Take a journey for approximately 45 minutes to the ancient ruins of Izapa. From it’s beginnings as a small village, Izapa grew into the region’s most influential cultural and commercial center with a population of possibly up to 10,000 people. Izapa brought together many of Mesoamerica’s ancient cultures and many believe it may be the site of origin of the sacred Mayan Calendar; although, much study remains to be done in order to unlock these secrets. Next, travel by bus to Chocolate Discovery, where you’ll be able to see how the cocoa beans are transformed into chocolate right at the main square. Also, you’ll see and sample the local cuisine, as well as see a variety of local handcrafts and exotic flowers of the region. Local dances and marimba players will be sharing their skills with lively performances. After a stop at the local historic church, you will be on your way back to your ship. Note: Guests should wear a hat and comfortable shoes. Bring eco-friendly sunscreen and bug repellent. Most areas are not wheelchair accessible. less

The Shetlands are a mosaic of over a hundred islands where land and water blend. The most northerly part of the British Isles, it is inhabited by approximately 22,000 people and an abundance of wildlife. It is a land shaped by the sea from dramatic sculptured cliffs to tranquil sandy bays. The delightful and inquisitive Shetland pony will come looking for food as your tour bus stops wherever possible for photos. The shaggy coats and flowing manes of the ponies equip them to withstand severe weather conditions; they have been in the Shetlands since at least Viking times. Then, travel south to visit Jarlshof. A violent storm in 1905 uncovered this remarkable archaeological site, revealing remains from the Stone Age and settlements from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The name Jarlshof, or "Laird's House", refers to the community of the Norse Jarls that resided here in the 7th century. You’ll be able to independently explore the remains of these village settlements, sprawled over a low green promontory by the sea. Your tour continues the short distance to the small historic village of Hoswick and a visit to the Hoswick Visitor Center. Here, you can have an understanding of the history and culture of the Shetlands from the interpretive displays and by watching the traditional knitting skills of the islanders. There is also the opportunity to purchase an original Shetland garment from the wide variety of cashmere or lamb wool items on sale in the knitwear shop. You’ll also see the small agricultural areas where sheep farming is important. Furthermore, see the distinctive black and brown Shetland sheep grazing in pastures enclosed by neat dry-stone walls, and small communities where peat is still used to heat homes. Your return to Lerwick will be across moorland. less

At first sight you’ll see that Barcelona is a city with charming streets, busy with people and full of life. The old town districts are famed for their historical monuments, narrow streets and Bohemian atmosphere, and are a perfect place for a stroll. The city also has the biggest selection of modernist architecture making it a genuine open-air museum. Barcelona is the only European capital with almost three miles of beaches where you can enjoy the most modern amenities. From the pier, head to the Sagrada Familia, passing through the Barceloneta Quarter or Fisherman Area, and Calle Marina. Your guide will offer you an explanation of all the details related to the church. Continue with a panoramic drive along Passeig de Gracia, the best-known boulevard in town. See one of the masterpieces of Gaudi’s architecture: the Casa Mila, best known by Barcelonians as 'La Pedrera' and Casa Batllo. Reaching Diagonal Avenue you enter the upper Eixample Area where the Sagrada Familia church is. After this, continue to the Montjuic Hill, claimed by the city on the occasion of the 1929 International Exposition, when the mountain was developed and trade fair halls and sports installations were constructed as well as the parks and gardens which are to be found all over the mountain. Today it is the most important recreational area in Barcelona. Drive by the Olympic Ring and make a brief stop at the Mirador del Alcalde for a panoramic view of the city. The Shetlands, located 112 miles from the most northerly point to the southern tip, is the cross-roads of the northern seas, and unlike anywhere else in Scotland. They roll out in a long vista of moor and wiry pasture, penetrated by great sea inlets. Spectacular vertical stacks coated with seabird colonies, cliffs and coves curtained with wild-flowers; hidden white beaches on an endless coast, small crofts and settlements sheltering by the sea-edge. As you come ashore, you’ll notice the main town of Lerwick, with its narrow Main Street and small shops. Climbing out of Lerwick, the road travels south and you’ll soon be seeing the vistas of hillsides. Turn off the main road to travel through small agricultural