Experience Istanbul by land and sea. Begin with a cruise on the Bosphorus Strait on a local boat; you’ll delight in a mixture of past and present sites including unforgettable castles, towering minarets, and world-famous modern luxury hotels. Following your boat trip, continue to the Old City by bus to visit the Blue Mosque, at one end of Sultanahmet Square, designed by architect Mehmet Aga to rival Hagia Sofia at the opposite end of the square. This is one of the most famous religious buildings in the world. Its interior walls are adorned with beautiful blue green tiles, which give the mosque its most popular name. On one side of the square is the Hippodrome. Not much is left of it, just the Egyptian Obelisk, Serpentine and Constantine Columns. Continue your walk through this bustling square to reach the majestic Hagia Sophia, now a museum and the most important Byzantine monument in the world. The intricate mosaics that adorn its ceilings and walls are of immeasurable artistic and historic value. Next stop is the Grand Bazaar, composed of a covered traditional part and a modern open section. The covered section is a labyrinth of streets with more than 4,000 shops that sell anything you can imagine; from the most expensive art work, to the cheapest trinket, the grand Bazaar has it all. You’ll be fascinated by the exotic atmosphere. At the open modern section, you’ll find the best shops and most reliable shopping. It is here that you’ll participate in a presentation on the art of Turkish carpets while enjoying complimentary refreshments. You’ll have time to shop or browse at the handicraft store. A stop for lunch is scheduled during the tour to enjoy a Turkish style meal. Note: Expect differences in tour durations due to traffic conditions. Participants are required to remove their shoes in order to enter the mosque and are provided with an environmentally friendly bag to store them. As this tour visits a place of worship, please dress respectfully: no bare shoulders or exposed knees. Should the Blue Mosque be closed to visitors due to religious festivities, you’ll visit another historical mosque. On Sundays, the Grand Bazaar closes and only the shops of the outer bazaar remain open, therefore the visit to the Grand Bazaar may be replaced with the Spice Bazaar. The 'Gallery' section of St. Sophia is not included. There is approximately 1 mile of walking over uneven surfaces and some inclines and steps on this tour. A visit to the ancient city of Nora is a must for those who want to learn about the island’s centuries of occupation, admire Roman and Phoenician remains and the sparkling blue Mediterranean under the watchful eye of the 400 year old Spanish watchtower. Enjoy an orientation drive through Cagliari with a photo stop at Monte Urpino’s panoramic lookout point. Drive along the coast passing St. Gilla's lagoon, where if you’re lucky, you’ll see the pink flamingos and the salt flats. This pleasant drive follows the route taken by thousands of pilgrims every year as they follow Santo Efiso’s Cart.
Nora was founded by the Phoenicians. It had two harbors, one sheltered from the west winds and the other from the Mistral. The site has Carthaginian and Roman remains. After a period of Roman prosperity, there was a decline and in the 3rd Century AD the city was engulfed by the sea in a natural disaster. Admire the beautiful mosaics of the thermal baths, an amphitheater and small Roman Theater, as well as small houses and villas. Recently the forum, or agora, has been found, but a substantial part of the former town remains under the sea. It isn't hard to imagine ancient people living their lives so close to the blue waters of the Mediterranean. You’ll also see the outside of the little church where, every year, during the first days in May, important religious celebrations take place to commemorate St. Efisio. The church was built on the same site where the saint was martyred.

