Your tour starts with a drive toward the town of Trogir, situated in a small island sandwiched between the mainland and the larger island of Ciovo, connected to the mainland by a bridge. The narrow streets of this compact town fan out in disarray from an ancient central square with stone buildings evoking life in the old days. As you walk the ancient streets, you’ll see magnificent buildings such as the Cathedral of St. Lawrence, probably the finest example of sacral architecture in Croatia, with a world famous 13th century portal, carved by a local artist. After some free time, continue toward Medena Hotel Beach & Resort, only 7 kilometers from Trogir. Your tour includes access to the changing rooms and showers only, but there are sun beds and umbrellas available for rent. Here you’ll spend approximately three hours at leisure to take in the activity of your choice. The gravel beach is located 150 meters from the main hotel complex and can be reached by taking the concrete path or a stairway through the thick pine woods. The hotel beach offers countless possibilities for entertainment and recreation. From classic sports content, they offer 6 clay tennis courts, mini golf, fitness training course through the pine woods, a five-a-side football court, a volleyball court, a basketball court and a beach volleyball court. Your youngest family members can enjoy the children's animation and a variety of offers at the children's playground. For a boost of adrenaline, try some of the various water sports: Jet Ski, parachuting, tuba, banana boat, waterskiing, surfing and sailing. All these activities are at an additional cost. You can have a snack or full lunch in one of nearby beach bars at your own expense. Note: This tour is only available from mid-May to mid-October; price includes access to changing rooms and showers. Please bring towel from the ship. During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. Enjoy an overview of this legendary city’s best-known attractions, including buildings of Mudejar and Gothic architecture, lovely parks and the bullring. Departing the port, your sightseeing drive will take you along Alameda Boulevard en route to the hilltop location of Gibralfaro. As you walk along the ramparts crowning the 560-feet-high summit, admire splendid views over the city, the harbor and the bullring. Then your coach will take you back down to the Plaza de la Merced for a short walk to the Alcazaba. At the foot of this ancient fortress, view the excavated ruins of a Roman amphitheater. The restored Alcazaba dates back to the 11th century when the king of Granada ordered the fortress built and modeled on the style of the Alhambra. After the Christian conquest, the Catholic kings took over the Alcazaba and King Philip IV used it as his residence when visiting Malaga. Leaving the Alcazaba, your walk continues to the cathedral. You’ll admire its fabulous interior, the exquisitely carved choir stalls and other fine examples of Spanish Renaissance sculpture. Note: This tour involves approximately two miles (1,200 meters) of walking on uneven ground, as well as many steps at both the Gibralfaro Castle and the Alcazaba. Your tour begins with a visit to the typical market, in Funchal’s center, where an infinite variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, regional articles, etc. can be seen. A few steps form the local market you'll have the chance to visit the embroidery factory and taste the world-famous Madeira wine. The tour continues to the village of Monte, where you have time to explore this small village perched up in the hills overlooking Funchal, and formerly a health resort for Europe's high society. After this visit, you'll have the opportunity to experience a voyage by cable car with nature at your feet! Made up by 12 cabins of eight seats each, this unforgettable voyage to the Botanical Gardens will take about seven minutes and offers its visitors a new panoramic route with privileged sights of not only Funchal’s bay but also over the River of Joao Gomes, a place of rare and exotic beauty made up by an important nucleus of Laurissilva forest. Since the 17th century, Madeira Island had been waiting for a botanical garden, a dream that came true in 1960. Located less than two miles from the center of Funchal at Quinta do Bom Sucesso - a private Quinta belonging to the Reid’s family - where the climatic conditions are much in favor of exuberant vegetation, the Botanical Garden boasts harmonious forms, contrasting colors and more than 2,000 plants. Throughout the gardens you can find the plants labeled with their scientific names, common name and origin. Note: A jacket is recommended as Madeira has a microclimate. Cable car is not suitable for passengers with walking difficulties as access is similar to a ski lift; i.e. cable car does not stop for boarding, rather it moves in slowly. Not recommended for persons with walking difficulties. This tour involves an approximately five-minute walk from the local market to the embroidery factory and an extensive amount of walking at the gardens. Norwegian Jade guests sailing on February 9 and 18, and April 3 and 12, 2012 will not stop at the market, as it is closed on Sundays and holidays. less
