Enjoy a drive to the southern part of Lanzarote, passing the picturesque villages of Macher and Uga and crossing black lava streams before arriving to the southwest coast of the island. There you’ll make a photo stop by Los Hervideros where the sea water seems to boil in a volcanic cave. On your way to the Timanfaya National Park, you’ll stop for a short camel ride. The park is a natural museum of unique beauty. Bizarre craters, streams of lava and fields of ashes formed by eruptions during the 18th century are mixed here in a nearly unrealistic lunar landscape. Upon arrival to Islote de Hilario, a crater with the highest surface temperatures in the region, you’ll experience still-existing activity not far underground as you gather around for the fun demonstrations. The geothermal energy is so strong that water gushes up and dry weed catches fire within seconds. Board a coach to embark on a tour of the Fire Mountains called the "Lunar Route”, which goes deep inside the heart of the national park and lasts approximately 45 minutes. Through a recorded narration, you’ll learn about the history of the volcanic eruptions and see how slowly life conquers the inhospitable landscape with very few endemic plants. From here you’ll drive to the wine-growing area of La Geria where the locals have modified grape growing through the centuries in order to preserve the vines from the harsh natural elements and provide a special cultivation for the grapes that produce the famous Malvasia wine. These vines are grown inside dimple-like craters and surrounded by volcanic stone semi-circles (called Zocos), built for each individual vine to provide much needed protection from the fierce winds. Visit one of the local wine cellars for a taste of the local wine before the return drive to your ship. Note: Because Fire Mountains is the most visited attraction, to avoid delays at the entrance, tour order may vary but all mentioned sites will be covered. No professional camera or video equipment is allowed at Timanfaya National Park, including the camel area. Comfortable shoes and a light jacket are recommended. less

Driving from the port to the center of the island, arrive to Monumento al Campesino; situated one next to the other, the house museum and peasant monument were built to immortalize the hard work of Lanzarote’s peasant community whose efforts materialized in La Geria, a unique production of agricultural goods from a dry and arid land. The peasant monument known as the Monument to Fertility was designed by Cesar Manrique with water tanks from old fishing boats elevated onto a rock platform. The strength of this work is found in the mixing of local and traditional architectural elements such as bright white color and round lines with the modern use of recycled materials assembled as a “meccano”. The sculpture placed in the geographic center of Lanzarote has the effect of a lookout and, from its approximately 50 feet (15 meters) of height of superposed boat tankers, becomes a water metaphor; the water element has become a symbol of the peasant’s hard life. The house museum contains an extraordinary collection of utensils and instruments used by the peasant community throughout history to work, transport and store products, or simply to live. After a short drive through the dramatic wine landscape of La Geria, you’ll arrive at Bodegas La Geria for a tour of the wine cellar and a taste of the local wine. La Geria wine cellar is one of the most important in Lanzarote and the Canary Islands. It is located in the heart of Lanzarote’s main wine producing area. Built at the end of the 19th century by the Rijo family, it experienced crucial technological improvements after the takeover in 1993 by its current owners, allowing the production of high quality wines. Next, you’ll visit El Grifo Wine Museum, housed in ancient bodegas dating back to 1775 and built on top of the solidified lava from a volcanic eruption. A true example of local architecture, the cellar is marked by the simplicity of its construction materials: extraordinary thick walls made of volcanic stones and plaster combined with ceilings supported by long wooden beams, mainly coming from derelict ships. The exemplary ethnographic collection dating from the late 19th and early 20th centuries gives the visitor an opportunity to observe the evolution of wine making equipment. Cesar Manrique´s monument to the mythological griffin placed on the road indicates access to the museum. During the visit at El Grifo, you’ll taste three different local wines with the assistance of a professional sommelier. Note: You must be at least 18 years of age in order to participate in the wine tasting. less

