Depart the pier and take a short walk across to the train station to board your exclusively chartered standard train for an approximate 3 to 3 1/2 hour journey from Warnemunde to Berlin. While relaxing and watching the German countryside pass by, you’ll be served a light breakfast snack. Upon arrival at one of Berlin’s train stations, your local Berlin tour guide will welcome and assist you to board your coach. Depart on an exciting tour of Berlin, covering the top 10 highlights of this bustling city. Photo stops will be made at the East Side Gallery, a 3/4 mile long section of the Berlin wall, Checkpoint Charlie and at the Bebelplatz where below the ground level lies the Empty Library. You’ll pass by the Potsdamer Platz, formerly a no man's land between East and West where the first gap in the Berlin Wall was made in 1989, and which is today a pristine block of futuristic glass-and-steel skyscrapers. A few blocks away from here, at the Holocaust Memorial, you’ll have another opportunity for a photo stop before making your way over to the famous Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag government building. Enjoy a traditional German pub style lunch before continuing your tour. Next, there's an an outside visit to the Charlottenburg Palace, the oldest surviving Prussian palace, and then drive into the former western part of Berlin, along the Kurfuerstendamm, where you’ll pass by the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial church and the largest department store on the continent of Europe, the KaDeWe. Continue passing Berlin’s main train station with more than 80 shops that are all open seven days a week. Also, see the Victory column commemorating the Prussian victories. Depending on the order of the tour and timing, you’ll have the opportunity to either spend some time at leisure at the Kurfuerstendamm, Friedrichstrasse or Berlin’s Main Train Station (or similar), before transferring to the station for your return journey back to Warnemunde. This perfect combination offers you a comprehensive understanding of what the south of this beautiful island has to offer. Stroll through the “Museum Village” of San Sperate, one of the most important agricultural centers of the island. The village was transformed into an outdoor museum when a local sculptor and muralist had the idea to paint the village walls white and invited several artists to paint their work on them. As you walk, admire the murals and sculptures that embellish this village and reach the studio and garden of the world famous sculptor Pinuccio Sciola. He had the idea for the Murales at San Sperate, but is better known for the sound stones that make music when brushed. During the Bronze Age, a special type of defensive structure known as nuraghi (for which no parallel exists anywhere in the world) developed on the island of Sardinia. The Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Grand Bazaar, Turkish food… all things that come to mind when you think of Istanbul. This tour is designed to cover the major highlights of Istanbul and maximize your time in this classical city. Visit one of the most recognized landmarks in the world, the Mosque of Sultan Ahmet, better known as the Blue Mosque because of the over 21,000 blue-green Iznik tiles used for its interior decoration. The six minarets and the layout of the domes and semi-domes create a unique exterior. Walk to the Hippodrome to see the remains of what was once the scene for political struggles and uprisings in the capital city of the Byzantine Empire. Continue your walk and visit Hagia Sophia, "Holy Church of Wisdom," now mostly referred to as St. Sophia Museum, a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture and considered as the 8th wonder of the world by most art historians. St. Sophia originated as a church in 360 AD and was later converted into a Mosque when the city was conquered by the Ottomans. Today, it’s considered as the most important Byzantine monument in the world. Another highlight of your tour is Topkapi Palace, a great walled complex hugging the shores of the Bosphorus and Golden Horn, once the residence of the Ottoman Sultans. The Treasury Section houses the 86-carat spoon maker diamond and an equally impressive emerald dagger. Another stop in your itinerary is the Grand Bazaar. The Bazaar is composed of two sections: the covered traditional part and the modern open section. The covered section is a whole quarter on its own and is surrounded by a wall which can be entered through several gates. The maze of streets and lanes are one of the greatest sights in the city, where various trades are segregated into different sections. You’ll have a chance to explore the exotic atmosphere