Today you’ll visit Pergamon, the intellectual center of Asia Minor, and an ancient healing center - Asclepion. Pergamon, a center of learning and arts possessed one of the greatest libraries of antiquity. Among the ruins lays an impressive amphitheater, the Temples of Trajan and Dionisus, the Altar of Zeus, the Sanctuary of Demeter, a three terrace gymnasium and the Agora. The next stop is Asclepion, located to the southwest of the lower city, which was a sanctuary dedicated to the god of health, Asclepios. This center was something very similar to a modern natural healing clinic where patients were given exercises, drugs, herbal remedies or the waters of the springs to drink. Galen, who first introduced the notion of experimentation to medicine, was among its famous physicians. You’ll make a stop for a shopping opportunity and refreshments. The tour will end with a drive to Izmir. Note: There is approximately 1 1/4 miles of walking over uneven and cobblestone surfaces with inclines and steps. During summer months, expect crowded venues and long lines as well as temperatures that can reach extreme highs. We recommend that you drink a lot of water, use suitable sun protection and dress in layers. Pompeii once supported a flourishing civilization that was revealed nearly intact after being buried for about 1,700 years. The once-prosperous commercial and political center with a population of 25,000 was hidden under 20 feet of volcanic ash and cinders during the fateful eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Originally a seaport, the eruption raised the land and left the ruined town far from the bay. You’ll enter Pompeii through the Sea Gate and walk along the cobblestone streets to the Agora. Surrounded by temples and porticoes, this was the religious, civic and business center of the city. Because Pompeii was so well preserved, you can see many fine details that reveal the lifestyles of the residents, such as mosaic floors and colorful frescoes in some of the homes. As you wander through this ancient city, you can’t help but notice the still-active Mount Vesuvius towering above. If time permits, you’ll visit a cameo factory nearby to see how the famous jewelry is made and then have some time to browse the store. Note: During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers and bring bottled water. Your first stop will be at a traditional Koum Kouat distillery. Afterwards, you’ll visit towns offering splendid views of the area’s multiple bays. Visit the Monastery of the Virgin and its small museum as well as the charming village of Lakones. Back in the main square of Corfu town, enjoy a walk through the picturesque streets, visit the church of Saint Spyridon and view other landmarks of the city. The island of Corfu offers serene beauty in its many colorful villages. On tour today, your first stop will be at a traditional Koum Kouat distillery. The Koum Kouat citrus fruit is a variety which only grows in Corfu and is used to make one of the island's most famous products - a liqueur with the same name, plus fruit-preserved sweets. You’ll be able to view a small exhibition of antique distillery equipment, sample the produce and purchase local liquors to take home. Afterwards, you’ll visit towns offering splendid views of the area’s multiple bays. You’ll also visit the Monastery of the Virgin and its small museum. Continue towards the charming village of Lakones, built on the slopes of a mountain. One of the sites that lay outside the village is called Bella Vista, and offers from its balconies breathtaking views of the Ionian Sea and the stunning Paleokastritsa with its coves and rocks, one of which is reputed to be the petrified ship of Ulysses. Here you’ll have the opportunity to taste the famous ouzo together with Greek appetizers. Afterwards, in the main square of Corfu town, enjoy a walk through the picturesque streets, visit the church of Saint Spyridon and view other landmarks of the city before returning to the pier. Upon arrival in Scalloway, the former Shetland capital, you’ll visit the castle, built in 1600 by the tyrant Earl Patrick Stewart using forced labor. It is four stories high and now roofless. Your next visit will be the nearby Scalloway Museum which houses a special "Shetland Bus" exhibition depicting the village's unique role in WWII operations. You’ll continue through the Tingwall Valley with its Norse heritage and arrive for a visit to the Gott Ponies. These were owned and bred by David Roberson, a Shetland pony enthusiast, breeding very good quality ponies. David or a member of his staff will be delighted to share their knowledge with you. Afterward, you’ll head northward through peat and heather covered landscapes. On the return journey to Lerwick, you may wish to take the opportunity to photograph one of the spectacular views of many of the islands that make up the Shetland’s archipelago. less

Drive through the picturesque marinas of Zea and Microlimano in Piraeus as your tour heads to the center of Athens. You’ll have the opportunity to admire some of the most important sites of Athens, such as Constitution Square, the Monument of the Unknown Soldier, Temple of Zeus, Royal Palace, and the Old Marble Olympic Stadium. The Acropolis is one of the most photographed and recognizable hills in the entire world. Sights include the Propylaea, Temple of Apteros Niki, Erectheum and Architectural Triumph of the Parthenon. Afterwards, you’ll have free time to wander around the picturesque streets of Plaka, the old preserved district of Athens with numerous art and craft shops, restaurants and cafes. You’ll have plenty of free time for shopping or to independently enjoy Greek specialties at one of the traditional colorful taverns. After your wanderings at the old district of Athens, board your coach from a designated point at a set-up time for your return to the pier. Note: The Acropolis is explored on foot and requires approximately two hours of walking. There are some 75 steps at the entrance and in certain locations the marble is uneven and slippery. During summer months and when there are many ships at the port of Piraeus, expect extreme overcrowding at the sites with possible waiting time to enter, especially at the Acropolis. Added to UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites in 1997 for being “the best preserved small Roman town in North Africa”, Dougga is an off- the-beaten track destination worthy of your exploration. Today, your long drive will be rewarded by the opportunity to explore this spectacular site. The Roman ruins occupy a commanding position on the edge of the Tebersouk Mountains, overlooking the fertile valley of the Oued Kalled. This site was occupied until the 1950’s, when the residents were relocated to help preserve the ruins. One of the monuments is a 3,500 seat theater, which was built into the hillside in 188 AD.
The Temple of Saturn was erected on the site of Temple Baal Hammon. A winding street leads to the square of the winds, where the paving depicts an enormous compass and lists the names of the 12 winds. The Capitol, raised in 166 AD is a remarkable monument and one of the finest in Tunisia. Six enormous, fluted columns support the portico, which stands some 25 feet/8m high. The frieze has a well preserved carving depicting the Emperor Antonius Pius being carried off in the claws of an eagle. Other important monuments are a Punic Libyan Mausoleum, triumphal arches, the baths and a number of temples.
Note: This tour is not suitable for guests using wheelchairs or with walking difficulties. There is a good amount of walking, approximately 2 hours on cobbled, uneven and rough Roman roads.

