Start your walk in the city center. Visit several local culinary shops and restaurants for samples of pastry, locally produced coffee, chocolate and a taste of Scanian tapas - a tribute to our Swedish smorgasbord! You’ll have the opportunity to buy products in the shops visited. Between the visits, learn more about the history of this 900-year-old city. St. Mary's Church, Bruksgatan, small cozy streets, numerous boutiques and a myriad of restaurants are located in these old-town quarters. Next, walk by Sweden's first pedestrian street - Kullagatan, which celebrated 50 years in 2011. Here, you can also see the Concert Hall, City Theatre and the Dunkers Culture house. Helsingborg is situated right by the sea with a boardwalk and shopping within easy reach. Watching over Helsingborg is the 34 meter-high tower core, which is all that remains of the stately Helsingborg Castle. From the top there is a stunning view of the Sound and Denmark. On clear days one can see all the way to Copenhagen and the Oresund Bridge. Note: This is a walking tour. All food samples and drinks are included; additional purchases are optional. Different tasting stops will be made for samples of food, chocolate and coffee; please be aware that these will be samples only. The Shetlands, located 112 miles from the most northerly point to the southern tip, is the cross-roads of the northern seas, and unlike anywhere else in Scotland. They roll out in a long vista of moor and wiry pasture, penetrated by great sea inlets. Spectacular vertical stacks coated with seabird colonies, cliffs and coves curtained with wild-flowers; hidden white beaches on an endless coast, small crofts and settlements sheltering by the sea-edge. As you come ashore, you’ll notice the main town of Lerwick, with its narrow Main Street and small shops. Climbing out of Lerwick, the road travels south and you’ll soon be seeing the vistas of hillsides. Turn off the main road to travel through small agricultural areas where sheep farming is important. You’ll see the distinctive black and brown Shetland sheep grazing in pastures enclosed by neat dry-stone walls, the product of local quarries. You’ll also travel across heather-lad hills to Burra Isle and to Scalloway, the former capital of the Shetlands. See Scalloway Castle, a forbidding ruin dominating the town, built by Earl Patrick Stewart in 1600 using forced local labor. Stewart was the notorious despot who tyrannized Orkney and the Shetlands, where he extorted crushing taxes and fines from the people of the Shetlands. His cruelty eventually led to his downfall and, in 1615, he and his son were executed in Edinburgh. Built in Medieval style, the roofless shell, with corner turrets and gables, stands on a narrow promontory by the water. Today, it stands side by side with the commerce of a busy fishing port, a silent sentinel. Your tour route then heads towards the fertile Tingwall Valley. The road passes a collection of farm buildings, and then suddenly there are belts of trees, rising abruptly amongst the barren hills. From the comparatively tranquil landscapes of the Tingwall Valley, you’ll head towards Weisdale Voe where the landscape changes dramatically. Here you'll pay a visit to the small workshops of Shetland jewelers which manufacture a range of silver and gold jewelry featuring Celtic, Viking and local wildlife designs. The showroom also stocks a selection of local crafts. The excursion itinerary then takes to the eastern side of mainland Shetland and returns towards Lerwick. less

The community of Giske consists of several islands of which you’ll visit two: Giske and Godøy Islands. Nowadays, the inhabitants have ferry-free connection with the town of Ålesund and the mainland. Giske is known as the Saga Island because the Viking Chieftain Rollo was born here. You’ll travel via bridges and undersea-tunnels to reach Giske, a fairly flat and fertile island. Then, visit the Giske Church dating back to 1150. This church was originally a chapel, and it belonged to the mighty Giske-family. Continue to Godøy Island and the small fishing village of Alnes facing the open sea. Here, you’ll have an optional visit to the lighthouse, only to those who feel they can climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse. On clear days, the view of the ocean and the many islands is fantastic; a great memory to take back home. Note: At Alnes Lighthouse, there are 87 steps, but the walk is optional. The amount of walking is approximately 200 yards. Tour may operate in reverse order. less