Drive along the northeast coast further north to reach the Malpais de la Corona, a widespread plain of weather-beaten lava stone formed by the last eruptions of the Corona Crater over 3,000 years ago. Through the years, singular vegetation unfolded itself, which added a special charm to this otherwise poor and dry landscape. In this area you’ll visit Jameos del Agua, a partially open cave which is part of a huge lava tunnel. The famous native artist Cesar Manrique transformed this cave into a small paradise. As you enter, you can see the subterranean lake roofed by a huge arch of lava stones. Small, blind Albino crabs that are normally only found in deep-sea areas inhabit this lake. A tropical garden with beautiful plants is set up on an open area of the cave with an artificial pool in the center. Passing through the garden there is the entrance to the concert hall, a natural auditorium with capacity for more than 500 persons. Continue to Guatiza Village to visit the Cactus Garden where Cesar Manrique converted a natural gravel mine into a beautifully designed garden with more than 1,000 species of cacti from all over the world. The interior structure is circular with walls made up of terraces descending from the ground in levels displaying the different varieties of cactus. Surrounding the garden, you can also see the local cultivations of cactus with cochineal parasite used as a natural component for coloring and as ingredient for some other drinks and products. Your next stop will be at Tahiche Village, where you’ll visit the Cesar Manrique Foundation, which purpose is to preserve the environment and combine the beauties of the island with natural protection and decoration. The artist’s former house, now converted into a foundation, is a two-level structure built on five huge natural volcanic bubbles and is the best example of his ideas. The upper floor is inspired by the traditional architecture of Lanzarote and the underground level takes advantage of the five natural volcanic bubbles adapted for habitation and linked by small corridors. It contains some of his own work and a private collection of contemporary art by artists such as Picasso, Tapies, Miro, etc. The Foundation is also a center of art and culture popularization; in an adjacent building you’ll find organized exhibitions and art conferences during the year. From here you’ll return to your ship. less

Barcelona’s favorable location, in perfect harmony with its immediate surroundings, together with its ease of access and varied climate, make it a starting point for discovering new landscapes and enjoying contact with nature. Your tour departs from the port passing through the main streets of Barcelona to reach Catalunya Square, considered the heart of the city. From here, you’ll continue the panoramic drive along Passeig de Gracia, the best-known boulevard in town. Your guide will point out of the masterpieces of Gaudi’s architecture: the Casa Mila and Casa Batllo, two of the best-known landmarks of the city. Reaching Diagonal Avenue, your tour continues to Montserrat, a peculiar rocky mountain range which is the site of the monastery where people come to worship ‘La Moreneta,’ the black Madonna who is the patron-virgin of Catalonia. The Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat was founded in the 11th century and is located in a natural park 37 miles to the west of Barcelona. The Benedictine community, now numbering some 80 monks, has served the shrine for almost a thousand years. They are dedicated to a life of prayer, to working, and to welcoming pilgrims, making the site a place for dialogue, prayer and culture. Besides the monks, the Escolans also live in Montserrat, forming the oldest boy’s choir in Europe. During your stay and visit to Montserrat, you’ll visit the sanctuary and have free time to take-in the activity of your choice. Spend extra time at the sanctuary, explore some more, take pictures, shop for that last-minute souvenir, have lunch or grab a coffee at one of the restaurants and cafeterias on location. Once you finish the visit you’ll be driven back to your ship. less

Board your local boat (caique) from the old port of Santorini for a 15-minute trip up to Nea Kameni. En route, admire the volcanic shores with the peculiar shape formations of the black volcanic rocks and the white pumice. After disembarking, a steep and fast-paced 30-minute (3/4-mile) hike on rocky and gravel terrain takes you to the crater of the still active volcano. During your walk up an ascending path, you’ll have the opportunity to observe the lava fragments and the volcanic rock formations. Once you’ve reached the crater you’ll have time to relax and enjoy the view of Santorini Island and the amazing cliffs of the caldera. Then you start your descent back to the boat. Finally you’ll sail towards the thermal springs of Palea Kameni, with its green sulfur warm waters and temperatures that reach 37° C (98° F). Here you’ll have the opportunity to jump off the boat and swim to the springs (weather permitting). Note: The volcano’s hiking area is a very steep lava field with loose rock and uneven terrain. There is no shade; we recommend that you wear appropriate sun protection and footwear. If you wish to swim, please bring your swimsuit, a towel and a change of clothes. The changing facilities on the boat are limited. You must be a strong swimmer as the waters are deep and the current is strong. There are no lifeguards on the boat or the island. The sulfur water may stain your clothes. The sea water is cold; however the springs are very warm. Tour participation is limited. Temperatures can reach extreme highs during summer months; we recommend that you drink a lot of water and use suitable sun protection. This tour ends at the tender pier and you have a choice of returning to your ship or purchasing a cable car ticket to get to Fira town. less

