Cruise to Perce Rock and around Bonaventure Island sectors to see its gannet colony – the largest in the world – then explore Perce on your own. The Parc National de l'Ile-Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Perce is an enchanting site. Sculpted by time and the sea at the tip of the Gaspe Peninsula, it makes an extravagant show of its rich historical heritage and amazing geological history. Its remarkable flora and fauna, including its world-renowned northern gannet colony, contribute to the park's reputation as a must-see destination. This rocky bastion is a prolongation of the Appalachian Mountains extending into the waters of the Gulf of the St. Lawrence and has for its fortress Bonaventure Island and Perce Rock, Quebec’s tourist-emblem, as its majestic vessel of stone. Bonaventure Island is home to a spectacular congregation of 300,000 sea birds, including razorbills, gulls, murres, and puffins. The island also has 223 species of avian wildlife. Perce Rock, one of the world’s largest and most spectacular natural arches, is proud testament to Gaspesie’s geological heritage. An unshakeable mass of rock and limestone 375 million years old, it measures 474 yards (433 meters) in length, 98 yards (90 meters) wide, and 96 yards (88 meters) at its highest point. Its weight is estimated at five million tons. The arch itself is 49 feet (15 meters) high. The rock is a nesting place for cormorants, kittiwakes and seagulls. One of the most popular activities in Perce is the boat tour around the Parc National de l’Ile-Bonaventure-et-du-Rocher-Perce, which takes visitors to both sides of the famous Perce Rock and then out to see the thousands of birds nesting on the cliffs of Bonaventure Island. A boat excursion to the rock and around the island is an unforgettable experience. The highpoint of the visit is without doubt the sight of 250,000 birds nesting on the island. Picturesque, historic and entertaining, the lively city of Portland incorporates the character and charm of its past with a developing urban community. Your tour begins with a scenic drive through the quaint streets of the Old Port where street lanterns highlight a gracious mix of architectural styles. Once the home of the warehouse district, the red brick buildings have been transformed into charming restaurants, pubs, unique boutiques and galleries. Continuing to Munjoy Hill, enjoy terrific views of Casco Bay and the islands from Fort Allen Park before continuing past one of the city’s most celebrated landmarks, the Portland Observatory. Passing through the business and commercial center you’ll see Portland’s new Arts District, as well as the beautiful facade of City Hall before entering the Western Promenade, one of America’s best-preserved Victorian residential neighborhoods. Entered into the National Register of Historical Places in 1982, the Western Promenade is built on a cliff’s edge, rising 175 feet above sea level and remains one of the wealthiest areas of the city. Situated just outside the city center and along the beautiful rocky coast of Cape Elizabeth is Fort Williams. Once a military outpost for coastal defense, it is now the home of the oldest lighthouse in Maine. First illuminated on January 10, 1791, Port Head Light has since stood at the gateway to Portland Harbor for mariners traveling Maine’s perilous coast. A short photo stop will be made before returning to your ship. Note: At Portland Head Light, walking is at guest’s discretion; from the bus parking area to the lighthouse guests must walk approximately 200 yards over even and uneven terrain with a few steps. less

Explore Gaspe, its surroundings and magnificent Forillon National Park. In the Micmac language, Gaspe means Land’s End. Gaspe is associated with the beginning of western history in North America; the cross that Jacques Cartier erected here in 1534 has made it the birthplace of Canada. The town is unique, covering 606 square miles (975 square km), with 93 miles (150 km) of coastline exposed to the sea! Wherever one is in Gaspe, water – either fresh or salty – is never far away. The deep, coastal indentation is the Bay of Gaspe – a magnificent body of water sheltered by the surrounding mountains. Edged by stretches of sandy or pebble beaches, the bay becomes the gathering place for swimmers, boaters and water-sports enthusiasts. A visit to Forillon National Park is sure to be a unique adventure. The tip of Forillon, which was declared a Canadian national park in order to preserve the wild beauty of its coast, reveals various geological formations and phenomena up to 450 million years old. Its majestic landscapes cover a 152 square mile (244 square km) area that is carved out