Drive along the northeast coast further north to reach the Malpais de la Corona, a widespread plain of weather-beaten lava stone formed by the last eruptions of the Corona Crater over 3,000 years ago. Through the years, singular vegetation unfolded itself, which added a special charm to this otherwise poor and dry landscape. In this area you’ll visit Jameos del Agua, a partially open cave which is part of a huge lava tunnel. The famous native artist Cesar Manrique transformed this cave into a small paradise. As you enter, you can see the subterranean lake roofed by a huge arch of lava stones. Small, blind Albino crabs that are normally only found in deep-sea areas inhabit this lake. A tropical garden with beautiful plants is set up on an open area of the cave with an artificial pool in the center. Passing through the garden there is the entrance to the concert hall, a natural auditorium with capacity for more than 500 persons. Continue to Guatiza Village to visit the Cactus Garden where Cesar Manrique converted a natural gravel mine into a beautifully designed garden with more than 1,000 species of cacti from all over the world. The interior structure is circular with walls made up of terraces descending from the ground in levels displaying the different varieties of cactus. Surrounding the garden, you can also see the local cultivations of cactus with cochineal parasite used as a natural component for coloring and as ingredient for some other drinks and products. Your next stop will be at Tahiche Village, where you’ll visit the Cesar Manrique Foundation, which purpose is to preserve the environment and combine the beauties of the island with natural protection and decoration. The artist’s former house, now converted into a foundation, is a two-level structure built on five huge natural volcanic bubbles and is the best example of his ideas. The upper floor is inspired by the traditional architecture of Lanzarote and the underground level takes advantage of the five natural volcanic bubbles adapted for habitation and linked by small corridors. It contains some of his own work and a private collection of contemporary art by artists such as Picasso, Tapies, Miro, etc. The Foundation is also a center of art and culture popularization; in an adjacent building you’ll find organized exhibitions and art conferences during the year. From here you’ll return to your ship. less

Located on the west coast of Naples, you’ll find the still-active volcano, Mount Vesuvius. For the adventurous traveler, this is the ideal way to explore the volcano that destroyed the city of Pompeii. You’ll arrive at the base of the National Park of Vesuvius, from where you’ll board a special 4 x 4 coach. Ecologic and equipped with air-conditioning, it will take you to a height of about 3,000 feet. During the drive up the path in the National Park, you’ll relax looking at the Gulf of Naples. Once at 3,000 feet, you’ll proceed on foot for another 1,000 feet up on a narrow zigzagging path. Once on the rim of the crater walls, you’ll meet an official alpine guide and walk part of the way around the edge to enjoy this natural phenomenon and, of course, a panoramic view that includes Naples and the entire bay. After visiting the crater, you’ll walk back to the 4 x 4 coach, which will take you to the motorcoach parking for your return drive to Naples and your ship. Note: The tour will not operate for Norwegian Jade winter sailings from the end of November through mid-April. Participants must be able to walk approximately 1 1/2 miles on an incline. This tour is not recommended for guests with a history of heart disease or high blood pressure and does not include lunch. During summer months expect extreme heat; we recommend that you dress in layers, wear a hat and bring bottled water. In the event of bad weather and the closure of Mt. Vesuvius crater, this tour will not operate. less

At the ruins of Pompeii, you'll discover the archaeological excavations of a lost city buried deep beneath the ash from Mt. Vesuvius. Entering by the sea gate, your walking tour takes in the city's baths, villas, theaters and wrestling grounds. Plaster casts mark the positions of the fallen that were swiftly overcome by volcanic ash. Your guide will point out the remarkably preserved remains that hint at daily Roman life, their customs, cuisine and how they entertained, decorated and lived. Highlights include stunning frescoes and elaborately detailed mosaic-inlaid floors of wealthy homeowners' villas, as Pompeii was a vacation community for high society. On the way back to Naples, you’ll stop at a cameo factory where artisans have honed their craft for generations. You'll have some time to shop for handmade seashell and coral jewelry, including intricately carved brooches, rings and bracelets. Sit back and enjoy classic Pizza Margherita at a typical Neapolitan pizzeria accompanied by a mixed green salad and beverage. Before heading to our next stop, take a sightseeing loop around the city for a quick orientation, driving past the round-towered Castel Nuovo, San Carlo Opera House, Umberto Gallery, the Royal Palace and San Francesco di Paola Church. Driving along the waterfront, notice the site where Naples was first founded: Castel dell'Ovo or 'egg castle'. Its curious name comes from a Roman legend that claimed the castle was built over an egg placed on the site with the belief that if the egg broke Naples would fall. Visit The National Archaeological Museum next. Originally cavalry barracks, Charles of Bourbon established the museum in the late 18th century to house the fantastic Farnese Collection that he had inherited. Highlights include the Farnese Bull and a classical Roman sculpture depicting figures from Greek mythology. The museum houses a collection of murals, frescoes and mosaics from Pompeii and Herculaneum. Note: The tour doesn't operate on Tuesdays. During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers and bring bottled water. Not much has changed here through the ages - the mill is still driven by a horse. Enjoy a demonstration of how olive oil is made, the old fashioned way. After visiting Orasac Village you will continue towards the small town of Ston which is the "oyster capital" of Croatia. This little town is often called a smaller version of Dubrovnik. Especially notable are the magnificent 5 km long walls surrounding the town. Its construction started in 1317 and finished in the 16th century and it is one of the longest defensive walls in the world. Interesting are also the ancient salt pans that were in use during the Dubrovnik Republic; salt is still produced here. When you mention Ston in Croatia, people usually think of the oysters. Oyster farms are found all around the area. In Mali Ston, board a local boat where your host will welcome you on board and introduce you to oyster & mussel beds, their production, and you’ll even have the opportunity to taste fresh mussels and oysters. After this very unique experience step back ashore to enjoy sea food specialties served in a charming local tavern. After, return to Dubrovnik, where your guide will show you the highlights of the Old Town, followed by free time for further independent exploration. Note: This tour is not suitable for passengers who have difficulties walking, getting in and out of the boat or negotiating steps.
