The Shetlands, located 112 miles from the most northerly point to the southern tip, is the cross-roads of the northern seas, and unlike anywhere else in Scotland. They roll out in a long vista of moor and wiry pasture, penetrated by great sea inlets. Spectacular vertical stacks coated with seabird colonies, cliffs and coves curtained with wild-flowers; hidden white beaches on an endless coast, small crofts and settlements sheltering by the sea-edge. As you come ashore, you’ll notice the main town of Lerwick, with its narrow Main Street and small shops. Climbing out of Lerwick, the road travels south and you’ll soon be seeing the vistas of hillsides. Turn off the main road to travel through small agricultural areas where sheep farming is important. You’ll see the distinctive black and brown Shetland sheep grazing in pastures enclosed by neat dry-stone walls, the product of local quarries. You’ll also travel across heather-lad hills to Burra Isle and to Scalloway, the former capital of the Shetlands. See Scalloway Castle, a forbidding ruin dominating the town, built by Earl Patrick Stewart in 1600 using forced local labor. Stewart was the notorious despot who tyrannized Orkney and the Shetlands, where he extorted crushing taxes and fines from the people of the Shetlands. His cruelty eventually led to his downfall and, in 1615, he and his son were executed in Edinburgh. Built in Medieval style, the roofless shell, with corner turrets and gables, stands on a narrow promontory by the water. Today, it stands side by side with the commerce of a busy fishing port, a silent sentinel. Your tour route then heads towards the fertile Tingwall Valley. The road passes a collection of farm buildings, and then suddenly there are belts of trees, rising abruptly amongst the barren hills. From the comparatively tranquil landscapes of the Tingwall Valley, you’ll head towards Weisdale Voe where the landscape changes dramatically. Here you'll pay a visit to the small workshops of Shetland jewelers which manufacture a range of silver and gold jewelry featuring Celtic, Viking and local wildlife designs. The showroom also stocks a selection of local crafts. The excursion itinerary then takes to the eastern side of mainland Shetland and returns towards Lerwick. less

The State Hermitage is a museum of art and culture, one of the largest and oldest in the world. It was founded by Catherine the Great in 1764. Its collections, of which only a small part is on the permanent display, comprise nearly three million items. Today the Hermitage museum encompasses buildings on the Palace Embankment and its neighborhoods. The Hermitage Museum occupies the Winter Palace – the winter residence of the Russian Tsars, and four more buildings: the Little Hermitage – Catherine’s original collection – the Old Hermitage; the Hermitage Theater – Catherine’s private theater – and the New Hermitage. Catherine started her art collection in 1764 by purchasing paintings. Her collection consisted of Rembrandt, Rubens, Titian, Antoine van Dyck, Rafael and others.
In her lifetime Catherine's acquired paintings from old masters, books, engraved gems, drawings, coins and medals and a natural history collection. Later Russian emperors continued to expand the collection and in 1852 the Hermitage was opened to the public. Immediately after the Revolution of 1917 the Imperial Hermitage and the Winter Palace were proclaimed state museums. The range of the Hermitage exhibits was further expanded when private art collections from several palaces of the Russian Tsars and numerous private mansions were being nationalized.

Alesund, the largest town on the Northwest coast, has a beautiful setting, built on several islands stretching out into the ocean. You will drive to the Atlantic Ocean Park, a unique aquarium in Norway. Here, the tanks are built to resemble the coastal environments and its largest tank contains 4 million liters of seawater. You can even view the marine life through an acryl panel that is 26,5 cm thick, 18 m long and 4 m high. The Atlantic Ocean Park also features an out-door pool with penguins; here, you can look straight out towards "Breisundet" - the wide sound surrounded by islands and far out the open ocean. You’ll see seals coming regularly to be fed! On the way back we have the opportunity to study some of the fine details of the "art nouveau" architecture before we head up to Mount Aksla. Here we make a stop to take in the spectacular view towards the ocean and the many islands spread out. After a short drive through the streets of Ålesund we are back at the pier. A drive to the southern part of the Lanzarote will take you past the picturesque villages of Macher and Uga and cross black lava streams before arriving at the southwest coast of the island, passing by Los Hervideros where the sea water seems to boil in a volcanic cave. After a brief photo stop and a short drive, you’ll reach the Timanfaya National Park, a natural museum of unique beauty. Bizarre craters, streams of lava, and fields of ashes are mixed here with a nearly unrealistic lunar landscape, all formed during the last eruption in the 18th century. Upon arrival to Islote de Hilario, a crater with the highest surface temperatures in the region, you’ll experience still-existing activity not far underground as you gather around for the fun demonstrations. The geothermal energy is so strong that water gushes up and dry weed catches fire within seconds. At the restaurant El Diablo, located at the top of the hill, food is cooked on a natural grill powered by the heat within the earth below. Board a coach to embark on a tour of the Fire Mountains called "Lunar Route" which goes deep inside the heart of the National Park and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Through a recorded narration, you’ll learn about the history of the volcanic eruptions and see how slowly life conquers the inhospitable landscape with very few endemic plants. From here you’ll drive to the wine-growing area of La Geria where the locals have modified grape-growing through the centuries in order to preserve the vines from the harsh natural elements and provide a special cultivation for the grapes that produce the famous Malvasia wine. These vines are grown inside dimple-like craters and surrounded by volcanic stone semi-circles (called Zocos), built for each individual vine to provide much needed protection from the fierce winds. After this photo stop you’ll return to your ship. Note: Because Fire Mountains is the most visited attraction, to avoid delays at the entrance, tour order may vary but all mentioned sites will be covered. No professional camera or video equipment is allowed at Timanfaya National Park, including the camel area. Comfortable shoes and a light jacket are recommended. less