of the sea, cliffs and mountains. Here, where the land joins the sea, are born pebble beaches, dizzying cliffs, small coves, rocky capes and fine sand beaches. The presence of ten different rock formations, colonies of seabirds and enigmatic Arctic-alpine plants give this park its unique character. The park also bears witness to an important cultural and historical heritage. The mark humans have left on the Forillon landscape speaks of how closely their lifestyle was attuned to the natural environment. In fact, 'Harmony between man, the land and the sea' was chosen as the theme that would guide promotional activities in the park precisely because of the significant natural and cultural characteristics inherent to Forillon. To the west of the village, you can explore Fort Peninsule, an old lookout and vestige of the Second World War. A little-known episode of the Second World War took place right in the Bay of Gaspe. Located in the northern area of Forillon National Park, Cap-des-Rosiers Lighthouse, erected in 1858, is one of the tallest beacons built by the Canadian Coast Guard in Quebec. Canada's tallest lighthouse, it soars 112 feet (34.1 meters) into the air. The Cap-Bon-Ami Sea Cliffs constitute the rock walls corresponding to the peak front and are located at the northern side of the Forillon Peninsula. Those escarpments are huge especially near the sea, from the end of the Cap-des-Rosiers plains to Forillon extremity. All of the littoral wall vary in heights and can go to 197 feet (180 meters) at the south-east of Cap-bon-Ami. Seabirds give the park a definite maritime feel. Each year, the spring migrations bring double-crested cormorant, black guillemot, black-legged kittiwake, gulls and razorbill, all attracted by suitable breeding sites and an abundance of food in the waters of the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Gaspe Bay. The sea cliffs of the Cap-bon-Ami area accommodate the park's largest gathering of birds during the breeding period, including thousands of black-legged kittiwakes. Designated a historic monument and a national historic site of Canada, the Manoir Le Boutillier was constructed around 1850 by John Le Boutillier, a leading cod merchant originally from Jersey (one of the Channel Islands). The lively tour introduces visitors to a facet of the regional heritage of the Gaspe Peninsula; the restored manor is as it was when John Le Boutillier occupied the house (1850-1860). Wrap up your tour with lunch at Centre Culturel Le Griffon, a unique cultural center with a maritime atmosphere. Located in a former authentic cold store built in 1942, The Centre Culturel Le Griffon houses a number of services for visitors including the Cafe de L'Anse, a historic exhibit on the time when cooperatives came into being, and an artists' studio. Note: Walking is on both flat and gravel surfaces with 1 1/2 flights of stairs at Le Boutillier Manor. Fort Peninsula and LeBoutiller Manor are not wheelchair accessible. less

Discover Gaspe's rich history on foot. Gespeg, in the native tongue of the Amerindian Mi'gmaq, means 'land’s end' and yet, Gaspe is usually associated with the beginning of western history in North America. A highly diverse cultural mosaic, Gaspe encompasses myriad landscapes and is home to people of many origins. The landscape and daily life in each sector of the Greater Gaspe have their own unique character and color. The deep, coastal indentation is Gaspe Bay – a magnificent body of water sheltered by the surrounding mountains. Edged by stretches of sandy or pebble beaches, the bay becomes the gathering place for swimmers, boaters and those who enjoy other water sports. Following the example set by the St. Malo explorer, the Gaspe heritage walk gives you the opportunity to learn more about and appreciate the Gaspe’s historical and cultural heritage by showing you the architecture and commemorative art that speak of the past. Travel through time and rediscover Gaspe as these sites whisper their tales of the time Native peoples first inhabited the region and the moment Jacques Cartier laid claim to the land. Located near the Musee de la Gaspesie, a regional museum, the Jacques Cartier Monument National Historic Site was inaugurated in 1982 by the Historic Sites and Monuments. Because of the modern and audacious architecture of the Christ-Roi Cathedral and 1934 Commemorative Cross, luminosity plays a singular role in this wooden cathedral. The building also holds a historic and artistic heritage that is unique on the Gaspe Peninsula. Located across from the Christ-Roi Cathedral, this celebrated 33-feet (10-meter) granite monolith symbolizes the events of 1534 when Jacques Cartier took possession