After a short sightseeing tour of Messina’s Piazza Duomo, you’ll continue to Savoca, a village where scenic beauty and historical-artistic heritage make it one of the most attractive, although less-known places in the area. At the entrance to the village you’ll make a short stop at ‘Bar Vitelli’, which houses a collection of local artisans’ tools and photographs taken when Francis Ford Coppola shot some scenes for the movie 'The Godfather'. You’ll visit the Cappuccini Church and see 37 mummified bodies of friars and noble people who lived there in the 18th and 19th centuries. Then start a slow walk along the village’s main street which climbs up the hill, featuring several churches dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Along your walk you’ll also see ruins of a Norman castle and magnificent views. Continue to Forza d’Agro, a charming little village overlooking the Arab-Norman Castle of Capo Sant'Alessio, and the coastline towards Messina. In 1990, Al Pacino and Sophia Coppola came here when they filmed some scenes for the movie '[The Godfather III'. From the main square, you’ll walk up a lane that leads to the Gothic-Catalan portal in front of the Church of San Agostino and you’ll also see the Baroque Mother Church before driving back to the pier. Located on the west coast of Naples, you’ll find the still-active volcano, Mount Vesuvius. For the adventurous traveler, this is the ideal way to explore the volcano that destroyed the city of Pompeii. You’ll arrive at the base of the National Park of Vesuvius, from where you’ll board a special 4 x 4 coach. Ecologic and equipped with air-conditioning, it will take you to a height of about 3,000 feet. During the drive up the path in the National Park, you’ll relax looking at the Gulf of Naples. Once at 3,000 feet, you’ll proceed on foot for another 1,000 feet up on a narrow zigzagging path. Once on the rim of the crater walls, you’ll meet an official alpine guide and walk part of the way around the edge to enjoy this natural phenomenon and, of course, a panoramic view that includes Naples and the entire bay. After visiting the crater, you’ll walk back to the 4 x 4 coach, which will take you to the motorcoach parking for your return drive to Naples and your ship. Note: The tour will not operate for Norwegian Jade winter sailings from the end of November through mid-April. Participants must be able to walk approximately 1 1/2 miles on an incline. This tour is not recommended for guests with a history of heart disease or high blood pressure and does not include lunch. During summer months expect extreme heat; we recommend that you dress in layers, wear a hat and bring bottled water. In the event of bad weather and the closure of Mt. Vesuvius crater, this tour will not operate. less

Depart the town of Split by motorcoach through the Karst Sibenik region to the famous Krka River waterfalls. Located in the lovely Krka National Park, the falls have 17 natural cascades. Krka is one of the seven national parks in Croatia and it covers an area of over 35,000 acres. The Krka River is a distinctive phenomenon due its specific biocenosis and formation of gypsum barriers. The whole area is rich with endemic species - vegetation as well as birds and fish. Due to very strong laws on natural preservation this extraordinary area has been preserved in its original form. You’ll be taken to the most attractive part of the park – the Skradinski Buk waterfalls. The highest fall is approximately 151 feet (46 meters) high, which makes it the highest gypsum barrier in Europe. Above the falls there is a large plateau that offers spectacular views for the perfect photo opportunity. You’ll also have a chance to visit the small ethnological exhibition and the old mill which still functions and you can learn about the grinding process. Around the falls there is a path for you to explore further independently. Note: During summer months expect extreme heat. We recommend that you dress in layers and bring bottled water. Walking at Krka National Park is at the guests' discretion during the free time and over the varying terrain, inclines and approximately 100 or more steps. Swimming is at the guests' own risk since no lifeguards are on duty. Sturdy walking shoes are recommended for the hike/walk portion of the tour. Lunch is not included in this tour; however, there is time for a snack on your own. Due to the nature of this tour, it is not recommended for guests with walkers or wheelchairs. The drive between Split and Krka National Park is approximately 1 1/4 hours each way, dependent upon traffic conditions. less