Mainly a fishing village, Herculaneum was most appreciated for its position overlooking the Bay of Naples. It became very rich as it was chosen as a summer resort by wealthy Romans who built wonderful villas adorned with frescoes, mosaics and great sculptures. There’s a feeling about Herculaneum that’s quite different from what one feels in other ancient world centers brought to light so far, including Pompeii. The torrent of mud flooding down from the volcano served for centuries as the best possible defense against atmospheric agents and illegal excavators. See the houses, shops, and baths, including wooden elements, foodstuffs and fabrics that are preserved intact, thus offering a unique vision of their lives long ago. At first sight you’ll see that Barcelona is a city with charming streets, busy with people and full of life. The old town districts are famed for their historical monuments, narrow streets and Bohemian atmosphere, and are a perfect place for a stroll. The city also has the biggest selection of modernist architecture, making it a genuine open-air museum. Barcelona is the only European capital with almost three miles of beaches where you can enjoy the most modern amenities. From the pier, head to the Sagrada Familia, passing through the Barceloneta Quarter or Fisherman Area, and Calle Marina. Your guide will offer you an explanation of all the details related to the church. Continue with a panoramic drive along Passeig de Gracia, the best-known boulevard in town. See one of the masterpieces of Gaudi’s architecture: the Casa Mila, best known by Barcelonians as ‘La Pedrera’ and Casa Batllo. Reaching Diagonal Avenue, enter the upper Eixample Area where the Sagrada Familia church is. After this, continue to the Montjuic Hill, claimed by the city on the occasion of the 1929 International Exposition, when the mountain was developed and trade fair halls and sports installations were constructed, as well as the parks and gardens which are to be found all over the mountain. Today it is the most important recreational area in Barcelona. Drive by the Olympic Ring and make a brief stop at the Mirador del Alcalde for a panoramic view of the city. Finally, arrive at the Gothic Quarter for a walking visit. The facade of the cathedral and octagonal dome are Neo-Gothic structures of the 19th century, designed according to a 15th-century drawing. Drive through the lovely Tuscan countryside en route to the historic town of Pisa, located on the banks of the Arno River. Enjoy a short trolley ride that takes you directly to Miracle Square, next to the famous Leaning Tower. During World War II, much of Pisa was destroyed by German and Allied bombing, however the cathedral, baptistery and famous leaning tower escaped unharmed. Arriving at the Field of Miracles, you’ll join your guide for a climb up the 294 steps to discover the world-famous Leaning Tower. Built to display the wealth of Pisa, the bell tower began leaning during construction because of the foundation settling unevenly as builders reached the fourth story. The builders compensated for the angle but the tower continued its tilt. Today, the tower leans 14 degrees from perpendicular. Continue down to the open-air square for a brief explanation of the Cathedral and the Baptistery. You’ll have some free time to browse for souvenirs and gifts at the many stalls lining the walk to the Field of Miracles. Note: Participants must be at least 8 years of age to climb the Tower. No bags are allowed for the Tower visit for security reasons. Even though the tower has reopened to the public, Italian authorities have strict limitations on the amount of persons allowed in per hour/day, and time limitations make it impossible to offer the visit to all the guests at the same time. The walking distance between the Field of Miracles in Pisa, and the bus parking area is approximately 15 minutes each way. Please note that on public holidays, most major stores will be closed; however, most leather and souvenir shops will be open. Since you’ll be visiting religious venues, please dress respectfully; no bare shoulders or shorts allowed. less

This evening, you’ll have the unique opportunity to visit St. Mark’s Basilica after the crowds have left and it closes to the public. Unlike daytime visits, this exclusive opening of the basilica lets you admire this magnificent structure when it turns silent, just listening to the narration of your guide. A motor launch ride down the Giudecca Canal takes you to Riva degli Schiavoni, a short walk from the square. You’ll meet your guide in St. Marks’s Square, the heart of Venice and meeting place, living room and promenade for both Venetians and visitors. The church was built on the plan of a Greek cross in Byzantine style. The beautiful facade shows different architectural styles with gold mosaic arches rising above the carved, Romanesque portal; the rooftop is crowned with five domes, reminiscent of Hagia Sofia in Istanbul. Showcased in the center are the four bronze horses brought from Byzantium in 1204. The inside is rich in mosaics, with many of them dating back to Byzantium. St. Mark's Basilica houses other extraordinary treasures, the finest being the gold altar screen, encrusted with more than 1,000 jewels and Byzantine enamels. This evening you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a special performance of a well-known ballet (Giselle or Swan Lake), in one of the city’s theater venues. Dance is a huge part of the Russian’s nature. Dancing comes as natural to Russians, as singing comes natural to Italians. St. Petersburg has long been regarded as one of the world’s most famous ballet centers. For two centuries Russia has maintained its superiority in ballet, an art that was brought from Europe at the beginning of the 18th century. There was a period of adapting to this strange manner of dancing, which was initially shared with only a small segment of the population. After a long time of creating Russian ballet schools and theaters, with the help of Italian and French choreographers, coaches, artists, composers, dancers and ballerinas, the triumph of the Russian ballet was born at the beginning of the 20th century. After the show, your coach will be waiting to return you to your ship. *Price reflected on NCL.com is inclusive of the Pre-Book and Save offer. Note: Theater is not wheelchair accessible; there are stairs and no elevator. Photo and video recording is not allowed during the performance. Seating assignments are selected at random and are not based upon your time of booking. less