areas where sheep farming is important. You’ll see the distinctive black and brown Shetland sheep grazing in pastures enclosed by neat dry-stone walls, the product of local quarries. You’ll also travel across heather-lad hills to Burra Isle and to Scalloway, the former capital of the Shetlands. See Scalloway Castle, a forbidding ruin dominating the town, built by Earl Patrick Stewart in 1600 using forced local labor. Stewart was the notorious despot who tyrannized Orkney and the Shetlands, where he extorted crushing taxes and fines from the people of the Shetlands. His cruelty eventually led to his downfall and, in 1615, he and his son were executed in Edinburgh. Built in Medieval style, the roofless shell, with corner turrets and gables, stands on a narrow promontory by the water. Today, it stands side by side with the commerce of a busy fishing port, a silent sentinel. Your tour route then heads towards the fertile Tingwall Valley. The road passes a collection of farm buildings, and then suddenly there are belts of trees, rising abruptly amongst the barren hills. From the comparatively tranquil landscapes of the Tingwall Valley, you’ll head towards Weisdale Voe where the landscape changes dramatically. Here you'll pay a visit to the small workshops of Shetland jewelers which manufacture a range of silver and gold jewelry featuring Celtic, Viking and local wildlife designs. The showroom also stocks a selection of local crafts. The excursion itinerary then takes to the eastern side of mainland Shetland and returns towards Lerwick. less

First, you will pass Perlan or 'The Pearl', a glass dome on the top of the hot-water tanks in Reykjavik. Then, you’ll continue through Reykjavik’s suburbs, towards Hafnarfjordur. From here, you’ll drive through the rugged lava fields of the Reykjanes peninsula towards the Blue Lagoon, where you will stop for approximately two hours to indulge in the waters of the lagoon itself. The Blue Lagoon owes its existence to the nearby geothermal power plant. A new facility was opened in 1999 offering a tax-free shop, café and very good changing-room facilities. The water of the Lagoon is 98° F warm, mineral-rich and reputed for its healing properties. The blue color of the water, the steam and the 13-foot high lava wall surrounding the Lagoon succeed in creating a unique atmosphere. This natural and very popular health spa is now a major attraction in the region and considered to be one of the most visited places on the island. Explore one of the most interesting Mayan sites in the region, a collection of ancient stone carvings dating from roughly 300 BCE to 100 BCE. These carvings were found at the Izapa Ruins and depict the Mayan ideas of the creation of the universe and their religious beliefs. Among the carvings is a particularly interesting and complex one called Stella 5 that depicts the Tree of Life as well as about a dozen human figures, animals and more. This complex carving has led to many different theories about its subject matter. Most theories concern the Mayan religious beliefs; however some involve speculation about visitors from other continents before the arrival of Columbus. The Tree of Life in the Mayan world is depicted as a Ceiba tree. This tall tree is commonly found in Chiapas and the Mayan jungles. It is easily identifiable by its extraordinary height, high crown and large, buttressed roots. For the Mayans, the tree represents a connection between the three realms of the universe- the underworld, earth and the heavens. Afterwards, take a short bus ride to Chocolate Discovery. Here, you’ll learn about the discovery and history of the sacred cacao bean and its importance to the Mayan people. Learn how the cocoa beans are transformed into chocolate right at the main square. Also, see a variety of local handcrafts and exotic flowers of the region. Local dances and marimba players will share their skills with lively performances. After a short stop to see the local church, you will be on your way back to your ship. Note: Guests should wear a hat and comfortable shoes. Bring eco-friendly sunscreen and bug repellent. A drive to the southern part of the Lanzarote will take you past the picturesque villages of Macher and Uga and cross black lava streams before arriving at the southwest coast of the island, passing by Los Hervideros where the sea water seems to boil in a volcanic cave. After a brief photo stop and a short drive, you’ll reach the Timanfaya National Park, a natural museum of unique beauty. Bizarre craters, streams of lava, and fields of ashes are mixed here with a nearly unrealistic lunar landscape, all formed during the last eruption in the 18th century. Upon arrival to Islote de Hilario, a crater with the highest surface temperatures in the region, you’ll experience still-existing activity not far underground as you gather around for the fun demonstrations. The geothermal energy is so strong that water gushes up and dry weed catches fire within seconds. At the restaurant El Diablo, located