In the 15th and 16th centuries, Koper enjoyed a monopoly on salt and here you can discover the history of salt workers and their lifestyle in the ancient town of Piran. Both Greeks and Romans used a small rock outcrop nearby to light beacons for ships sailing into Koper, and Piran's name derives from the Greek word for fire, pyre. Today, this elegant seaside town is virtually an open-air museum, famous for its Venetian architecture and also as the birthplace of the Renaissance composer, Guiseppe Tartini. Explore some of the treasures that the one-day visitor to Istanbul usually misses, and do this in the company of a small group. Visit Suleymaniye Mosque, an important historical symbol for the Turks. It represents the best of the arts with the most powerful of political strength. The mosque is a huge complex built above the Golden Horn during the peak of the Ottoman Empire. At the time of its construction, it boasted the highest dome when measured from sea level, even though from its base it is smaller than Hagia Sophia’s. After years of careful restorations, the mosque was re-opened to visitors in 2010, although some restoration work is still going on in the courtyards. The acoustics are among some of the most distinctive features of the structure that was built not only as a place of worship, but also as a charitable organization. Its interior decorations are of simple design and subtle elegance, giving it a feeling of light and openness. Suleyman the Magnificent rests in the complex’s garden. Next stop is the Chora Museum, located just by the ancient city walls. Built between 1077 and 1081 by Maria Dukaina, the mother-in-law of Emperor Alexius Comnenus, it has had many restorations and refurbishments during its long history. The church was converted into a Mosque in the 1500s by the Ottomans. The mosaics and frescoes that adorn its ceilings and walls date from the early 14th century and depict the lives of the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ, serving as beautiful examples of the Byzantine Renaissance. Before returning to the pier, you’ll stop at Pierre Loti, a popular café overlooking the Golden Horn, for a tea break. The café is known for its beautiful views and was named after a French writer and sailor who used to spend time there, contemplating the city he loved so much and inspired his first book Aziyade. A stop will be made at the spice market, where you'll see and smell the exotic products of mystical Istanbul. Note: Not available on Norwegian Spirit sailings of April 17th, September 20th or October 2nd 2013 sailings and on day one of the Norwegian Jade winter sailings. This tour is conducted in small groups and requires a minimum number of participants to operate. Please expect differences in tour durations due to traffic conditions. Participants are required to remove their shoes in order to enter the mosque and are provided with an environmentally friendly bag to store them. As this tour visits places of worship, please dress respectfully: no bare shoulders or exposed knees. Should the Suleymaniye Mosque be closed to visitors due to religious festivities, you’ll visit another historical mosque. There is approximately 1 3/4 miles of walking over uneven surfaces and some inclines on this tour. This tour will be subject to national and religious festive days due to the closure of the sites and venues during the month of Ramadan including the Festival Period of Ramadan. less

The small fishing village of Katakolon is the gateway to the mystical site of Ancient Olympia, some 25 miles to the east. Visit the remarkable site of Olympia where the first Olympiad was held. Its setting could not be more idyllic: in the middle of a fertile valley with the rivers of Alphios and Kladhios flowing past. The site was a sanctuary even before the stadium was built and the games took place in the sacred area called Altis. The most imposing monument in this area was the outstanding Temple of Zeus one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Nowadays there exists only the ruins of the temple and the statue has disappeared, its traces lost in the ages. The Temple of Hera, the Prytaneion and the Philippeion were also monuments standing in the sacred grove. The famous Stadium, the largest of its day, is entered through a long, tunnel-like passage constructed in Roman times. Continue to the Archaeological Museum, a five-minute walk from the site. Among the great finds of the area that are displayed here are the Head of Hera and the superb statue of Hermes of Praxiteles. In addition you’ll be able to admire ornaments from the Temple of Zeus, and many other priceless pieces. less

The coastline east of Malaga is not as well known to tourists as the other side, but towns such as La Cala, Rincon de la Victoria and Torre del Mar, are popular for Spaniards. Along this subtropical coast grow sugar cane, avocado and custard trees. Some 35 miles from Malaga is Nerja, which counts many retired Britons among its residents. The historic center, which begins in the Balcony of Europe, dates from around 1487. Its 9th century castle is today a perfect view point above the sea. To the side of the balcony, you’ll find the 17th century Savior Church, constructed in Baroque-Mudejar style and the 16th century Our Lady of Sorrows Hermitage with its paintings by the master Alonso Cano. In the old quarter of town, typical small shops offer local handicrafts and local products such as sweet wine, olive oil, honey and tropical fruits. After a walk through the city, you’ll continue to the famous Caves of Nerja. Millions of years old, these breathtaking beautiful caves, should not be missed. Your surroundings get more fascinating as you descend deeper into the bowels of the earth. In its interior you’ll gaze in awe the largest stalagmites columns in the world, 161 feet high and 59 feet in diameter. Their capricious rocky formations can be compared to Modernist cathedrals, and their eight rooms include the Room of the Cataclysm, as well as the Room of the Cascade. Every year in August the Festivals of Music and Dance take place here. Note: This tour includes approximately 1 1/4-mile (2,000 meters) of walking and there are approximately 400 easy steps to be negotiated; they are perfectly safe, but not suitable for guests with walking difficulties. less