First, you will pass Perlan or 'The Pearl', a glass dome on the top of the hot-water tanks in Reykjavik. Then, you’ll continue through Reykjavik’s suburbs, towards Hafnarfjordur. From here, you’ll drive through the rugged lava fields of the Reykjanes peninsula towards the Blue Lagoon, where you will stop for approximately two hours to indulge in the waters of the lagoon itself. The Blue Lagoon owes its existence to the nearby geothermal power plant. A new facility was opened in 1999 offering a tax-free shop, café and very good changing-room facilities. The water of the Lagoon is 98° F warm, mineral-rich and reputed for its healing properties. The blue color of the water, the steam and the 13-foot high lava wall surrounding the Lagoon succeed in creating a unique atmosphere. This natural and very popular health spa is now a major attraction in the region and considered to be one of the most visited places on the island. This is not a swimming-pool for regular swimming, rather a unique relaxing bathing experience. Drive back to Reykjavik, over the barren Reykjanes peninsula dominated by old lava-flows. From the Blue Lagoon, you’ll head back to Hafnarfjordur and continue on to Reykjavik. Note: This tour is not recommended for guests with mobility problems. For hygienic purposes, you will have to take a shower without swimwear before entering the lagoon. less

Driving from the port to the center of the island, arrive to Monumento al Campesino; situated one next to the other, the house museum and peasant monument were built to immortalize the hard work of Lanzarote’s peasant community whose efforts materialized in La Geria, a unique production of agricultural goods from a dry and arid land. The peasant monument known as the Monument to Fertility was designed by Cesar Manrique with water tanks from old fishing boats elevated onto a rock platform. The strength of this work is found in the mixing of local and traditional architectural elements such as bright white color and round lines with the modern use of recycled materials assembled as a “meccano”. The sculpture placed in the geographic center of Lanzarote has the effect of a lookout and, from its approximately 50 feet (15 meters) of height of superposed boat tankers, becomes a water metaphor; the water element has become a symbol of the peasant’s hard life. The house museum contains an extraordinary collection of utensils and instruments used by the peasant community throughout history to work, transport and store products, or simply to live. After a short drive through the dramatic wine landscape of La Geria, you’ll arrive at Bodegas La Geria for a tour of the wine cellar and a taste of the local wine. La Geria wine cellar is one of the most important in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands. It is located in the heart of Lanzarote’s main wine producing area. Built at the end of the 19th century by the Rijo family, it experienced crucial technological improvements after the takeover in 1993 by its current owners, allowing the production of high quality wines. Next, you’ll visit El Grifo Wine Museum, housed in ancient bodegas dating back to 1775 and built on top of the solidified lava from a volcanic eruption. A true example of local architecture, the cellar is marked by the simplicity of its construction materials: extraordinary thick walls made of volcanic stones and plaster combined with ceilings supported by long wooden beams, mainly coming from derelict ships. The exemplary ethnographic collection dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries gives the visitor an opportunity to observe the evolution of wine making equipment. Cesar Manrique´s monument to the mythological griffin placed on the road indicates access to the museum. During the visit at El Grifo, you’ll taste three different local wines with the assistance of a professional sommelier. Note: You must be at least 18 years of age in order to participate in the wine tasting. less

Your tour begins with a visit to the typical market, in Funchal’s center, where an infinite variety of tropical fruits, vegetables, flowers, fish, regional articles, etc. can be seen. A few steps form the local market you'll have the chance to visit the embroidery factory and taste the world-famous Madeira wine. The tour continues to the village of Monte, where you have time to explore this small village perched up in the hills overlooking Funchal, and formerly a health resort for Europe's high society. After this visit, you'll have the opportunity to experience a voyage by cable car with nature at your feet! Made up by 12 cabins of eight seats each, this unforgettable voyage to the Botanical Gardens will take about seven minutes and offers its visitors a new panoramic route with privileged sights of not only Funchal’s bay but also over the River of Joao Gomes, a place of rare and exotic beauty made up by an important nucleus of Laurissilva forest. Since the 17th century, Madeira Island had been waiting for a botanical garden, a dream that came true in 1960. Located less than two miles from the center of Funchal at Quinta do Bom Sucesso - a private Quinta belonging to the Reid’s family - where the climatic conditions are much in favor of exuberant vegetation, the Botanical Garden boasts harmonious forms, contrasting colors and more than 2,000 plants. Throughout the gardens you can find the plants labeled with their scientific names, common name and origin. Note: A jacket is recommended as Madeira has a microclimate. Cable car is not suitable for passengers with walking difficulties as access is similar to a ski lift; i.e. cable car does not stop for boarding, rather it moves in slowly. Not recommended for persons with walking difficulties. This tour involves an approximately five-minute walk from the local market to the embroidery factory and an extensive amount of walking at the gardens. Norwegian Jade guests sailing on February 9 and 18, and April 3 and 12, 2012 will not stop at the market, as it is closed on Sundays and holidays. less

