less

Beginning at the scenic Corner Brook stream, wind your way through the dramatic country trail. Your naturalist/guide will point out interesting flora and any wildlife that you may encounter along the way. After your walk, enjoy a complimentary coffee or tea and a tasty Newfoundland berry treat at a local restaurant or the museum. The trails are quite hilly and have many steps and inclines. They can best be described as ranging from gentle to rugged. You should be in very good physical condition and wear comfortable walking shoes.

At the tip of a majestic fjord where the waters of the Saquenay and Saint Lawrence Rivers meet lies the charming village of Saguenay. With a decidedly French atmosphere and a touch of the Old World, you’ll visit the district of Chicoutimi and learn about the area's cultural, historic and natural history. As you begin your sightseeing tour, you’ll discover the importance of the fjord, deeply chiseled in the Laurentian Mountains, as a natural trading route for the first Nations people of the area. In the 1600’s, France established its first fur trading post and colonization of the area soon followed. Passing the industrial area, you’ll see how the early 20th century brought exploitation of the river with logging, the pulp and paper industries, and aluminum production. Continuing to Chicoutimi, you’ll drive along its main street – rue Racine – and its Old Port. A photo stop will be made at the Cultural Quarter and the Little White House that miraculously survived the Flood of 1996. A photo stop will also be made at the Pulp Mill of Chicoutimi. Founded in 1898, the mill played an important role in the development of the area. Also noted as the first French Canadian owned Pulp Company the mill produced a high quality pulp that was exported throughout the world. You’ll then drive by the Ha! Ha! Pyramid in La Baie district where you’ll learn of the great flood of 1996 that devastated the region and proved to be one of Canada’s greatest natural disasters. less

Explore Gaspe, its surroundings and magnificent Forillon National Park. In the Micmac language, Gaspe means Land’s End. Gaspe is associated with the beginning of western history in North America; the cross that Jacques Cartier erected here in 1534 has made it the birthplace of Canada. The town is unique, covering 606 square miles (975 square km), with 93 miles (150 km) of coastline exposed to the sea! Wherever one is in Gaspe, water – either fresh or salty – is never far away. The deep, coastal indentation is the Bay of Gaspe – a magnificent body of water sheltered by the surrounding mountains. Edged by stretches of sandy or pebble beaches, the bay becomes the gathering place for swimmers, boaters and water-sports enthusiasts. A visit to Forillon National Park is sure to be a unique adventure. The tip of Forillon, which was declared a Canadian national park in order to preserve the wild beauty of its coast, reveals various geological formations and phenomena up to 450 million years old. Its majestic landscapes cover a 152 square mile (244 square km) area that is carved out of the sea, cliffs and mountains. Here, where the land joins the sea, are born pebble beaches, dizzying cliffs, small coves, rocky capes and fine sand beaches. The presence of ten different rock formations, colonies of seabirds and enigmatic Arctic-alpine plants give this park its unique character. The park also bears witness to an important cultural and historical heritage. The mark humans have left on the Forillon landscape speaks of how closely their lifestyle was attuned to the natural environment. In fact, 'Harmony between man, the land and the sea' was chosen as the theme that would guide promotional activities in the park precisely because of the significant natural and cultural characteristics inherent to Forillon. To the west of the village, you can explore Fort Peninsule, an old lookout and vestige of the Second World War. A little-known episode of the Second World War took place right in the Bay of Gaspe. Located in the northern area of Forillon National Park, Cap-des-Rosiers Lighthouse, erected in 1858, is one of the tallest beacons built by the Canadian Coast Guard in Quebec. Canada's tallest lighthouse, it soars 112 feet (34.1 meters) into the air. The Cap-Bon-Ami Sea Cliffs constitute the rock walls corresponding to the peak front and are located at the northern side of the Forillon Peninsula. Those escarpments are huge especially near the sea, from the end of the Cap-des-Rosiers plains to Forillon extremity. All of the littoral wall vary in heights and can go to 197 feet (180 meters) at the south-east of Cap-bon-Ami. Seabirds give the park a definite maritime feel. Each year, the spring migrations bring double-crested cormorant, black guillemot, black-legged kittiwake, gulls and razorbill, all attracted by suitable breeding sites and an abundance of food in the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Gaspe Bay. The sea cliffs of the Cap-bon-Ami area accommodate the park's largest gathering of birds during the breeding period, including thousands of black-legged kittiwakes. Designated a historic monument and a national historic site of Canada, the Manoir Le Boutillier was constructed around 1850 by John Le Boutillier, a leading cod merchant originally from Jersey (one of the Channel Islands). The lively tour introduces visitors to a facet of the regional heritage of the Gaspe Peninsula; the restored manor is as it was when John Le Boutillier occupied the house (1850-1860). Wrap up your tour with lunch at Centre Culturel Le Griffon, a unique cultural center with a maritime atmosphere. Located in a former authentic cold store built in 1942, The Centre Culturel Le Griffon houses a number of services for visitors including the Cafe de L'Anse, a historic exhibit on the time when cooperatives came into being, and an artists' studio. Come and let the rhythm of the tide mesmerize you in a sea kayaking excursion. From the pier in La Baie, you’ll enjoy a 45-minute scenic drive to Parc National du Saguenay Interpretation Centre where you’ll be given a safety briefing before boarding your kayak for a 1 1/4-hour journey. As you paddle along Cape Trinity, the most impressive in the fjord with sheer cliffs and sand beaches, you’re sure to fall under the spell of this breathtaking unaltered environment. While on the surface, the beauty of the Saguenay Fjord is striking, these waters also intrigue us as they reveal glimpses of their depths that have long been thought unfathomable. If you’re lucky you may encounter some of the marine life including lazy seals sun tanning on an emerging rocks or a beluga whale frolicking in the water. Previous kayak experience is not necessary. Following your kayak tour you’ll have some free time at the Interpretation Center to enjoy the excellent exhibits of the fjord or shop in the trendy gift shop. Note: There is approximately 300 yards (274 meters) of walking from the parking lot to the dock where the excursion begins. less