of the covered part for a brief period of time. You’ll also visit the open and modern section which offers the best artworks and most reliable shopping. Here, you’ll see a presentation on the unique art of Turkish carpets and be given additional time to shop. Enjoy some complimentary refreshments while you shop and stroll in the handicraft store. A Turkish lunch is also part of your classical Istanbul experience. Note: This tour is not available for Norwegian Spirit's August 3, 2013 sailing. Not far from Mykonos lays the island of Delos, the 'island of light'. According to mythology, Zeus, the King of the Gods, fell in love with a beautiful Titaness named Leto, but when his wife discovered his infidelity, she forbade Mother Earth to give Leto refuge. Lonely and pregnant, Leto wandered the earth until the island appeared amid the waves so that she would have a place to give birth to twins: Artemis, goddess of the hunt and virginity, and Apollo, god of truth and light. Pilgrims from all over Greece came to pay their respects, creating one of the wealthiest and most revered shrines of antiquity. After reaching the island by chartered boat, you’ll discover among the ruins, one of the island’s most spectacular relics, the Avenue of the Lions, where perfect replicas of the 7th century Naxian marble beasts crouch in silent vigilance at the sacred lake where Leto gave birth to her twins. Beyond, a path leads to Mt. Kynthos, where Zeus observed the event. There are many other interesting monuments which you’ll be able to admire during your visit. Delos is explored on foot and the two-hour walk is over uneven terrain and the steps can be slippery. Start your morning with a visit to Pompeii. Here, a flourishing civilization, buried for 1,700 years under 20 feet of ash and pumice, was recovered so perfectly preserved that you can see how the 20,000 residents lived and loved, worked and played, ate and drank. En route, you’ll visit a cameo factory nearby to see how the famous jewelry is made and then have some time to browse the store. Visit the cliff-top town of Sorrento, a village with splendid views of the sea and the colorful marina below. Enjoy some free time to explore the flower-filled main street and the Corso Italia, lined with boutiques. Then it’s on to the hills above Sorrento, where a family-owned farm produces homemade products. Tour the farm and its old wine cantina, learn how they produce olive oil and homemade mozzarella, and during lunch get a chance to sample the local fare surrounded by a lemon and olive grove. In the shadow of the mighty Sierra Nevada lays Granada, a peculiar blend of Arab and European culture with a wealth of extraordinary monuments. Take in the views, as you travel north over the Malaga mountains and through the picturesque countryside. Visit the Alhambra, palace of the sultans and one of the finest examples of Moorish art in Spain. Six centuries of Moorish rule left an indelible mark on Spanish culture and architecture, especially in the south in Andalusia, where this palatial complex is one of the world’s great architectural wonders. The Alhambra has been damaged and restored over the centuries, but it’s not difficult to picture the place as it was, in all its glory 600 years ago. From floor to ceiling, every inch seems to be covered with some kind of pattern: geometric, floral or Arabic script. The ceilings drip with stucco stalactites and each room seems more richly decorated than the previous one, walls of wood filigree frame courtyards and fountains. Rose-colored walls stand in sharp contrast to the turquoise and black Pool of Myrtles and the garden is scented with jasmine and rose. Continue to the small summer palace along an avenue of stately cypress trees and venture into the Generalife Gardens, with trimmed flowerbeds and box hedges, myrtle bushes and above all, fountains. The view from the gardens is splendid. Enjoy a panoramic tour of the city making a photo stop at the Albaycin district. You’ll have free time to explore or to have lunch on your own. Start your tours with a drive along the Borgundfjord, through the modern suburbs to the old trading centre of Borgund. Here, visit the Sunnmøre Open-Air Museum where you’ll see various types of farmhouses and boathouses. This Museum houses a number of different old boats and the shipbuilding process were known to be the most reliable along the coast. You’ll also find copies of the so-called Kvalsund and Fjørtoft-boats from the year 700 A.D. Alongside lies the fishing vessel "HELAND" - better known as the Shetland bus as it was used to carry Norwegian partisans across the North Sea during World War II. Lastly, make a detour up on Mount Aksla to enjoy the magnificent