at the top of the hill, food is cooked on a natural grill powered by the heat within the earth below. Board a coach to embark on a tour of the Fire Mountains called "Lunar Route" which goes deep inside the heart of the National Park and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Through a recorded narration, you’ll learn about the history of the volcanic eruptions and see how slowly life conquers the inhospitable landscape with very few endemic plants. From here you’ll drive to the wine-growing area of La Geria where the locals have modified grape-growing through the centuries in order to preserve the vines from the harsh natural elements and provide a special cultivation for the grapes that produce the famous Malvasia wine. These vines are grown inside dimple-like craters and surrounded by volcanic stone semi-circles (called Zocos), built for each individual vine to provide much needed protection from the fierce winds. After this photo stop you’ll return to your ship. Note: Because Fire Mountains is the most visited attraction, to avoid delays at the entrance, tour order may vary but all mentioned sites will be covered. At first sight you’ll see that Barcelona is a city with charming streets, busy with people and full of life. The old town districts are famed for their historical monuments, narrow streets and Bohemian atmosphere, and are a perfect place for a stroll. The city also has the biggest selection of modernist architecture, making it a genuine open-air museum. See one of the masterpieces of Gaudi’s architecture: the Casa Mila, best known by Barcelonians as ‘La Pedrera’ and Casa Batllo. Reaching Diagonal Avenue, enter the upper Eixample Area where the Sagrada Familia church is. After this, continue to the Montjuic Hill, claimed by the city on the occasion of the 1929 International Exposition, when the mountain was developed and trade fair halls and sports installations were constructed, as well as the parks and gardens which are to be found all over the mountain. Today it is the most important recreational area in Barcelona. Drive by the Olympic Ring and make a brief stop at the Mirador del Alcalde for a panoramic view of the city. Finally, arrive at the Gothic Quarter for a walking visit. The facade of the cathedral and octagonal dome are Neo-Gothic structures of the 19th century, designed according to a 15th-century drawing. This monastery was built at the beginning of the 17th century and houses a Colonial museum and a chapel dedicated to Virgen de la Candelaria, patron saint of Cartagena. Next, make a photo stop at San Felipe Fortress. This castle defended the city from many attacks and withstood the bloodiest assault from the British Admiral Vernon. The highest peak in Spain, the highest point in the Atlantic Ocean, the third highest volcano on a volcanic ocean island, and World Heritage Site by UNESCO are all titles that this grandiose mountain can claim, and an absolute must when you visit Tenerife. Drive past the university town of La Laguna, a charming, beautiful, monumental city in which historic buildings of great value abound, situated in the Aguere Valley. Continue along the spine of the island, straight to the Esperanza Forest, a great example of the endemic flora and fauna of the volcanic island with its pines and eucalyptus trees. While traveling up through the Esperanza Forest to Cañadas del Teide you’ll certainly be impressed by the chromatic changes of the landscape. The green backdrops turn gradually into grey, ochre, red or even blue, common colors from volcanic areas, always crowned by the stunning Mount Teide in its midst. On your way uphill, stop briefly to capture breathtaking volcanic landscapes and sights in pictures. Prior to entering the National Park, stop for coffee at a local restaurant surrounded by natural wealth and lava stone formations. Journey then to Los Roques de Garcia at Mount Teide National Park, a protected territory declared as such in 1954, covering an area of approximately 7,688 acres (18,990 hectares). The park is in fact the interior of the Teide’s crater and houses an extensive unique endemic flora and fauna. Behold and stroll through the lava fields of the Mount Teide, where you’ll discover one of the most pictured and famous icons from Tenerife, El Roque Cinchado, also known as God’s Finger, a curious lava stone formation that looks like a finger pointing up, where a brief stop will be made before your journey back to Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Note: As you will ascend to an altitude of over 7,200 feet (2,200 meters), this tour is not recommended for guests with heart or respiratory problems. This evening you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a special performance of a well-known ballet (Giselle or Swan Lake), in one of the city’s theater venues. Dance is a huge part of the Russian’s nature. Dancing comes as natural to Russians, as singing comes natural to Italians. St. Petersburg has long been regarded as one of the world’s most