Talley-Ho! The Halifax Horse-Drawn Trolley will take you back into another era. This one hour tour is a very relaxing horse-drawn trolley ride through the Halifax of the 1900s where you’ll see the old Warehouse District, the harbor front, the Halifax Citadel Hill Fortress and Founders Cemetery, the final resting place of 1812 British War Heroes. On this easy and informative walking tour you’ll learn about Gaspesie's unforgotten past and fishing families' way of life. The trail called Une Tournee dans les Parages (a walk around the area) starts near the fishing harbor, at the Grande-Grave heritage site, where the Hyman & Sons store, the warehouse and the Blanchette house reveal an unforgotten past and attests to the way of life of fishing families, and takes you back through fields and woods to a number of old houses and barns. Outdoor exhibits along the way recount the history of Grande-Grave. The bracing sea air and Forillon’s magnificent panoramas are sure to make your walk all the more pleasant. Note: Walking is on uneven ground, on a 1.5 mile (2.4 Km) fairly flat walking trail. We recommend that you wear sturdy shoes or hiking boots (no sandals) and appropriate outdoor clothing. Discover Maine’s rich maritime history with a visit to the Maine Maritime Museum and Bath Iron Works. You'll also have some free time to explore the quaint village of Bath. During your approximate one hour drive to Bath, your guide will offer you insight and commentary about the area and passing scenery. At the museum you’ll meet your maritime guide and board a coach to the Bath Iron Works, a major American shipyard on the Kennebec River. Since its founding in 1884, they have built private, commercial and military vessels, most of which have been ordered by the United States Navy. A one hour scenic drive through the ironworks facilities brings the history and importance of the site to life.

Return to the Maine Maritime Museum located on a beautiful 20 acre campus to discover Maine’s 400 year old shipbuilding history, accompanied by your friendly and knowledgeable guide. Explore the Percy & Small Shipyard, the last shipyard of its kind in the country. Experience Victorian life in Donnell House, as museum volunteers demonstrate traditional boatbuilding skills and learn the history of lobster fishing in Maine at the Lobstering and Maine Coast exhibit. Following your guided portion of the museum visit, you’ll have some free time to explore further or shop at the museum store. A short ride will bring you to the center of Bath where you’ll have approximately 1 1/2 hours of time to discover this charming village or have a meal on your own. At the appointed time board your coach for the return to Portland and your ship.

