One man-made aspect of Acadia National Park that never fails to impress and fascinate visitors is the 57 miles of rustic carriage roads, which weave through the park. After a short drive along a portion of the Park Loop Road, travel back in time to the turn of the century as you board your 15-passenger horse-drawn carriage for an approximately one-hour scenic ride along the famous Carriage Trails around Day Mountain. Built by philanthropist John D. Rockefeller, Jr. between 1913 and 1940, the beautifully designed gravel byways afford a unique and close-up view of the Acadia National Park landscape. Made of hand-cut stone and rock, the extensive motor-free trails are enjoyed today by hikers, bicyclists, horse riders and carriages. Weather permitting, continue along the Park Loop Road, making your way to the 1,530-foot (466 meters) Cadillac Mountain, highest point on North America’s Eastern seaboard. With a 360-degree panoramic view, you will see how glaciers carved through the granite cliffs to form a beautiful landscape of lush forest, lakes and valleys. On foggy days the tour does not visit Cadillac Mountain. Note: This tour is not available for all sailings. Walking is at your discretion. Most surfaces are paved but there are some uneven, slippery-when-wet areas and some steps. The stop at Cadillac Mountain will not be made in adverse or foggy weather conditions; a visit to the Acadia National Park Visitors Center or alternative location will be made. less

Enjoy all that Maine has to offer as you board a private boat for a cruise through Casco Bay to a private island where you’ll enjoy a delicious 'downeast' lobster bake and a tour of a Civil War Fort. Departing from the waterfront, you’ll have magnificent views of Portland and the surrounding islands as you cruise through Casco Bay to House Island. With records dating back to 1661, House Island was one of the first islands in the Bay area to be occupied. Originally built to defend Portland against the British, the fort was later used to defend the north against the south during the Civil War. During your walking tour of the fort, explore the 70 gun casements, subterranean vaults, archways, tunnels and circular stairways of this unique fort. After you have worked up an appetite touring the fort, you’ll be treated to a feast comprised of an approximately 1 1/4-pound lobster, clam chowder, corn on the cob, cole slaw, potato chips and blueberry cake and a non-alcoholic beverage. For the non-lobster lover, it can be substituted with chicken. Note: The topography of the island is not suitable for guests on wheelchairs. Participants must be able to walk approximately 1/2 mile over uneven and cobblestone surfaces with approximately 15 to 20 steps. Boat does not have a ramp. less

The Fortress of Louisbourg was one of the busiest harbors in North America and one of France's key centers of trade and military strength in the New World. Today, the site is an exciting and entertaining lesson in history. Plan to see selected buildings and exhibits. Experience the life of a military officer as you visit the home of Captain and Madame DeGannes. Discuss household duties with the servant in the Engineer’s Residence. Discover some tricks of open-hearth cooking and then wander up to the spectacular chapel in the King’s Bastion. Talk to a soldier. You'll find them happy to tell you about guard duty, living conditions, security, food and a soldier's life in general. Note: Considerable walking is involved. Wear sturdy walking shoes and dress warmly, bring a jacket or windbreaker. This tour is not recommended for persons with special mobility needs or wheelchairs. less

Less than an hour away from Saint John is the picturesque fishing village of St. Martins, a beautiful window through which to take a peek at life in New Brunswick. During the scenic drive to St. Martins, your local guide will entertain you with fascinating folklore about the village, including the thriving shipbuilding era of bygone days. Upon arrival, stop at the harbor and witness the effects of the extreme high and low tides of the Bay of Fundy. This area is a favorite with artists, with its lighthouse, lobster traps and fishing boats creating a charming scene. Stroll over the covered bridge and explore this working harbor. Visit the beach, where time and tides have carved echoing caves in the sandstone cliffs. Enjoy a walk along the beach and a light lunch of delicious seafood chowder at the beach restaurant. As you return to the pier, enjoy the scenery and reflect on your wonderful day in St. Martins.
Note: This tour is also available with a French-speaking guide. French-speaking guests should book SJB_40. There will be alternate soup for those who don't eat seafood. Participants must be able to walk approximately 300 yards over even surfaces with 5 to 10 steps. Walking on the beach and at the Sea Caves is over very rocky terrain and is at your discretion. The Sea Caves are only accessible at low tide, but they can be viewed from the beach during high tide. The tide may be high or low depending on the time of visit. less

Experience a narrated excursion of Halifax, including a drive by historic properties, a restored section of the waterfront, Citadel Hill and the beautiful public gardens before heading out to Peggy’s Cove. On this tour you’ll travel along the scenic coastal highway to the tiny village of Peggy’s Cove, where less than 40 residents live year round. See the brightly colored houses nestled close to the water’s edge in this working rustic fishing village.
As you enter the cove, drive by the monument carved by local artist William deGarthe from a massive slab of granite and a tribute to the people of Peggy’s Cove. Your guide will also spin tales of the Cove, explain how it got its name, tell you the story of its lighthouse and talk about the lobster fishery, which is the backbone of the local economy. There is also an optional live lobster demonstration by your guide, if you wish. Explore the village on your own and if you choose, there is plenty of time to visit a few of the shops and galleries before you return to your ship.