view over the town and its surroundings before returning to your ship. Note: Guests must be able to walk approximately 600 yards over even surfaces with 2 to 3 steps to enter/exit the coach. Walking at the Sunnmøre Museum is at the guests' discretion. The Shetlands are a mosaic of over a hundred islands where land and water blend. The most northerly part of the British Isles, it is inhabited by approximately 22,000 people and an abundance of wildlife. It is a land shaped by the sea from dramatic sculptured cliffs to tranquil sandy bays. The delightful and inquisitive Shetland pony will come looking for food as your tour bus stops wherever possible for photos. The shaggy coats and flowing manes of the ponies equip them to withstand severe weather conditions; they have been in the Shetlands since at least Viking times. Then, travel south to visit Jarlshof. A violent storm in 1905 uncovered this remarkable archaeological site, revealing remains from the Stone Age and settlements from the Bronze and Iron Ages. The name Jarlshof, or "Laird's House", refers to the community of the Norse Jarls that resided here in the 7th century. You’ll be able to independently explore the remains of these village settlements, sprawled over a low green promontory by the sea. Your tour continues the short distance to the small historic village of Hoswick and a visit to the Hoswick Visitor Center. Here, you can have an understanding of the history and culture of the Shetlands from the interpretive displays and by watching the traditional knitting skills of the islanders. There is also the opportunity to purchase an original Shetland garment from the wide variety of cashmere or lamb wool items on sale in the knitwear shop. You’ll also see the small agricultural areas where sheep farming is important. Furthermore, see the distinctive black and brown Shetland sheep grazing in pastures enclosed by neat dry-stone walls, and small communities where peat is still used to heat homes. Your return to Lerwick will be across moorland. less

On your visit to Marseille, you’ll see the entrance of the old port guarded by the two fortresses: Saint John and Saint Nicolas. Drive to the Basilica Notre Dame de la Garde for a very interesting visit where you’ll discover the city of Marseille. In Avignon, city of art and culture, the metropolis of the Vaucluse region which spreads along the banks of the Rhone River, see the famous Pont d’Avignon with only four of its arches remaining. Avignon was a small but prosperous town when its destiny changed in the early 14th century with the exile of the Popes to France, leading to a century of brilliance. It is surrounded by ramparts and dominated by the Doms Rock which is crowned by the magnificent Cathedral and Palace of the Popes. Enjoy some free time for lunch and shopping on your own. Note: Tour involves walking for approximately 3 hours on uneven ground and cobblestone, with a few steps in Avignon. Driving time between Marseille and Avignon is approximately 1 1/2 hours long. In the morning your tour takes you outside of the city to the historical town of Pushkin. The drive will take you to the Egyptian Gates, the entrance to the Tsar’s Village in Pushkin. Catherine’s Palace in the Tsar’s Village ranks as one of the masterpieces of world art. Peter the Great presented the estate to his wife Catherine in 1710 and the architect Braunstein built a small palace here. From this time until the time of the last Russian Tsar, Pushkin was used as the summer residence of the Royal Family. In 1756, Bartelomeo Rastrelli expanded the palace in Baroque style. Its grandiose, white and gold facade stretches 978 feet. During World War II, the palace was damaged severely, but since then it has been restored and stands now in its original glory.

The palace tour takes you through the series of magnificent rooms, including the famous Picture Gallery, the Great Hall and the world-famous Amber Room. The parks of the estate add to the splendor of the palace, and several of them are embellished with a number of charming pavilions. The town of Pushkin is famous not only for its remarkable palace and parks, but the man it was named after – Alexander Pushkin, the most celebrated poet in the country and a resident of this town at the beginning of the 19th century. The lyceum, where he studied, is connected to the palace by an arch. After the tour you’ll continue to one of the dining venues for lunch after which, you’ll drive back to the city for a tour of the Hermitage Museum, the largest art museum in Russia and the most prestigious museum in the world. The Hermitage Museum occupies the Winter Palace, the winter residence of the Russian Tsars, and four more buildings.