Your excursion begins at the pier of Monaco where you’ll board a coach for your drive along the F1 circuit, up to the Grande Corniche to arrive at the Medieval village of Eze, perched on a craggy peak above the Mediterranean. You’ll be dropped off at the general parking area in Eze and will have the choice to visit the perfume factory or to walk up the steep cobblestone streets of Eze where the alluring Medieval atmosphere will enchant you. The streets of this town are closed to traffic and the town can only be explored on foot. Don’t miss the magnificent views of the coast from the top as you stroll along the narrow cobblestone streets. After some free time you’ll rejoin your coach to travel by the Middle Corniche back to the Principality of Monaco. Your guide will take you up by elevators and escalators to the Old Town. Before reaching the Prince's Palace Square, you’ll see the cathedral where Prince Rainier married Grace Kelly and where they are both now laid to rest. After some free time you’ll have the option to return to the pier by motorcoach or you can choose to walk back on your own. Note: During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers, wear comfortable shoes, a hat, sunglasses and bring bottled water. Guests must be able to walk approximately 3 miles over various surfaces. Tour order may vary. The return from Monaco Rock to your ship will be approximately 10 minutes of walking. less

Pompeii once supported a flourishing civilization that was revealed nearly intact after being buried for about 1,700 years. The once-prosperous commercial and political center with a population of 25,000 was hidden under 20 feet of volcanic ash and cinders during the fateful eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Originally a seaport, the eruption raised the land and left the ruined town far from the bay. You’ll enter Pompeii through the Sea Gate and walk along the cobblestone streets to the Agora. Surrounded by temples and porticoes, this was the religious, civic and business center of the city. Because Pompeii was so well preserved, you can see many fine details that reveal the lifestyles of the residents, such as mosaic floors and colorful frescoes in some of the homes. As you wander through this ancient city, you can’t help but notice the still-active Mount Vesuvius towering above. If time permits, you’ll visit a cameo factory nearby to see how the famous jewelry is made and then have some time to browse the store. Note: During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers and bring bottled water. This tour includes extensive walking during the visit of Pompeii’s excavations. less

Enjoy highlights of the city and a visit to a leading wine producing estate in the land of farmers, olive groves and vineyards; where harvest after harvest, from parents to children, the tradition has been handed down. Stop in front of the Basilica of Bonaria for an explanation of the history of this Church, from the outside. Ascend to Monte Uprino for a great panoramic photo opportunity of the city below. A scenic drive takes you to Serdiana where you’ll visit a local winery and enjoy a wine tasting.
It all started in 1918, when Francesco Argiolas started from scratch and planted the first vineyard with the assistance of some war prisoners; the rest is history, and you’ll hear it all during your tour. Visit the cellars where the juice is fermented and the wine is aged in barrels, in the company of an expert. Three generations of the family work together to produce a high quality product. After visiting the cantina, you’ll taste their wines accompanied by Sardinian snacks to help you discover the flavors and sensations that centuries of know-how can offer. Before returning to your ship, you’ll have some free time in Cagliari.
Note: Tour involves approximately 1/3 mile/500 meters of walking over a relatively flat terrain. There are approximately 20 steps in the wine tasting room. Guests are suggested to wear comfortable walking shoes. less