At the tip of a majestic fjord where the waters of the Saquenay and Saint Lawrence Rivers meet lies the charming village of Saguenay. With a decidedly French atmosphere and a touch of the Old World, you’ll visit the district of Chicoutimi and learn about the area's cultural, historic and natural history. As you begin your sightseeing tour, you’ll discover the importance of the fjord, deeply chiseled in the Laurentian Mountains, as a natural trading route for the first Nations people of the area. In the 1600’s, France established its first fur trading post and colonization of the area soon followed. Passing the industrial area, you’ll see how the early 20th century brought exploitation of the river with logging, the pulp and paper industries, and aluminum production. Continuing to Chicoutimi, you’ll drive along its main street – rue Racine – and its Old Port. A photo stop will be made at the Cultural Quarter and the Little White House that miraculously survived the Flood of 1996. A photo stop will also be made at the Pulp Mill of Chicoutimi. Founded in 1898, the mill played an important role in the development of the area. Also noted as the first French Canadian owned Pulp Company the mill produced a high quality pulp that was exported throughout the world. You’ll then drive by the Ha! Ha! Pyramid in La Baie district where you’ll learn of the great flood of 1996 that devastated the region and proved to be one of Canada’s greatest natural disasters. less

Passing the gold dome of the Massachusetts State House, you'll see the Old South Meeting House where the Boston Tea Party began. Looking across the Charles River as the patriots did in April of 1775, catch a glimpse of the steeple of Old North Church where Paul Revere ordered two lanterns hung in the steeple to signal that the British Recoats were on the move. The spectacular rocky coastline nearby Portland, Maine is studded with lighthouses dating back over 200 years. On this half-day tour you’ll see three prominent lighthouses and visit the Museum of Portland Head Light. Departing the pier, drive through historic Portland passing by the Eastern Promenade offering a panoramic view of Casco Bay, the Portland Observatory, the new arts district, as well as the thriving commercial and business districts. Visit Bug Light, a steel structure lined with brick, that was first lighted in 1875 as an aid to navigation for this busy port. In addition, enjoy the Liberty Ship Memorial dedicated to the 266 ships built on the site during WWII. Commonly known as American ugly ducklings, these vessels were the workhorses of the WWII fleet, carrying cargoes of grain and mail, ore and ammo, trucks and troops in the fabled horizon-filling convoys. Then it’s a short jaunt to the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse, a typical sparkplug-style lighthouse constructed of brick on a cylindrical cast-iron caisson. Many vessels ran aground on this dangerous ledge before requests from seven steamship companies in 1891 convinced the government to build a lighthouse. Then travel along Cape Elizabeth’s rocky coast to Fort Williams, once a military outpost for coastal defense and now home of Maine’s oldest lighthouse. First illuminated on January 10, 1791, Portland Head Light has since stood at the gateway to Portland Harbor for mariners traveling Maine’s perilous coast. Here you’ll have ample time to explore the grounds and visit the impressive museum located in the former lighthouse keeper’s quarters. The museum chronicles the history of the Portland Head Light and Fort Williams through permanent exhibits displaying original artifacts and documents, navigational aids, lenses, video displays, models and photography. Note: At Portland Head Light, guests must walk from the bus parking lot to the lighthouse for approximately 200 yards on level and uneven ground with a few steps. Explore the mountains, fjords and coastal wonders of Gros Morne National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site. This tour features beautiful scenery on the north side of the park and includes a total of four hours of travel by coach. The local lunch features distinctive Newfoundland flavors. You’ll stop at Gros Morne Park’s visitor center to learn about the geological significance of this park, hailed as the “Galapagos of Geology”. The Lobster Cove Lighthouse stop will introduce you to the first people of North America and the history of the local communities including some famous local shipwrecks.
Newfoundland's geological history comes alive at Western Brook Pond, looking at the distant, raised, inland fjord that was carved by the sea and slipped away from the ocean's edge a mere 15,000 years ago.