This one-day visit gives you a sampling of the city's treasures, including a visit to the beautiful Basilica of Santa Croce, and an up-close look at the statue of David, magnificently carved by Michelangelo. As you approach Florence, you'll stop at the Piazza Michelangelo for an overview of the city's tiled roofs, steeples and domes. All the main attractions in Florence are centrally located and perfect for a walking tour. First, you'll visit the Galleria Dell'Accademia where you can see Michelangelo's famous Statue of David, and best of all, you’ll have a reserved time for entering so you won't have to stand in long lines! Spend your time experiencing Corfu’s most beautiful and renowned landmarks. Drive through the countryside dotted with lemon and olive trees, to reach the charming village of Gastouri where the Achilleion Palace stands. It was built by the Empress Elizabeth of Austria in 1891 and was recently renovated. Its beautiful gardens, full of exotic flowers and the imposing figure of Achilles dominating the center, offer magnificent views of the Ionian Sea. Continue driving along the coastal road of Perama, where you’ll stop to take photographs of the famous views of Mouse Island before returning to Corfu town. Leave your coach in the Esplanade, the main square of the town, for a walk through the picturesque streets of the Old town. Here you’ll view historical sights such as the residence of the British High Commissioner, the Venetian quarters of Cambiello and Corfu’s historical center, the Town Hall and the Church of Saint Spyridon, Patron Saint of Corfu. At the end of the tour you can either board your coach to return to your ship, or remain in the city a bit longer and return to your ship later on your own. Your panoramic tour of Berlin will include passing by Bebel Platz, where below the ground level lies the Empty Library; remnants of the Berlin Wall; the famous former border crossing, Checkpoint Charlie; the Brandenburg Gate, which more than any other monument symbolizes the German and European reunification; the Reichstag government building; Berlin’s Protestant cathedral with its Neo-Baroque interior and massive dome; Haeckesche Hoefe, a building complex built by Jewish idealists in 1906-07 with elegant ceramic facades, and which today symbolizes Berlin’s new center having miraculously survived two wars; and the New Synagogue, Berlin’s most prominent Jewish landmark. Stop at the Holocaust Memorial, the ‘Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe’, which is a central place for remembrance to the murdered victims and a place of warning. After lunch at a traditional German pub-style restaurant, start the second part of your tour heading for the infinitely more somber and one of the most chilling destinations, the former Nazi Concentration Camp at Sachsenhausen, a memorial just north of Berlin. About 6,000 Jews were forcibly brought here after Kristallnacht alone, and it was here that some of the first experiments in organized mass murder were made. The scale of the terror remembered here can be very disturbing, however, simply by visiting here you can help change the future; as Winston Churchill put it, "the further backward you can look, the further forward you are likely to see." Return to the Berlin train station for your journey to Warnemunde. Note: The museums, archive and library are closed on Mondays, but the open-air exhibition “Murder and Massmurder in Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp”, “The Station Z” as well as the information center remain open. Enjoy an overview of this legendary city’s best-known attractions, including buildings of Mudejar and Gothic architecture, lovely parks and the bullring. Departing the port, your sightseeing drive will take you along Alameda Boulevard en route to the hilltop location of Gibralfaro. As you walk along the ramparts crowning the 560-feet-high summit, admire splendid views over the city, the harbor and the bullring. Then your coach will take you back down to the Plaza de la Merced for a short walk to the Alcazaba. At the foot of this ancient fortress, view the excavated ruins of a Roman amphitheater. The restored Alcazaba dates back to the 11th century when the king of Granada ordered the fortress built and modeled on the style of the Alhambra. After the Christian conquest, the Catholic kings took over the Alcazaba and King Philip IV used it as his residence when visiting Malaga. Leaving the Alcazaba, your walk continues to the cathedral. You’ll admire its fabulous interior, the exquisitely carved choir stalls and other fine examples of Spanish Renaissance sculpture. Note: This tour involves approximately two miles (1,200 meters) of walking on uneven ground, as well as many steps at both the Gibralfaro Castle and the Alcazaba. Enjoy some of Santorini’s highlights when you visit a winery and the beautiful village of Oia. Your first stop will be at one of the island’s wineries where you’ll taste some of the best wines in Santorini, renowned for their quality. From here, you’ll continue to Oia situated on top of an impressive cliff, offering unrivaled spectacular views over the Aegean. This traditional village offers charming houses and quaint narrow streets, blue domed churches, sun-bathed verandas and, plenty of shops, taverns and