Leaving the pier you'll proceed towards Pico dos Barcelos, where you can see distant Funchal and the surrounding villages scattered over the green slopes. Continue towards Camara de Lobos, a well-known fishing village used by Sir Winston Churchill to create beautiful island paintings. There, you’ll see its lovely, quaint setting of red-tile-roofed houses clustered on the rocky point and the brightly painted fishing boats anchored in the harbor. Your tour will then proceed to Cabo Girao, the highest sea cliff in Europe and the second highest in the world. Soaring 1,900 feet (579 meters), its etched face tells the tale of its volcanic origins. From this impressive promontory, enjoy breathtaking views along the island’s southern coast. Pass by Estreito de Camara de Lobos, known for its vineyards, arriving at Quinta do Estreito which nestled among vineyards on the southern slopes of the main wine producing area of Madeira, offering a wonderfully close contact with nature and a marvelous view over the south coast of Madeira Island. The Blue Mosque is one of the most prominent landmarks in Istanbul, with its impressive domes and semi domes, fine courtyards and six tall and slender minarets. While you enjoy your walking tour inside this magnificent structure you’ll gaze in awe at its blue-green tile interior which gives the Mosque its name. It is renowned for its architectural harmony, proportion and elegance. Breathtaking stained-glass windows and graceful arabesques decorate this mighty structure. Continue your tour with a visit to the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest covered markets in the world with over six-thousand stalls that sell everything you can imagine, including carpets, jewelry, leather goods, silver and a variety of souvenirs. The Bazaar is composed of two sections: the covered traditional part and the modern open section. The maze of streets and lanes are one of the greatest sights in the city, where various trades are segregated into different sections. You’ll have a chance to explore the exotic atmosphere of the covered part for a brief period of time. You’ll also visit the open and modern section which offers the best artworks and most reliable shopping. Here, you’ll see a presentation on the unique art of Turkish carpets and be given additional time to shop. Enjoy some complimentary refreshments while you shop and stroll in the handicraft store. Note: Tour is only available for Norwegian Jade winter sailings. Participants are required to remove their shoes in order to enter the Mosque. After transferring from your ship to St. Mark's Square, you’ll meet your guide and see the facade of St. Mark’s Basilica, a church of inestimable beauty. Your next stop is the Doge’s Palace, a magnificent Gothic masterpiece with its pink marble exterior and lacy stone arches dating from the 14th century. A guided visit will take you through apartments and rooms filled with paintings. ‘Paradise,’ by Domenico and Jacopo Tintoretto, fills an entire wall in the Great Council Hall. Also learn about Venice’s political history. See the lagoon through the grillwork of the Bridge of Sighs as you walk across to the old prison cells on the other side where Casanova was once held. After this visit to Doge’s Palace you’ll continue to a nearby glass factory showroom where you'll see a demonstration on how the famed Murano glass is made, followed by some free time to take a gondola ride, explore the area, shop, or perhaps visit the interior of St. Mark’s on your own. You’ll meet you escort at a designated time and place for the return to your ship. Note: Your tour will depart from and return to your ship. If you wish to take a gondola ride during your free time on tour, please see the Shore Excursion desk for details. Guests who are planning to visit religious sites during free time or on tour, please dress appropriately; no bare shoulders or shorts are allowed. In case of particularly high tide, the main entrance to the cathedral may be blocked. Photography is not permitted inside St. Mark’s Cathedral and the Doge’s Palace. Venice is a city built on and encompassed by water. Most tours require a lot of walking and climbing of stairs over many bridges and therefore are not suggested for anyone with walking difficulties. There are approximately 500 steps to navigate, uneven and cobblestone terrain, and approximately 2 kilometers of walking on this tour. For those of you whose main interest in Peterhof is the beauty of its magnificent gardens and fountains, you’ll find this to be the perfect tour as they will be the sole focus of this outing. Peterhof, the town of palaces, fountains and parks, was built by Peter the Great to rival Versailles and a great part of the work was focused on the lavish gardens. The estate construction spanned two centuries and upon its completion it encompassed seven parks and more than 20 smaller palaces and pavilions. Peter himself designed the layout of the 300-acre park and spectacular fountains, 144 in total, all operating without the use of pumps by a combination of naturally generated water pressure and magic.
The Upper Park has as its centerpiece the Neptune Fountain, ending up here after Paul I bought it during one of his shopping trips to Germany. The Lower Park where you find the famous Grand Cascade – often considered the chief delight of the grounds – consists of three waterfalls, an avenue of 64 fountains and 37 gilded statues. Samson, constructed in 1734-1735 and the main attraction of Peterhof, is located at the base of the Great Cascade. There are a couple of fountains that will spray an innocent passerby for the mere mistake of stepping on a funny stone or sitting on the wrong bench. A hydrofoil will arrive at the pier located in the Low Park to whisk you back to the city while you have the great opportunity so see the city from the perspective of the Gulf of Finland.
*Price reflected on NCL.com is inclusive of the Pre-Book and Save offer.
Note: This tour does not enter Peterhof Palace. Operation of hydrofoil depends on weather conditions and is subject to cancellation without prior notice. Hydrofoil is not wheelchair accessible. less