Combine two of the most famous Tuscan towns: Lucca, with a colorful history that stretches back to the days of the ancient Etruscans, and Pisa with its famous Field of Miracles with the cathedral, baptistery, and of course, the Leaning Tower. Arriving in Lucca, take a guided walk through the old town, which retains its Renaissance-vintage fortified walls. Stroll from piazza to piazza and learn the city’s history through its architecture. The Duomo, Lucca’s Romanesque cathedral dates from the 12th century and features a facade with elaborate relieves and columns. The Gothic interior features an image of Christ on the cross, supposedly carved by Nicodemus, a purported witness of the crucifixion. The Duomo also boasts Tintoretto's magnificent painting of the Last Supper. You’ll have free time in Lucca to enjoy your activity of choice; explore, eat or shop! Once a powerful maritime republic and a rival to Genoa and Venice, Pisa offers Renaissance splendor of its own. A short guided walk leads to the Field of Miracles where you’ll receive a brief orientation on Pisan history. The Piazza is the site of Pisa’s Duomo, baptistery, Campo Santo, and of course, the campanile – the famous Leaning Tower. Galileo is said to have used the 180-foot campanile during his experiments with gravity. Today, the tower leans 14-degrees from perpendicular. Recently reopened, admittance to the tower is limited and is not included in the excursion. Pisa’s Duomo is a mixture of Tuscan and Romanesque styles and the black and white interior marble arches are thought to have been inspired by Islamic architecture. You’ll have plenty of photo and shopping opportunities on this tour. Note: Should religious services be taking place in the Duomo, the guide will conduct an explanation outside and guests will be free to enter individually. Guests who are planning to visit religious sites during free time or on tour, please dress appropriately; no bare shoulders or shorts are allowed. You’ll meet your guide in Lucca for your visit there and your other guide in Pisa for your visit to Pisa, however you’ll have an escort with you throughout the day. In Pisa, you’ll have to walk to and from the bus parking area approximately 15 minutes each way. less

Take a short drive to the city center while your guide introduces you to the history of St. Petersburg. You’ll stop on the Spit of Vasilievsky Island for an opportunity to take in the views of the Neva River, the Rostral Columns, the Winter Palace and other buildings of the Hermitage Museum, as well as St. Peter and Paul Fortress, situated right across the river. The tour continues with a drive along the Neva River embankments, passing St. Peter and Paul Fortress. The tour will then take you to St. Isaac’s Cathedral for another photo opportunity and a tour of this remarkable building, one of the largest cathedrals in Europe and capable of accommodating 10,000 worshipers. The interior of the cathedral is richly decorated with different kinds of marble, malachite and other semiprecious stones. After, you’ll proceed to a dining venue for lunch.
In the afternoon your tour takes you outside of the city to the historical town of Pushkin. The drive will take you to the Egyptian Gates, the entrance to the Tsar’s Village. Catherine’s Palace in the Tsar’s Village ranks as one of the masterpieces of world art. From the time the palace was built until the time of the last Russian Tsar, Pushkin was used as the summer residence of the Royal Family. In 1756, Bartelomeo Rastrelli expanded Catherine’s Palace in Baroque style. The palace tour takes you through a series of magnificent rooms, including the famous Picture Gallery and, of course, the Great Hall. The parks of the estate add to the splendor of the palace, and several of them are embellished with a number of charming pavilions. The town of Pushkin is famous not only for its remarkable palace and parks, but the man it was named after. Since 1937, it has been named after Alexander Pushkin, the most celebrated poet in the country and a resident of this town at the beginning of the 19th century. The lyceum where he studied is connected to the palace by an arch.

In the morning your tour takes you outside of the city to the historical town of Pushkin. The drive will take you to the Egyptian Gates, the entrance to the Tsar’s Village in Pushkin. Catherine’s Palace in the Tsar’s Village ranks as one of the masterpieces of world art. Peter the Great presented the estate to his wife Catherine in 1710 and the architect Braunstein built a small palace here. From this time until the time of the last Russian Tsar, Pushkin was used as the summer residence of the Royal Family. In 1756, Bartelomeo Rastrelli expanded the palace in Baroque style. Its grandiose, white and gold facade stretches 978 feet. During World War II, the palace was damaged severely, but since then it has been restored and stands now in its original glory. The palace tour takes you through the series of magnificent rooms, including the famous Picture Gallery, the Great Hall and the world famous Amber Room.
The parks of the estate add to the splendor of the palace, and several of them are embellished with a number of charming pavilions. The town of Pushkin is famous not only for its remarkable palace and parks, but the man it was named after – Alexander Pushkin, the most celebrated poet in the country and a resident of this town at the beginning of the 19th century. The lyceum, where he studied, is connected to the palace by an arch. After the tour you’ll continue to one of the dining venues for lunch after which, you’ll drive back to the city for a tour of the Hermitage Museum, the largest art museum in Russia and the most prestigious museum in the world. The Hermitage Museum occupies the Winter Palace, the winter residence of the Russian Tsars, and four more buildings.