A drive to the southern part of the Lanzarote will take you past the picturesque villages of Macher and Uga and cross black lava streams before arriving at the southwest coast of the island, passing by Los Hervideros where the sea water seems to boil in a volcanic cave. After a brief photo stop and a short drive, you’ll reach the Timanfaya National Park, a natural museum of unique beauty. Bizarre craters, streams of lava, and fields of ashes are mixed here with a nearly unrealistic lunar landscape, all formed during the last eruption in the 18th century. Upon arrival to Islote de Hilario, a crater with the highest surface temperatures in the region, you’ll experience still-existing activity not far underground as you gather around for the fun demonstrations. The geothermal energy is so strong that water gushes up and dry weed catches fire within seconds. At the restaurant El Diablo, located at the top of the hill, food is cooked on a natural grill powered by the heat within the earth below. Board a coach to embark on a tour of the Fire Mountains called "Lunar Route" which goes deep inside the heart of the National Park and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Through a recorded narration, you’ll learn about the history of the volcanic eruptions and see how slowly life conquers the inhospitable landscape with very few endemic plants. From here you’ll drive to the wine-growing area of La Geria where the locals have modified grape-growing through the centuries in order to preserve the vines from the harsh natural elements and provide a special cultivation for the grapes that produce the famous Malvasia wine. These vines are grown inside dimple-like craters and surrounded by volcanic stone semi-circles (called Zocos), built for each individual vine to provide much needed protection from the fierce winds. After this photo stop you’ll return to your ship. Note: Because Fire Mountains is the most visited attraction, to avoid delays at the entrance, tour order may vary but all mentioned sites will be covered. No professional camera or video equipment is allowed at Timanfaya National Park, including the camel area. Comfortable shoes and a light jacket are recommended. less

Drive through the lovely Tuscan countryside en route to the historic town of Pisa, located on the banks of the Arno River. Enjoy a short trolley ride that takes you directly to Miracle Square, next to the famous Leaning Tower. During World War II, much of Pisa was destroyed by German and Allied bombing, however the cathedral, baptistery and famous leaning tower escaped unharmed. Arriving at the Field of Miracles, you’ll join your guide for a climb up the 294 steps to discover the world-famous Leaning Tower. Built to display the wealth of Pisa, the bell tower began leaning during construction because of the foundation settling unevenly as builders reached the fourth story. The builders compensated for the angle but the tower continued its tilt. Today, the tower leans 14 degrees from perpendicular. Continue down to the open-air square for a brief explanation of the Cathedral and the Baptistery. You’ll have some free time to browse for souvenirs and gifts at the many stalls lining the walk to the Field of Miracles. Note: Participants must be at least 8 years of age to climb the Tower. No bags are allowed for the Tower visit for security reasons. Even though the tower has reopened to the public, Italian authorities have strict limitations on the amount of persons allowed in per hour/day, and time limitations make it impossible to offer the visit to all the guests at the same time. The walking distance between the Field of Miracles in Pisa, and the bus parking area is approximately 15 minutes each way. Please note that on public holidays, most major stores will be closed; however, most leather and souvenir shops will be open. Since you’ll be visiting religious venues, please dress respectfully; no bare shoulders or shorts allowed. less

This evening, you’ll have the unique opportunity to visit St. Mark’s Basilica after the crowds have left and it closes to the public. Unlike daytime visits, this exclusive opening of the basilica lets you admire this magnificent structure when it turns silent, just listening to the narration of your guide. A motor launch ride down the Giudecca Canal takes you to Riva degli Schiavoni, a short walk from the square. You’ll meet your guide in St. Marks’s Square, the heart of Venice and meeting place, living room and promenade for both Venetians and visitors. The church was built on the plan of a Greek cross in Byzantine style. The beautiful facade shows different architectural styles with gold mosaic arches rising above the carved, Romanesque portal; the rooftop is crowned with five domes, reminiscent of Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. Showcased in the center are the four bronze horses brought from Byzantium in 1204. The inside is rich in mosaics, with many of them dating back to Byzantium. St. Mark's Basilica houses other extraordinary treasures, the finest being the gold altar screen, encrusted with more than 1,000 jewels and Byzantine enamels. The marble floors are entirely tessellated with geometric patterns and animal designs. After this amazing experience, you can have some free time. Note: Tour participation is limited, but is subject to a minimum number of participants to operate. As you’ll be visiting a religious site, no bare shoulders or knees are allowed. No photography allowed inside the basilica. Venice is a city built on and encompassed by water. Most tours require a lot of walking and climbing of stairs over many bridges and therefore are not suggested for anyone with walking difficulties. This particular tour has 500 steps, uneven and cobblestone terrain. THIS TOUR IS ONLY AVAILABLE FOR NORWEGIAN SPIRIT SAILINGS. The tour is not available for the April 29th or September 20th 2013 sailings. less