Today, only parts of the temple remain at the museum and only ruins remain at the site. The Temple of Zeus no longer exists and its traces have disappeared through the ages. The Temple of Hera, Prytaneion, and Philippeion were monuments standing in the sacred grove. The famous stadium, with a capacity of 45,000 spectators, is entered through a long, tunnel-like passage. Begin your tour by sightseeing boat and pass by Suomenlinna, a series of small interconnected islands near Helsinki that are popular with area residents because of their museums, parks and gardens. In 1748, a fortress was built on the islands and was dubbed the ‘Gibraltar of the North’. As your guide describes Helsinki's unique relationship to the sea, continue past waterfront houses and old villas in this unique urban archipelago. Also pass by several other points of interest, including the icebreaker fleet docked for the summer season, and Helsinki Zoo. The zoo is one of the most northernmost zoos in the world. Disembark the boat and enjoy a short visit to Kauppatori (Market Square), where you can shop for local handicrafts, perhaps sample luscious Finnish berries or just enjoy the friendly atmosphere. In warm weather, the square is a popular spot with both locals and tourists. Rejoin your sightseeing coach for a leisurely panoramic tour of some of the main highlights the city has to offer. Pass the Presidential Palace and Uspenski Cathedral, make a photo stop in Senate Square, and then continue on to Mannerheim Street with the Parliament House, National Museum and Finlandia Hall. The Olympic Stadium and new Opera House will also be seen before arriving at Sibelius Park for a final photo opportunity of the monument of over 600 steel pipes which honor the great Finnish composer Jean Sibelius. Note: Order of sights may vary. The panoramic tour section does not include any visits to venues. If the Market Square is closed, an alternative shopping venue will be used. Not far from Mykonos lays the island of Delos, the 'island of light'. According to mythology, Zeus, the King of the Gods, fell in love with a beautiful Titaness named Leto, but when his wife discovered his infidelity, she forbade Mother Earth to give Leto refuge. Lonely and pregnant, Leto wandered the earth until the island appeared amid the waves so that she would have a place to give birth to twins: Artemis, goddess of the hunt and virginity, and Apollo, god of truth and light. Pilgrims from all over Greece came to pay their respects, creating one of the wealthiest and most revered shrines of antiquity. After reaching the island by chartered boat, you’ll discover among the ruins, one of the island’s most spectacular relics, the Avenue of the Lions, where perfect replicas of the 7th century Naxian marble beasts crouch in silent vigilance at the sacred lake where Leto gave birth to her twins. Beyond, a path leads to Mt. Kynthos, where Zeus observed the event. There are many other interesting monuments which you’ll be able to admire during your visit. Note: Tour involves approximately 1/2 mile of walking on uneven gravel terrain. Not recommended for guests on wheelchairs. Delos is explored on foot and the two-hour walk is over uneven terrain and the steps can be slippery. Temperatures can reach extreme highs during summer months; we recommend that you drink a lot of water, use suitable sun protection and dress in layers. The boat ride between Mykonos and Delos can be rough at times, depending on sea conditions. Due to time constraints, this tour is not available for Norwegian Spirit guests on sailings departing from Venice. Delos is closed on Mondays so this tour is not available for Norwegian Spirit sailings of sailings of June 10 and September 2, 2013. less

Located on the west coast of Naples, you’ll find the still-active volcano, Mount Vesuvius. For the adventurous traveler, this is the ideal way to explore the volcano that destroyed the city of Pompeii. You’ll arrive at the base of the National Park of Vesuvius, from where you’ll board a special 4 x 4 coach. Ecologic and equipped with air-conditioning, it will take you to a height of about 3,000 feet. During the drive up the path in the National Park, you’ll relax looking at the Gulf of Naples. Once at 3,000 feet, you’ll proceed on foot for another 1,000 feet up on a narrow zigzagging path. Once on the rim of the crater walls, you’ll meet an official alpine guide and walk part of the way around the edge to enjoy this natural phenomenon and, of course, a panoramic view that includes Naples and the entire bay. After visiting the crater, you’ll walk back to the 4 x 4 coach, which will take you to the motorcoach parking for your return drive to Naples and your ship. A visit to the ancient city of Nora is a must for those who want to learn about the island’s centuries of occupation, admire Roman and Phoenician remains and the sparkling blue Mediterranean under the watchful eye of the 400 year old Spanish watchtower. Enjoy an orientation drive through Cagliari with a photo stop at Monte Urpino’s panoramic lookout point. Drive along the coast passing St. Gilla's lagoon, where if you’re lucky, you’ll see the pink flamingos and the salt flats. This pleasant drive follows the route taken by thousands of pilgrims every year as they follow Santo Efiso’s Cart.
Nora was founded by the Phoenicians. It had two harbors, one sheltered from the west winds and the other from the Mistral. The site has Carthaginian and Roman remains. After a period of Roman prosperity, there was a decline and in the 3rd Century AD the city was engulfed by the sea in a natural disaster. Admire the beautiful mosaics of the thermal baths, an amphitheater and small Roman Theater, as well as small houses and villas. Recently the forum, or agora, has been found, but a substantial part of the former town remains under the sea. It isn't hard to imagine ancient people living their lives so close to the blue waters of the Mediterranean. You’ll also see the outside of the little church where, every year, during the first days in May, important religious celebrations take place to commemorate St. Efisio. The church was built on the same site where the saint was martyred.
Note: Tour involves walking approximately 1 mile/1 1/2 kilometers over uneven and rough terrain at the Nora site. Comfortable walking shoes are suggested. This tour is not recommended for guests with walking difficulties or that are in wheelchairs. less