Note: Walking in the city of Bath is at the guest’s discretion, most buildings are wheelchair accessible. A security check must be completed before the coach is permitted to enter Bath Iron Works; you’ll need to print and sign your name as well as supply your nationality on a sign-in sheet (no identification is required). This will be completed en route from Portland to Bath. There is absolutely no photography permitted inside the Bath Iron Works, still or motion. This tour may be cancelled at any time due to changes in national security concerns. The exploration of Bath Iron Works is panoramic from the motorcoach. The Maritime Museum is outdoors and consists of several buildings connected by gravel paths. The Main building is wheelchair accessible; some historic buildings on the grounds are not less

After a short shuttle ride, follow a backcountry trail through Boreal forest before reaching the entrance to the Corner Brook caves. These caves were formed by the Corner Brook stream which still runs through part of the cave system. Climb down an approximately seven foot (two-meter) rock face (with assistance) to enter the caves and proceed through the underground tunnels. Next you’ll enter the part of the cave system that contains the stream where you’ll manage to stay dry by climbing the path alongside the stream. The next section of the cave will require wading. This water may reach your knees depending on your height and you’ll get soaked!

At one point the stream will get too deep to stand and you'll have the choice to swim or walk around and meet up with the swimmers on the other side. The height of the caves range from big caverns several meters high to narrow passages high enough to allow people to just comfortably slide through on their belly or back and be able to remain and move in a ducked stance. A certain level of mobility is required to move through the narrower passages and a fear of dark enclosed spaces needs to be considered.

Note: Polyester/nylon t shirts and pants are suggested as cotton and jeans get heavy when wet. Study shoes are also recommended and keep in mind that they will get wet. Helmets and headlamps are provided. Participants must be at least 8 years of age, not pregnant, weigh no more than 220 lbs. (approximately 100 kg) and not be taller than 7 feet (2 meters) in height. Must be in good physical condition, able to bend, move around and lift their weight with assistance. All participants will be required by the operator to sign an English language waiver prior to the start of the adventure. less

Take a scenic drive through the vibrant city of Boston en route to magnificent Copley Square. Along the way you'll pass the spectacular Boston Common, the oldest park in the country and the start of the Freedom Trail. See the New State House with its magnificent gold dome, the Public Garden, famous for its century-old swan boats, and the Old South Meeting House where the most memorable gathering sparked the Boston Tea Party in 1773 and ignited the Revolutionary War. Drive along Newbury Street with its upscale boutiques, unique galleries and trendy cafes. Your first stop will be Copley Square which showcases stunning examples of medieval, classical, and modern design. The most prominent building is the Romanesque Trinity Church. Located on the south side is the magnificent Boston Public Library. Founded in 1848, it was the first free municipal library in the United States. Noted for its Italian Renaissance-style exterior, it is an important example of early 19th-century American architecture. Overlooking the square is the ultra-modern John Hancock Tower. Designed by world-renowned Chinese architect I.M. Pei, the building is the tallest in New England at 60 stories high and its modernist design transforms the skyline. Enjoy a picturesque drive through the town of Lynn and then the town of Salem where you'll begin with lunch in an elegant restaurant followed by a walk down Chestnut Street. Grand, old homes line this magnificent street, many of them built by sea Captains and merchants in the early 1800's during Salem's 'Great Age of Sail.' Enjoy a visit to the Salem Witch Museum which takes you back to the Salem of 1692. Using stage sets, life-size figures, lighting and narration you’ll learn about the Witch Trials of 1692. There will also be time to explore the "Witches: Evolving Perceptions" exhibit which examines the stereotypical witch, aspects of witchcraft in the 17th century, modern witchcraft and the phenomenon of witch hunts. Prior to departing, stop in the museum's gift shop for unusual mementos and souvenirs. Enjoy a picturesque drive on your return to port. Note: This tour will require walking and standing for approximately 40 minutes at the Witch Museum. Walking in Salem is at your discretion. There is a gift shop available in the Witch Museum and a variety of shops along Salem’s waterfront. Witch Museum is wheelchair accessible however some of the shops in town are not. less

Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) established the family fortune in steamships and later in the New York Central Railroad. As the industrial revolution reached its zenith in the late 19th century, the Vanderbilts soon became the wealthiest family in America and chose Newport as their summer playground. Learn about the family empire and visit two of the grandest villas ever built in the United States. Completed in 1892, Marble House was modeled after the Petit Trianon at Versailles and took nearly four years to build with a total cost exceeding $11 million dollars.

