Europe’s largest active volcano and man made works of art are available for you to enjoy this morning. Start with a short orientation drive through Messina, passing by Piazza Duomo with the Cathedral and its astronomic clock, Corso Cavour and Via Boccetta, as you head to Mount Etna, 62 miles away. Enjoy the views of the coast before reaching the scenic road which winds around the slopes of the mountain, passing the town of Giarre and the villages of Santa Venerina and Zafferana. Mount Etna, Sicily's greatest natural attraction is also its highest mountain, soaring to over 10,800 feet; a volcano that has been active for over 2,500,000 years. It covers an area of approximately 600 square miles, with a circumference of about 93 miles at its base, and its flanks are covered with cones and craters. You’ll stop at Cratere Silvestri, at about 6,397 feet above sea level. From here you can gaze out across the Catania Gulf and see the woods, orchards and vineyards from this vantage point. But of course the major attraction is the crater and the remnants of the awe inspiring streams of lava. Leaving Mount Etna, you’ll continue to the town of Giarre, to visit GI VAL’s historic jewelry workshop, located in an exquisitely decorated mansion set among beautifully landscaped gardens. Your gracious hosts will treat you to tasty Sicilian specialties and refreshments before you head down to the workshop to see how expert goldsmiths and jewelry makers create unique pieces of jewelry. A visit to the exhibition room allows you time to shop before heading back to Messina. Note: The uphill walk is approximately 650 feet from the coach parking to the crater area. We recommend you bring a windbreaker or light jacket as it can be windy and chilly at the top of the volcano. less

For the most adventurous, this is the perfect tour to correlate the disastrous eruption of Vesuvius and the destruction of the splendid city of Pompeii. Visit the famous city destroyed by a volcanic eruption and learn how its inhabitants lived. Learn how prior to the eruption of Vesuvius, Pompeii was a thriving city, teeming with privileged rich people and ordinary slaves. See their homes and places of work during the days of the Roman Empire. The city was prosperous due to the region’s fertile soil. Hike up to the volcano’s crater and see the rivers of lava where crevices still exude fumes and heat. Vesuvius has erupted many times, but the eruption that stays in the mind of millions of people is the one in 79 A.D. Take in stunning views of Naples and the bay from the top. Time permitting, you’ll visit a cameo factory near Pompeii. Note: The tour will not operate for Norwegian Jade winter sailings from the end of November through mid-April. The steep gravel path to the crater is about 550 yards and takes approximately 40 minutes to walk round-trip. This tour is not recommended for guests with a history of heart disease or high blood pressure and does not include lunch. Guests should bring along local currency to purchase a snack outside of Pompeii. During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers and bring bottled water. In the event of bad weather and the closure of Mt. Vesuvius crater, an orientation drive of Naples will be done instead. less

Begin with a scenic drive through the main sights of Helsinki towards the picturesque town of Porvoo; the second-oldest town in Finland and a favorite of poets and artists. Porvoo was an important trading center as early as the Middle Ages. Enjoy a walking tour along its cobblestone streets lined with 16th century wooden houses. Browse in the handicraft shops before you continue to Savijarvi Mansion, a private home where the family shows you around and treats you as a personal guest. Your hosts will serve coffee and cakes along with an assortment of Finnish berries and caramel sauce. Sit on the terrace or indoors, depending on the weather, and you’ll be able to see the riding horses and breeding farm. On the return trip to Helsinki, you’ll stop briefly in Sipoo for a visit to its 15th century church. At the end of the tour, you can get off in the downtown area to explore the city on your own or return by your bus to the cruise pier. Should you decide to remain in the city, you’ll be responsible for your own return to the cruise pier. Note: Order of sights might vary. Tour participation is limited. Guides are not allowed to escort large groups through churches while service is in progress. In this instance the guide will describe the church from the outside. We cannot guarantee entry if services are being held. Sipoo Old Church is closed on Sundays. less

Immerse yourself in nature during a trekking adventure to Ichkeul National Park; one of the most important areas of migrating birds and home to Lake Ichkeul, the last great freshwater lake of a chain that once stretched the length of North Africa. Ichkeul is situated on the Mateur plain. The area was designated as a biosphere reserve in 1977. The park contains the largest freshwater area in the country and the most important water supply for Tunisia.
Its semi-arid flora encompasses about 400 species of pan Mediterranean plants. Different habitats form this natural preserve, such as mountain, foothills, fresh water marshes and lake with its reed beds. Follow your guide into the park and during your walk, you may discover various animals that roam freely in the reserve. Switching from nature to ancient history, you’ll drive to the Roman ruins and museum at Utica. This old Phoenician settlement was founded around 1100 BC and contains Roman and Punic ruins. The remains of several houses reveal decorative flooring dating back to Phoenician, Roman and Byzantine times. The museum displays mosaic floors from the same periods.
Note: This tour is not suitable for guests using wheelchairs or with walking difficulties. There is extensive walking, approximately 3 hours on uneven terrain, cobbled and rough Roman roads. Sightings of wildlife are likely, but not guaranteed.

On this tour, you’ll travel in a small group by minibus to visit Ephesus, one of the most interesting and extensive ancient cities in the world, and also visit the impressive Terrace Houses. Upon reaching the once powerful city, passing by the Magnesia Gate, you’ll enter the administrative section of ancient Ephesus. On your guided walking tour you’ll see the Odeon, the Fountain of Trajan, the five terraces of the apartment houses, the Steam Baths of Scholastika, the Temple of Hadrian and the impressive Library of Celsius, which is adorned with columns and statues. The Grand Theater is the largest theater in antiquity and has a capacity of 24,000 seats. Mark Anthony and Cleopatra once rode in procession through the Arcadian Way, and today you’ll proceed this way when you return to your bus. On the slopes of Bulbul Mountain opposite the Hadrian Temple, you’ll visit Terrace Houses of Ephesus, also called 'the houses of the rich' because they were for the important and wealthy people of Ephesus. You’ll get an extra ticket to visit the inner sections of these houses where excavations still continue. The most ancient of the houses were built in the 1st century B.C. and most of the houses were restored in the 2nd century A.D. The houses seemed plain from outside, but inside were decorated with mosaics and frescoes. Following your visit of Ephesus, you’ll be welcomed to enjoy a 'Roman feast' where Romans and Ephesians will be happy to greet you and share with you their goat cheese and wine. Here you’ll also have a chance to enjoy the colorful panorama and the venue which has been converted to a handicrafts center. Note: There is approximately 1 3/4 miles of walking over uneven and cobblestone surfaces with inclines and steps. During summer months, expect crowded venues and long lines as well as temperatures that can reach extreme highs. We recommend that you drink a lot of water, use suitable sun protection and dress in layers. Guests who are planning to visit religious sites during free time or on tour, please dress appropriately; no bare shoulders or shorts are allowed. less

Built high up on the ridge of red rocks it offers breathtaking views of the blue Aegean. Following your visit to Oia, you'll proceed to the famous village of Imerovigli, where at a local restaurant you’ll enjoy a Greek style dinner while looking at breathtaking views of the caldera and the volcano.