Driving along the beautiful seaside promenade, you’ll enjoy the views of the marina filled with luxurious yachts on one side and hotels on the other. You’ll then pass the magnificent cathedral and the Almudaina Palace going to the center of Palma through streets filled with luxurious shops, and Via Roma where the flower market is held under the shade of the plane trees. Continue on towards Santa Maria, admiring the views of the most agricultural part of the island. Your final destination is the well-known cellars of Macia Batle in the village of Santa Maria. Its 250 acres of vineyards are distributed in the denominations of the region with special emphasis on the rare autochthon Majorcan grapes, not leaving out other traditional varieties. By combining these grapes, the results are beautifully composed wines with unforgettable character. The agreeable sun and microclimate of Majorca join with the soft winds of the Mediterranean to guarantee a top quality wine, something that the Romans, keen wine makers, already knew. Discover how such wines are created and enjoy a tasting of different wines with some snacks; an experience for all your senses. Returning to Palma, you’ll make a photo stop at Bellver Castle from where you’ll have a beautiful view over the pier and the city. Begin your tour with a motorcoach ride through the area known as the Le Vieux Port or Old Port where the Greeks landed in 600 BC. Here the cafes, boats and restaurants are classically French. Drive along the Corniche J.F. Kennedy which follows the natural coast and offers lovely views of offshore islands dominated by the Marseilleveyre Massif (Summit). The Basilica of Notre Dame de la Garde is the most magnificent building of its kind in southern France and at this impressive landmark you’ll find that it is well worth climbing the 170 steps. The basilica was built in the mid-1800s in Romano-Byzantine style and boasts beautiful objects on the walls and a stunning marble statue in the crypt. It stands on a limestone spire and offers a glorious 360 degree view of the city below. For those who do not wish to climb to the top, the view from the lower level is also quite splendid. Climbing up towards the central mountain range, your tour takes the road that leads to Monte, a village notable for its many fine properties and gardens. At Monte you'll have the opportunity to take a trip back to the past when you join the toboggan ride back to Livramento. The ride down the hill on the wicker sledges is an exciting one, providing you with a taste of the Madeira of the past decades, when this was the established form of transport. Then, proceed to Pico do Arieiro, the third highest peak on the island with an altitude of almost 6,000 feet (1,818 meters). Views are spectacular up here and on a clear day, it is even possible to see Porto Santo, the neighboring island, which is situated 30 nautical miles to the north. Continue to Camacha, a beautiful small village on the hills east of Funchal. It is famous for its 'Apple Festival' and its very active folklore dance groups. Camacha is also called 'the village of basket makers' which is actually not doing it any justice as it is much more than that; it represents the center of Madeira's willow craft industry. Nowadays they make furniture, hats, ornaments, kitchen utensils, wine holders and of course, baskets of all sizes and shapes. All in all, over 1,000 different articles are on exhibition, which is an absolute 'must see' for every visitor. Note: A jacket is recommended as Madeira has a microclimate. Tour involves walking on cobblestones and uneven surfaces with some approximately 10 steps at Monte, 10 to 15 steps at Pico do Arieiro and 5 to 12 steps at Camacha. Tour may be operated in reverse order. Toboggan ride will be closed in observance of Good Friday, so it will not be available for guests on the Norwegian Jade sailing of April 3, 2012. less

Your coach will take you inland, passing through Sao Martinho to the Socorridos ravine. Eira do Serrado is reached after a short drive along a winding road, offering spectacular views of the interior of the island. Here, it is a short and easy walk up to the viewpoint on Pico de Serrado at an altitude of approximately 3,592 feet (1,094 meters), for an amazing view down onto the village of Curral das Freiras. Curral das Freiras (Nuns Valley) is a small village nestling between almost perpendicular mountains in the heart of the island. In 1566, the nuns from the Santa Clara convent fled from pirates attacking Funchal and found seclusion here where they also brought the convent’s treasure. Your next stop will be at Monte. This small village, perched up in the hills overlooking Funchal, was formerly a health resort for Europe's high society, including Austrian Emperor Charles I. One of its long-lost features was a rack railway, which connected Monte with Funchal. From here you will board the cable car and see Madeira from the air, experiencing the wonderful views all the way down to Funchal. The cable car is made up of 40 small cabins with a capacity of up to eight people per cabin and it has an approximate duration of 15 minutes. Your last stop will be at an important wine lodge, where a sample of the famous Madeira wine will be offered. Note: A jacket is recommended as Madeira has a microclimate. This tour involves approximately 3/4-mile of walking (5 to 10 minutes) on cobblestones and uneven surfaces with approximately five steps to get to the viewpoint at Eira Do Serrado; approximately 10 steps at Monte and five to eight steps at the Madeira Wine Company. Cable car is not suitable for guests with walking difficulties as access is similar to a ski lift; i.e. cable car does not stop for boarding, rather it moves slowly. An approximately five-minute walk is required from the bus stop to the wine lodge. less

The small fishing village of Katakolon is the gateway to the mystical site of Ancient Olympia, some 25 miles to the east. Visit the remarkable site of Olympia where the first Olympiad was held. Its setting could not be more idyllic: in the middle of a fertile valley with the rivers of Alphios and Kladhios flowing past. The site was a sanctuary even before the stadium was built and the games took place in the sacred area called Altis. The most imposing monument in this area was the outstanding Temple of Zeus one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Nowadays there exists only the ruins of the temple and the statue has disappeared, its traces lost in the ages. The Temple of Hera, the Prytaneion and the Philippeion were also monuments standing in the sacred grove. The famous Stadium, the largest of its day, is entered through a long, tunnel-like passage constructed in Roman times. Continue to the Archaeological Museum, a five-minute walk from the site. Among the great finds of the area that are displayed here are the Head of Hera and the superb statue of Hermes of Praxiteles. In addition you’ll be able to admire ornaments from the Temple of Zeus, and many other priceless pieces. less