Enjoy the stories of the elaborate parties of the gilded age and Alva Vanderbilt as you tour the public rooms and grounds of Marble House. Next, visit the grandest of Newport's summer ‘cottages’, the Breakers was inspired by the 16th century palaces of Genoa and Turin. Completed in 1895, the mansion is situated on a 13 acre estate overlooking a spectacular view of the rugged Atlantic coastline.

Note: Due to the popularity of the Newport mansions, please anticipate a wait of approximately 30 minutes. Tour involves 45 to 60 minutes of slow walking or standing at each mansion. You are guided through the mansions via personal audio headsets available in several languages. Wheelchair access to the Breakers is only possible through the service entrance. Continuing past Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs and the Jordon Pond House, you’ll make your way (weather permitting) to the 1,530-foot (466 meters) summit of Cadillac Mountain, the highest point on North America’s Eastern seaboard. With a 360-degree panoramic view, you’ll see how glaciers carved through the granite cliffs to form a beautiful landscape of lush forest, lakes and valleys. You’ll then be treated to a true 'Downeast' lobster bake in a beautiful setting along the coast. Pulled fresh from ocean water, enjoy typical Maine lobster drizzled with butter as well as all the trimmings.

Note: Steak is available for non-lobster eaters. Walking is at your discretion. Most surfaces are paved but there are some uneven, slippery-when-wet areas and some steps. The stop at Cadillac Mountain will not be made in adverse or foggy weather conditions. A visit to the Acadia National Park Visitors Center or alternative location will be made instead. Discover the oldest baseball park in the Major League on this half-day outing that includes a narrated scenic drive thorough Boston. 'Stadium' is almost too grand a term for Fenway. Built in 1912, it's smaller than modern parks and full of quirks that only add to its mystique. Seats are narrow, wood-slatted chairs dating back to 1934, many have poor sightlines and no legroom. Incredibly, the scoreboard is still hand-operated, pitchers warm up in bullpens right on the edge of the diamond, in plain view of the spectators. See all that makes this park unique including the lone red seat, the triangle and Williamsburg. Following a 45-minute (upper deck trolley-Princess) drive through scenic Boston, arrive at Fenway where you are greeted by an official Fenway Park guide and escorted through the fabled pitch. Located just 45 minutes from Portland, enjoy a scenic drive through Kennebunkport passing the stunning Federal and Victorian-style mansions built by wealthy sea captains and merchants in the 1700s and 1800s. Enjoy a scenic harbor cruise to Rose Island where you will have an opportunity to visit the fully restored lighthouse, see the remains of the 200-year old Ft. First lit in 1870, the lighthouse was lovingly restored to its original turn-of-the-century ambiance in 1993 and remains an inspiring example of classic American maritime architecture. A visit to this 'living museum' offers insight into a bygone way of life in which lives were spent tending the light and raising families in dedicated self-sufficiency. You will have an opportunity to explore the station from the windmill to the cellar cistern and learn about the working lives and amusements of lighthouse families through their own possessions and photographs. Following your visit to the lighthouse, you will join your naturalist guide for a leisurely walk of the island. Due to its strategic location, Rose Island has an interesting history dating back to the Revolutionary War. Today, the island plays an important role as a wildlife refuge and home to a number of migrating birds including Little Blue Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Great and Snowy Egret and Glossy Ibis. En route to Rose Island, you will enjoy a scenic harbor cruise of Narragansett Bay. With fresh sea breezes and beautiful coastal scenery, your Captain will be happy to share with you the 350-year history of the city-by-the-sea and how it earned the title 'yachting capital of the world'. Founded in 1753, Lunenburg has since been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of Nova Scotia’s most historic towns and a splendid example of a British Colonial settlement. While the drive is approximately 75 minutes, the wait is worth it, once you arrive in this charming scenic waterfront town. Enjoying the historic and colorful working waterfront, you can expect your tour guide to regale you with intriguing tales of shipbuilding, fishing, rum running, and even the buried treasure of Oak Island, all part of the local lore. You’ll also enjoy the Lunenburgers’ unique accent - no doubt the result of their Swiss and German forebears (German was spoken here well into the 1800s). You’ll have some time to explore on your own, perhaps to visit the Fisheries Museum of Lunenburg (small fee), where the 'Bluenose II', a replica of Nova Scotia’s famous racing schooner of the 1920s was built in 1963. Along the way your Captain provides commentary on the geological points of interest as well as wildlife such as the porpoise, seal, osprey and bald eagle that are often sighted in this area.