cafes. Many artists have fallen in love with this idyllic setting and their presence is obvious in the many art galleries. After arriving in the village, you leave your coach for a stroll around the narrow streets with its old beautiful houses and the tiny picturesque shops. Note: Tour involves walking for approximately 1/2 mile on level, some steps and cobblestone streets. Amount of walking and exertion during free time is up to you. Your coach will take you inland, passing through Sao Martinho to the Socorridos ravine. Eira do Serrado is reached after a short drive along a winding road, offering spectacular views of the interior of the island. Here, it is a short and easy walk up to the viewpoint on Pico de Serrado at an altitude of approximately 3,592 feet (1,094 meters), for an amazing view down onto the village of Curral das Freiras. Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley) is a small village nestling between almost perpendicular mountains in the heart of the island. In 1566, the nuns from the Santa Clara convent fled from pirates attacking Funchal and found seclusion here where they also brought the convent’s treasure. Your next stop will be at Monte. This small village, perched up in the hills overlooking Funchal, was formerly a health resort for Europe's high society, including Austrian Emperor Charles I. One of its long-lost features was a rack railway, which connected Monte with Funchal. From here you will board the cable car and see Madeira from the air, experiencing the wonderful views all the way down to Funchal. The cable car is made up of 40 small cabins with a capacity of up to eight people per cabin and it has an approximate duration of 15 minutes. Your last stop will be at an important wine lodge, where a sample of the famous Madeira wine will be offered. Note: A jacket is recommended as Madeira has a microclimate. This tour involves approximately 3/4-mile of walking (5 to 10 minutes) on cobblestones and uneven surfaces with approximately five steps to get to the viewpoint at Eira Do Serrado; approximately 10 steps at Monte and five to eight steps at the Madeira Wine Company. Cable car is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties as access is similar to a ski lift; i.e. cable car does not stop for boarding, rather it moves slowly. Enjoy a drive to the southern part of Lanzarote, passing the picturesque villages of Macher and Uga and crossing black lava streams before arriving to the southwest coast of the island. There you’ll make a photo stop by Los Hervideros where the sea water seems to boil in a volcanic cave. On your way to the Timanfaya National Park, you’ll stop for a short camel ride. The park is a natural museum of unique beauty. Bizarre craters, streams of lava and fields of ashes formed by eruptions during the 18th century are mixed here in a nearly unrealistic lunar landscape. Upon arrival to Islote de Hilario, a crater with the highest surface temperatures in the region, you’ll experience still-existing activity not far underground as you gather around for the fun demonstrations. The geothermal energy is so strong that water gushes up and dry weed catches fire within seconds. Board a coach to embark on a tour of the Fire Mountains called the "Lunar Route”, which goes deep inside the heart of the national park and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Through a recorded narration, you’ll learn about the history of the volcanic eruptions and see how slowly life conquers the inhospitable landscape with very few endemic plants. From here you’ll drive to the wine-growing area of La Geria where the locals have modified grape growing through the centuries in order to preserve the vines from the harsh natural elements and provide a special cultivation for the grapes that produce the famous Malvasia wine. These vines are grown inside dimple-like craters and surrounded by volcanic stone semi-circles (called Zocos), built for each individual vine to provide much needed protection from the fierce winds. Visit one of the local wine cellars for a taste of the local wine before the return drive to your ship. Note: Because Fire Mountains is the most visited attraction, to avoid delays at the entrance, tour order may vary but all mentioned sites will be covered. No professional camera or video equipment is allowed at Timanfaya National Park, including the camel area. Comfortable shoes and a light jacket are recommended. less

Begin your tour by sightseeing boat and pass by Suomenlinna, a series of small interconnected islands near Helsinki that are popular with area residents because of their museums, parks and gardens. First, visit Alesund’s attractive setting, built on three islands with the spectacular Sunnmore Alps in the background. Pass by Borgundfjord, with charming suburbs and well-kept gardens. Head over to the municipality of Stordal, famous for its furniture factories, a very important export article in this region. Reach to the fertile valley of Valldal, where strawberry cultivation is very common; ascend up the valley to Trollstigen, reaching 850 meters above sea level. Start the descent down the Trolls' Path with its daring hairpin bends. Down in the valley make a photo stop to take in the lovely waterfall called Stigfossen waterfall cascading down the mountainside.