famous ballet centers. For two centuries Russia has maintained its superiority in ballet, an art that was brought from Europe at the beginning of the 18th century. There was a period of adapting to this strange manner of dancing, which was initially shared with only a small segment of the population. After a long time of creating Russian ballet schools and theaters, with the help of Italian and French choreographers, coaches, artists, composers, dancers and ballerinas, the triumph of the Russian ballet was born at the beginning of the 20th century. After the show, your coach will be waiting to return you to your ship. *Price reflected on NCL.com is inclusive of the Pre-Book and Save offer. Note: Theater is not wheelchair accessible; there are stairs and no elevator. Photo and video recording is not allowed during the performance. This experience allows for an intimate glimpse inside one of the most important aspects that defines Costa Rica as the strongest nation in all of Central America. Coffee cultivation has been the primary source of income for many Costa Rican families since the turn of the 19th century. You’ll visit a 670-acre cooperative farm owned by more than 2,300 farmers of who 60% are women. Each member contributes almost 10 acres of land to the coop. The coffee that they cultivate and produce is sold directly to one of the largest coffee companies in the world, Starbucks. This coffee is also purchased by Rainforest Alliance, an organization that focuses on the conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development. You’ll experience first-hand the coffee roasting process and have the chance to sample the flavorful brewing. Also see how the coffee beans, also known as cherries, are picked, sorted, peeled, fermented and sun-dried. Learn many interesting facts that will change your appreciation for this highly consumed beverage. Feel free to browse the selection of hand-made souvenirs before heading to the town of Sarchi. A photo-stop will be made at the largest oxcart monument ever built and stop at the factory that made it; see the ancient water wheel that propels most of the machinery they use to cut and saw the wood. Note: Minimum amount of walking over even surface and some steps. For wheelchair restricted customers, advance notice is required. Motorized scooters cannot be handled, only foldable wheelchairs. Travel along the Campanian coastal route to Sorrento. As you make your way towards the Sorrentine Peninsula, enjoy the panoramic scenery of the Bay of Naples. Once in Sorrento, you’ll have approximately 1 1/2 hours on your own to explore, shop and eat in Sorrento's charming flowered-filled streets that offer a wide array of boutiques, souvenir shops, and outdoor cafes. (Please note that lunch is not included in this tour.) You’ll then take a local shuttle bus and drive to a local beach. Your escort will designate a meeting time and place and then you’ll be on your own for approximately 3 hours at the beach. You can use the changing rooms and will have the opportunity to relax on the beach, taste the cuisine of the local restaurant or have a cappuccino on the panoramic terrace. A complimentary sun-bed and beach umbrella will be provided for you. After a relaxing summer day on the Italian coastline, you’ll re-board the coach for the return drive to your ship in Naples. Note: The amount of walking is at guests' discretion. This tour does not include lunch or entrance fees. An escort will be on the coach to/from Naples to answer questions. Items such as hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, swimwear, proper foot protection and a towel should be brought with you from your ship. If guests should miss the return bus, transportation back to the vessel is your own responsibility and expense. Time in Sorrento and at the beach may be altered due to traffic. The transfer from Sorrento Town to the beach takes approximately 6-7 minutes each way and is operated by local shuttles buses so many guests will be standing. This is the only transportation authorized through the short, narrow street that connects the town and the beach. For this reason, depending on crowds and traffic involved, some waiting at the shuttle bus pick-up points may be expected. This tour is only available from mid-June to mid-September except for Norwegian Spirit August 3rd and August 15th 2013 sailings, and Norwegian Epic August 11th 2013 sailing. less

Whale watching in Iceland only started in 1995, but has had one of the highest growth rates in the world. Iceland has become the whale watch capital of northern Europe in less than 10 years. About half of the 36 whale species, which live in European waters, can be seen in Icelandic waters so the potential for whale watching in Iceland is excellent! Among the species of whales found in the waters surrounding the country are blue, fin, humpbacks, minke and sei whales. Note: Please bring warm clothes. Even though the weather in Reykjavik is good, it can be very cold and windy out on Faxafloi Bay. less