The Parc National de l'Ile-Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Perce is an enchanting site. Sculpted by time and the sea at the tip of the Gaspe Peninsula, it makes an extravagant show of its rich historical heritage and amazing geological history. Its remarkable flora and fauna, including its world-renowned northern gannet colony, contribute to the park's reputation as a must-see destination. Its weight is estimated at five million tons. The arch itself is 49 feet (15 meters) high. The rock is a nesting place for cormorants, kittiwakes and seagulls. Continue your journey to Borden, to see the world’s longest bridge that covers frozen water, and the chance to shop for lovingly handcrafted souvenirs. Next, skirt the North Shore to the quaint fishing village of North Rustico, where breathtaking coastal vistas await you. Take in the fresh salt air while the famous red sand caresses your toes and you snap a few keepsake photos on the beach. This leg stretch is followed by a casual lunch of local seafood. After lunch, drive to picturesque Cavendish to visit Green Gables, the farmstead which inspired the setting for L.M. Montgomery to create her beloved tale of a red-haired orphan, Anne of Green Gables. Continue to the First Nations community of Membertou where you’ll celebrate the heritage, culture and unique history of these people through educational and interactive experiences. Your tour guide and/or Elders of Membertou will encourage you to experience their story, learn Mi’kmaq dance and drum as they provide a hands on demonstration and instruction. Sample traditional Mi’kmaq food and/or treat as you learn the history of their food, perhaps comparing the old way with the new. Enjoy a walk in their garden area and visit Petroglyphs Gift Shop featuring arts and crafts from the Mi’kmaq Nation and other First Nations across Atlantic Canada. If you’re interested in religious history, or just in the mood for a scenic leisurely drive along the St. Lawrence River, you won’t want to miss this trip to the world-renowned shrine of Ste. Anne de Beaupre. With over one-and-a-half million visitors and pilgrims making their way to the shrine each year, Ste. Anne has become one of the most important Catholic sites in North America. After a narration by your guide en route, you’ll be able to independently enjoy the lovely grounds and major sites of Ste. Anne de Beaupre. Built in medieval style, the most prominent structure is the Basilica. The impressive cross-shaped building is covered with granite and lit by over 200 stained glass windows. The Scala Santa, built in 1891, contains a replica of the Holy Stairs which Christ climbed before being sentenced to death by Pontius Pilate. The Memorial Chapel was built to commemorate the third church constructed on the site. Departing Ste. Anne, a stop will be made at the spectacular Montmorency Falls. Cascading down a 272-foot (83 meter) cliff, Montmorency is one-and-a-half times as high as Niagara Falls. At the Albert Gilles Copper Art Museum, be seduced by the art form of repousse, masterfully interpreted by the craftsman Albert Gilles whose talent served prestigious people like Pope Pius XII and Walt Disney. Also admire the 'Life of Christ' in 50 hand-wrought silver panels (15 years of labor). His work can be found in Ste-Anne-de-Beaupre Basilica as well as in many churches throughout the north. Note: Walking at the different stops is mostly on level ground, with some cobblestone streets. Access to Montmorency Falls is possible for guests with walking limitations or in wheelchair. First illuminated on January 10, 1791, Portland Head Light has since stood at the gateway to Portland Harbor for mariners traveling Maine’s perilous coast. A short photo stop will be made before returning to Portland to embark an authentic Maine-built, wooden schooner for a leisurely sail on Casco Bay. The schooners - 'Bagheera' and 'Wendameen' - are the ideal way to experience the beauty of Maine’s rugged coastline featuring lighthouses, seals and seabirds. Join the crew as they hoist the sails, take command at the ship’s wheel, or simply relax and enjoy the scenery as you ply the calm waters of Casco Bay. Under full sail you’ll glide past Portland’s bustling waterfront, secluded islands, historic forts and lighthouses perched along Casco Bay. Your guide will point out the sites along the way.