of the territory for the King of France. Enjoy your walk! Note: Walking portion of the tour is for approximately one mile (1.6 km) on uneven ground. This tour uses an accessible mini-coach equipped with a motorized wheelchair lift and traces over 400 years history of Canada's oldest incorporated city's history. As your guide takes you past prominent landmarks and historic buildings, you'll be introduced to the many fascinating personalities and events that made Saint John the greatest little city in the east. Your first stop is at Wolastoq Park, a great place to survey the harbor. Next, you'll stop to view the famous Reversing Falls Rapids at Fallsview Park, touted as the sight no one should miss on a visit to Saint John. From the bluffs, your guide will explain that twice daily the powerful tides of the Bay of Fundy rise faster than the river can empty. When this happens, the mighty tides push the river water upstream, causing the rapids to run in the opposite direction and the St. John River to flow backwards. You'll have approximately 20 minutes to explore the Old City Market and chat with the vendors before boarding your coach and returning to the ship. Note: The accessible Handy-Bus with motorized lift can accommodate up to 700 pounds combined weight including wheelchair/scooter. Lift is 32" wide, 72 inches tall and 60 inches long. Ground is level, both paved and gravel. Minimum capacity required for tour to operate is 6 participants, maximum vehicle capacity is 12. The number of wheelchairs/scooters that can be accommodated is very limited. To confirm availability before booking this tour, please call 1-866-625-1167. less

Founded in 1753, Lunenburg has since been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of Nova Scotia’s most historic towns and a splendid example of a British Colonial settlement. While the drive is approximately 75 minutes, the wait is worth it, once you arrive in this charming scenic waterfront town. Enjoying the historic and colorful working waterfront, you can expect your tour guide to regale you with intriguing tales of shipbuilding, fishing, rum running, and even the buried treasure of Oak Island, all part of the local lore. You’ll also enjoy the Lunenburgers’ unique accent - no doubt the result of their Swiss and German forebears (German was spoken here well into the 1800s). You’ll have some time to explore on your own, perhaps to visit the Fisheries Museum of Lunenburg (small fee), where the 'Bluenose II', a replica of Nova Scotia’s famous racing schooner of the 1920s was built in 1963. Best explored on foot, your experienced guide will make the history of Quebec come alive as you walk the charming cobblestone streets of the Old Town. In the heart of the Lower Town, and site of the first settlement of Quebec, is Place Royale. The typical stone buildings surrounding this historic square were once the homes of wealthy merchants. Along its narrow cobblestone streets you'll find an array of quaint boutiques, specialty shops and outdoor cafes as well as strolling musicians, jugglers and street performers. From Lower Town to Upper Town, enjoy a short funicular ride to reach the Chateau Frontenac area. Perched on a hill overlooking the St. Lawrence River, the castle-like Chateau is the most well-known landmark in Quebec. It was here that Roosevelt, Churchill and Mackenzie King met to discuss their strategy during WW II. In front of the Chateau lies the romantic boardwalk of Dufferin Terrace. From here, enjoy a spectacular view of the St. Lawrence River, Ile d'Orleans and the Laurentian Mountains. Continuing through the walled city, pass Place d'Armes, the Seminary of Quebec and the Ursuline Convent before returning to your ship. Board your mini-coach for a scenic drive to Rough Point, the magnificent English manor estate of famed heiress Doris Duke. Built by Frederick W. Vanderbilt in 1889 on a windswept promontory overlooking the Atlantic, Duke's father purchased the home in 1922 from the widow of railroad magnate William Leeds for less than $200,000. He spent an additional $700,000 enlarging the house to 105 magnificent rooms. Preserved with Duke’s original furnishings, the home showcases her extraordinary collection of European art, French furniture, Turkish carpets and Chinese artifacts. Among the treasures is a 15th century collection of Ming Dynasty porcelain, 16th century tapestries from Brussels, and a number of Gothic and Renaissance paintings.
Watch for the ivory inset side tables bearing the marks of Catherine the Great in the Yellow Room. Duke died in 1993, bequeathing Rough Point to the Newport Restoration Foundation, along with all clothing, jewelry, and furniture in the house.