Located in the west part of Costa Rica’s Central Valley is the scenic town of Sarchi. It is considered the home of Costa Rica’s best craftsmanship. Here, more than a century ago, primitive local artists began painting and decorating their traditional oxcarts in intricate and colorful designs. These powerful vehicles, hauled by teams of oxen, soon became the primary means of transportation throughout the nation. You’ll see how the hand-painted Costa Rican oxcart art has evolved into a brilliantly executed form of native artistic expression. You can also find an immense variety of local wood products, ranging from elaborated hand-made furniture to hand-carved doors. Leather goods and all kinds of souvenirs will be available for purchase. Lastly, make a brief stop at the little town of Grecia, famous for its historical metal church, Cathedral de la Mercedes. The church is painted in a deep dark red color and has a gothic style; its metal pieces were imported from Belgium in the 1890’s. Note: Wear light clothing, walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen. less

This tour offers you an exciting opportunity to view St. Petersburg from a completely different angle. You’ll see the city from the water surrounding its numerous squares, monuments and palaces. Your coach will bring you to the pier in the city center, where you’ll start your fascinating journey through the rivers and canals of the ‘Venice of the North.’ The exact route of your trip will depend on the boat size and traffic conditions of the waterways. You’ll then disembark near the Cathedral on Spilled Blood, where you’ll continue with a tour of this remarkable building. The cathedral was built in 1907 on the spot where the Russian Tsar Alexander II had been assassinated in 1881. In a strikingly original way, the architect Parland incorporated all the features of old Russian churches, embellishing it in exuberant style with ornate decorations loosely modeled on St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow; the result was startling and beautiful. The area covered by mosaics is about 23,000 square feet, believed to be the largest indoor mosaic work in the world. The best painters, masters of mosaic stone carving, ceramic and enamel of the 19th-20th centuries, took part in the decoration of the church.
An outstanding feature of the interior decor is a variety of Italian colored marbles and Russian semi-precious stones. When built, the temple belonged to the Ministry of the Court and was open only a few times a year to a narrow circle of high society. Even so, the mosaic floor was covered with thick carpets. After the revolution of 1917 the church was granted to believers and a parish church opened there. Then the parish was closed and since then, the church served as storage for theatrical sets and scenery props. Restoration of the church started in 1974. It was a very painstaking job; some windows were missing, the floor was covered with water, a shell had damaged the roof of the cathedral during the war, and six square meters of mosaic decoration were destroyed. The restorers employed only the same type of materials and technology used when the cathedral was built, including 30 kinds of rare marble and about 100 types of precious stones. In August of 1997 the Cathedral of the Savior on Spilled Blood was opened to the public in all its original extraordinary appearance.

Note: Venues and boats are not wheelchair accessible. The Russian government charges a nominal fee to use your camera and video inside various palaces and museums of St. Petersburg. Fees are payable to your guide and exact change is required. The route of your trip will depend on the boat size and traffic conditions of the waterways. Expect congestion and waiting lines at attractions. Boat portion is subject to weather conditions.Tour order may vary. less

Nestled in the heart of the Sierra Madre Mountains, San Sebastian's remote location and historic appeal have made it one of Mexico's last great getaways. This former mining town is a world away from typical resorts and ordinary tourist attractions. Your San Sebastian land expedition begins with a 90-minute drive by air-conditioned van from Puerto Vallarta to the 17th century mining town of San Sebastián. As the road weaves through the mountains, you'll enjoy fantastic scenery and typical scenes of rural Mexican life, making the journey both breathtaking and relaxing. Enjoy a typical lunch before your walk through town. Once in San Sebastian, wander around in this very peaceful town, which has changed so little in hundreds of years. Come across a quaint cobblestone plaza lined by dignified white buildings, a classic Porfirian bandstand, an 18th century church dedicated to San Sebastián and many old world Haciendas. San Sebastián is a living museum untouched by time, and an experience that is difficult to surpass. Note: Bring comfortable shoes and clothing, insect repellent, sunscreen and cash. We recommend you bring a light sweater. less