Enjoy a scenic drive through Provence before reaching the charming medieval town of Aix. This was the capital of the Provence region and its attractions are many. Embark on a walking tour of the Cours Mirabeau. This wide avenue is shaded by trees and was built in the 1600s on the site of the city’s medieval ramparts; its verdant tunnel of foliage protects pedestrians from the heat of the Provencal sun. The aristocratic facades of the old hotels line the Cours and their wrought iron balconies and finely carved doorways invite the visitor to explore. One of the nicest fountains you'll see is certainly the natural hot water fountain covered with moss, dating from 1734. Note the different architectural styles of Saint Sauveur Cathedral with a Romanesque nave, a Merovingian baptistery and a Gothic section. These various styles date between the 5th and 17th centuries. Whatever your interest is, the ambiance of Aix en Provence makes for an enjoyable excursion. Enjoy some free time before rejoining your coach for the drive back to Marseille. Note: Tour involves extensive walking on level ground. Not recommended for guests who are wheelchair confined. There are very few public restrooms in Aix, guests can use the facilities in bars and restaurants as long as drinks or food are purchased. less

Feel like a Russian yourself this afternoon and try to see St. Petersburg through the eyes of its inhabitants. While touring majestic St. Petersburg, one is dazzled by the beauty of its palaces, cathedrals and parks, but the city offers much more than this. You’ll visit the metro’s stunning stations, intended by Stalin to be the palaces for the people. The best Soviet architects were employed to design St. Petersburg’s metro stations. Thousands of tons of marble, granite and limestone were used to face the walls, and sculptures, mosaics and chandeliers were commissioned from leading artists. The first line, opened in 1955, is the most fascinating. You’ll be shown a few stations on this line and take a short ride on the train. A peek at St. Petersburg’s markets and food stores provides an intriguing insight into local life. Many locals shop for food in the food markets which sell fruits, vegetables, fresh meat and fish, delicious homemade cottage cheese and wonderful natural honey. Sellers in the markets come from all over the former Soviet Union and one can witness quite a variety of nationalities there and enjoy friendly attitudes. You’ll be treated to a variety of vodkas and traditional Russian condiments served to compliment this famous Russian drink. After the vodka sampling, you’ll be shown to your coach for the return transfer to your ship. *Price reflected on NCL.com is inclusive of the Pre-Book and Save offer. Note: This tour is not wheelchair accessible and not recommended for guests with walking difficulties. There are long and steep escalators to reach metro stations and photos are not permitted. Explore one of the most interesting Mayan sites in the region, a collection of ancient stone carvings dating from roughly 300 BCE to 100 BCE. These carvings were found at the Izapa Ruins and depict the Mayan ideas of the creation of the universe and their religious beliefs. Among the carvings is a particularly interesting and complex one called Stella 5 that depicts the Tree of Life as well as about a dozen human figures, animals and more. This complex carving has led to many different theories about its subject matter. Most theories concern the Mayan religious beliefs; however some involve speculation about visitors from other continents before the arrival of Columbus. The Tree of Life in the Mayan world is depicted as a Ceiba tree. This tall tree is commonly found in Chiapas and the Mayan jungles. It is easily identifiable by its extraordinary height, high crown and large, buttressed roots. For the Mayans, the tree represents a connection between the three realms of the universe- the underworld, earth and the heavens. Afterwards, take a short bus ride to Chocolate Discovery. Here, you’ll learn about the discovery and history of the sacred cacao bean and its importance to the Mayan people. Learn how the cocoa beans are transformed into chocolate right at the main square. Also, see a variety of local handcrafts and exotic flowers of the region. Local dances and marimba players will share their skills with lively performances. After a short stop to see the local church, you will be on your way back to your ship. Note: Guests should wear a hat and comfortable shoes. Bring eco-friendly sunscreen and bug repellent. Most areas are not wheelchair accessible. less

You’ll admire its fabulous interior, the exquisitely carved choir stalls and other fine examples of Spanish Renaissance sculpture. The coastal bike tour approximately 8 miles (14km) follows the tracks of the narrow-gauge Parenzana Railroad, which once ran from Trieste to Porec. For 34 years, the Parenzana Railroad was the main transport route between Istria and Central Europe. Italian, Slovenian, and Croatian mayors of the municipalities through which the line had passed decided to establish this new route. The name symbolizes the friendship between the three nations and is now an opportunity for everyone who wants to keep fit. About a hundred years after the Parenzana first started puffing steam along the tracks, all health-conscious people, hikers, cyclists, runners, and other sportsmen and sportswomen, tourists or locals, can experience a new way of getting to know interesting places. The route takes you through old towns and villages, to the sea, through vineyards and olive tree plantations, through short tunnels, across valleys, and up into hilly land. It ends in the tourist town of Portoroz, where you’ll take a return transfer to the pier. Note: Participants must be at least 12 years of age and weigh less than 330 lbs.(150 kg) and be in good health/physical condition. less