Next, detour up to Trollveggen; here, you’ll find the Troll Wall with the highest perpendicular rock face in Europe. Climbers from all parts of the world come visit this 1,000-meter tall wall to try out the various routes to the top. Then, pass by Romsdalsfjord with its many small villages known for its ship and boat building. Before returning to your ship, cross over the Orskog mountain plateau, a popular skiing area for the people in Alesund.

Leaving the ship take a drive by coach over the new panoramic road to a viewpoint from where you can see the magnificent view of Dubrovnik and its Riviera. After the panoramic stop, you’ll drive toward the picturesque seaside resort town of Cavtat, which was the Ancient Roman City of Epidaurus. Over the years Cavtat has been a favorite destination for sailors and yacht enthusiasts, in fact Edward VIII and Wallace Simpson came here during their honeymoons. In Cavtat you’ll have opportunity for a pleasant walk along the sea front promenade or have a coffee in one of many cafes located along the coast. From Cavtat, you’ll drive along the eastern coast of the Dubrovnik Riviera toward Komaji Village to visit a winery. Upon arrival, proceed to the Crvik family vineyards. The owner of the winery will greet you on arrival and give you a presentation about his wines and will show you the production process. He’ll even invite you to participate in a tasting of his vintage wines. Following the tasting, you’ll re-board your coach and depart for Dubrovnik. Founded in the mid-7th century by Greek refugees from Epidaurus, Dubrovnik became the most important city-state on the Adriatic. The Old Town is unique for its marble-paved squares, cobbled streets, tall houses, churches, palaces, fountains, and museums, all built from the same light-colored stone. Along the way, you’ll visit the Dominican Monastery, inside where you’ll discover the finest collection of Renaissance paintings in Dubrovnik. This evening, you’ll have the unique opportunity to visit St. Mark’s Basilica after the crowds have left and it closes to the public. Unlike daytime visits, this exclusive opening of the basilica lets you admire this magnificent structure when it turns silent, just listening to the narration of your guide. A motor launch ride down the Giudecca Canal takes you to Riva degli Schiavoni, a short walk from the square. You’ll meet your guide in St. Marks’s Square, the heart of Venice and meeting place, living room and promenade for both Venetians and visitors. The church was built on the plan of a Greek cross in Byzantine style. The beautiful facade shows different architectural styles with gold mosaic arches rising above the carved, Romanesque portal; the rooftop is crowned with five domes, reminiscent of Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. Showcased in the center are the four bronze horses brought from Byzantium in 1204. The inside is rich in mosaics, with many of them dating back to Byzantium. St. Mark's Basilica houses other extraordinary treasures, the finest being the gold altar screen, encrusted with more than 1,000 jewels and Byzantine enamels. Along this subtropical coast grow sugar cane, avocado and custard trees. Some 35 miles from Malaga is Nerja, which counts many retired Britons among its residents. The historic center, which begins in the Balcony of Europe, dates from around 1487. Its 9th century castle is today a perfect view point above the sea. To the side of the balcony, you’ll find the 17th century Savior Church, constructed in Baroque-Mudejar style and the 16th century Our Lady of Sorrows Hermitage with its paintings by the master Alonso Cano. In the old quarter of town, typical small shops offer local handicrafts and local products such as sweet wine, olive oil, honey and tropical fruits. After a walk through the city, you’ll continue to the famous Caves of Nerja. Millions of years old, these breathtaking beautiful caves, should not be missed. Your surroundings get more fascinating as you descend deeper into the bowels of the earth. In its interior you’ll gaze in awe the largest stalagmites columns in the world, 161 feet high and 59 feet in diameter. Their capricious rocky formations can be compared to Modernist cathedrals, and their eight rooms include the Room of the Cataclysm, as well as the Room of the Cascade. Every year in August the Festivals of Music and Dance take place here. Your day of discovery begins when you board you air conditioned transportation. You’ll pass by buildings and homes featuring Colonial, Republican and Moorish styles and your guide explains the many influences that came to be in Cartagena. Your first stop will be 'Punta Icacos', near the fishing village of La Boquilla. Here, you’ll be greeted by local fishermen who earn a living by traditional means of fishing. These fishermen will explain the process of making, repairing and casting the nets, as well as provide a demonstration. You’ll even have the opportunity to learn the art of throwing the net if you wish or you can also sip on fresh coconut milk or coconut water while you watch your companions cast the net. On your way back to Cartagena your guide will provide you with more information regarding Columbian history including the "Vallenato". The Vallenato is a traditional type of music typically using an accordion, flute and drum. Next, stop at Rancho Grande where you’ll be greeted and entertained by your own band of Vallenato. Sample a traditional Columbian snack or "frito" if you whish before making your way to the Emerald Museum. Here, you’ll see craftsmen at work as well as learn the history and cultural importance of the precious stone. Then, visit the famous walled or Old City and Portal de Dulce, an area where local vendors sell the handmade Columbian candies, famous around the world. Take a sweet sample before continuing your walk through the Plaza de la Aduana and Simon Bolivar Square. The small fishing village of Katakolon is the gateway to the mystical site of Ancient Olympia, some 25 miles to the east. Visit the remarkable site of Olympia where the first Olympiad was held. Its setting could not be more idyllic: in the middle of a fertile valley with the rivers of Alphios and Kladhios flowing past. The site was a sanctuary even before the stadium was built and the games took place in the sacred area called Altis. The most imposing monument in this area was the outstanding Temple of Zeus one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Nowadays there exists only the ruins of the temple and the statue has disappeared, its traces lost in the ages. The Temple of Hera, the Prytaneion and the Philippeion were also monuments standing in the sacred grove. The famous Stadium, the largest of its day, is entered through a long, tunnel-like passage constructed in Roman times. Continue to the Archaeological Museum, a five-minute walk from the site. Among the great finds of the area that are displayed here are the Head of Hera and the superb statue of Hermes of Praxiteles. In addition you’ll be able to admire ornaments from the Temple of Zeus, and many other priceless pieces. less

The Shetlands, located 112 miles from the most northerly point to the southern tip, is the cross-roads of the northern seas, and unlike anywhere else in Scotland. They roll out in a long vista of moor and wiry pasture, penetrated by great sea inlets. Spectacular vertical stacks coated with seabird colonies, cliffs and coves curtained with wild-flowers; hidden white beaches on an endless coast, small crofts and settlements sheltering by the sea-edge. As you come ashore, you’ll notice the main town of Lerwick, with its narrow Main Street and small shops. Climbing out of Lerwick, the road travels south and you’ll soon be seeing the vistas of hillsides. Turn off the main road to travel through small agricultural areas where sheep farming is important. You’ll see the distinctive black and brown Shetland sheep grazing in pastures enclosed by neat dry-stone walls, the product of local quarries. You’ll also travel across heather-lad hills to Burra Isle and to Scalloway, the former capital of the Shetlands. See Scalloway Castle, a forbidding ruin dominating the town, built by Earl Patrick Stewart in 1600 using forced local labor. Stewart was the notorious despot who tyrannized Orkney and the Shetlands, where he extorted crushing taxes and fines from the people of the Shetlands. His cruelty eventually led to his downfall and, in 1615, he and his son were executed in Edinburgh. Built in Medieval style, the roofless shell, with corner turrets and gables, stands on a narrow promontory by the water. Today, it stands side by side with the commerce of a busy fishing port, a silent sentinel. Your tour route then heads towards the fertile Tingwall Valley. The road passes a collection of farm buildings, and then suddenly there are belts of trees, rising abruptly amongst the barren hills. From the comparatively tranquil landscapes of the Tingwall Valley, you’ll head towards Weisdale Voe where the landscape changes dramatically. Here you'll pay a visit to the small workshops of Shetland jewelers which manufacture a range of silver and gold jewelry featuring Celtic, Viking and local wildlife designs. The 15 (of the original 34) columns of the Doric Order that are still standing belong to the temple built here during the Golden Age of Perikles' Athens, over the relics of an older one.
