Located in the west part of Costa Rica’s Central Valley is the scenic town of Sarchi. It is considered the home of Costa Rica’s best craftsmanship. Here, more than a century ago, primitive local artists began painting and decorating their traditional oxcarts in intricate and colorful designs. These powerful vehicles, hauled by teams of oxen, soon became the primary means of transportation throughout the nation. You’ll see how the hand-painted Costa Rican oxcart art has evolved into a brilliantly executed form of native artistic expression. You can also find an immense variety of local wood products, ranging from elaborated hand-made furniture to hand-carved doors. Leather goods and all kinds of souvenirs will be available for purchase. Lastly, make a brief stop at the little town of Grecia, famous for its historical metal church, Cathedral de la Mercedes. The church is painted in a deep dark red color and has a gothic style; its metal pieces were imported from Belgium in the 1890’s. Note: Wear light clothing, walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen. less

Explore one of the most interesting Mayan sites in the region, a collection of ancient stone carvings dating from roughly 300 BCE to 100 BCE. These carvings were found at the Izapa Ruins and depict the Mayan ideas of the creation of the universe and their religious beliefs. Among the carvings is a particularly interesting and complex one called Stella 5 that depicts the Tree of Life as well as about a dozen human figures, animals and more. This complex carving has led to many different theories about its subject matter. Most theories concern the Mayan religious beliefs; however some involve speculation about visitors from other continents before the arrival of Columbus. The Tree of Life in the Mayan world is depicted as a Ceiba tree. This tall tree is commonly found in Chiapas and the Mayan jungles. It is easily identifiable by its extraordinary height, high crown and large, buttressed roots. For the Mayans, the tree represents a connection between the three realms of the universe- the underworld, earth and the heavens. Afterwards, take a short bus ride to Chocolate Discovery. Here, you’ll learn about the discovery and history of the sacred cacao bean and its importance to the Mayan people. Learn how the cocoa beans are transformed into chocolate right at the main square. Also, see a variety of local handcrafts and exotic flowers of the region. Local dances and marimba players will share their skills with lively performances. After a short stop to see the local church, you will be on your way back to your ship. Note: Guests should wear a hat and comfortable shoes. Bring eco-friendly sunscreen and bug repellent. Your day of discovery begins when you board you air conditioned transportation. You’ll pass by buildings and homes featuring Colonial, Republican and Moorish styles and your guide explains the many influences that came to be in Cartagena. Your first stop will be 'Punta Icacos', near the fishing village of La Boquilla. Here, you’ll be greeted by local fishermen who earn a living by traditional means of fishing. These fishermen will explain the process of making, repairing and casting the nets, as well as provide a demonstration. Here, you’ll see craftsmen at work as well as learn the history and cultural importance of the precious stone. Then, visit the famous walled or Old City and Portal de Dulce, an area where local vendors sell the handmade Columbian candies, famous around the world. Take a sweet sample before continuing your walk through the Plaza de la Aduana and Simon Bolivar Square. Along the way your guide will point out areas of interest as well as information on the many churches, building and monuments before you begin your free time in the colonial city. Feel free to stroll along the beautiful streets, browse the many shops and admire the beautiful architecture and flower covered balconies before returning to your ship. Most people do not realize that chocolate was first discovered in Mexico and processed by the Aztec and Mayan Indians. But these Indians created chocolate items and drinks that are very different from the kinds of refined milk chocolate items we are familiar with from Europe. In fact, to their everlasting regret, the Mexicans never thought of adding milk to their recipes, but DID create many tasty, unusual and intriguing chocolate foods. You will be transferred to a quiet Ocean View terrace where you will first be presented with a Chocolate Martini (adults only) before this in-depth presentation gets underway describing the many stages the chocolate seed pods must go through. By grinding together some of the traditional ingredients, guests get to participate first hand in some of the same chocolate processing techniques that after many centuries are still used by the Mayans. The session will culminate in the tasting of the various chocolate items produced. After the Chocolate portion of the tour, guests will have time to shop from a large variety of chocolate products including shampoo and have the option either to go back to their ship or go to downtown. Guests opting to go downtown will be responsible for their transportation back to the ship. Note: Participants must be at least 4 years of age. Experience the leisure of a bygone era with a visit to the stately Flavel House. Now a museum, the house was built in 1885 for Captain George Flavel, Astoria's first millionaire and one of it's most prominent citizens. Today, this queen Anne-style home is a living tribute to the elegance of the Victorian period and the history of the Flavel family. Your guided tour begins at the pier and travels along Astoria's tree-lined streets. As you approach the Flavel House, you'll be immediately struck by the park-like grounds that cover an entire city block; many of the trees that surround the home were planted by the Flavels over a century ago. This beautiful setting was also the site of many Hollywood movies including the 1980's hit The Goonies and Short Circuit. One of the best-preserved examples of Queen Anne architecture in the Northwest, Flavel House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. On the outside, this stunning mansion boasts a decorative exterior, three-story octagon tower, impressive balconies and verandas. Inside, the approximate 11,600 square foot mansion features elegant woodwork, stained glass windows, and in-laid hardwood floors. As you walk into the grand entry, it's like stepping back into the 19th century. The first floor features 14-foot high ceilings, a formal parlor, music room, library, dining room, conservatory, kitchen and a butler's pantry. Climb up the winding wooden staircase to the second floor and you'll see the main bathroom (with an enclosed tin-plated copper bathtub), five bedrooms and a sewing room. The attic floor features two bedrooms that were used by the family's servants. The three-story tower provided the Captain a panoramic view of Astoria and the Columbia River. After your tour, you're invited to sit and relax in the parlor over a cup of tea and taste scones. Later, you'll have the opportunity to visit the restored Carriage House Gift Shop and purchase a souvenir of your visit before returning to the pier. less

Aboard your yellow 1927 sightseeing bus, your costumed “conductor” passes on a century of history, behind-the-scenes tales and stories.

Travel across Young’s Bay Bridge for the short journey to Fort Stevens State Park. Once you arrive a friendly and knowledgeable guide will take you on a tour of this nearly 146-year-old fort and share its fascinating history. Built by the U.S. Army in the waning days of the Civil War it may seem odd that Oregon could have been the site of a battle or two. But the U.S. government was fearful that the British would join the Confederates, so the fort was established to protect the North from a possible English invasion. And to protect it from a land attack, the fort was surrounded by a moat with a drawbridge. Today, the gun batteries, fortifications and other buildings are preserved along with 3,700 acres of woodlands, lakes, wetlands and beaches. Your guide will continue to lead you through the complex and its bunkers, abandoned gun batteries, and tower stations before heading up to the commander's station for a scenic view of the Columbia River. Then, you'll venture underground to the Battery Mishler. Here, during WWII, 10 inch rifles were mounted on disappearing carriages, which hid the guns behind concrete and earthen walls when not being fired. These powerful guns could fire 617-pound shells at a distance of nine miles. The museum will be your last stop before heading back to the pier. Enjoy browsing through the interesting artifacts that date back to the Civil War and stop in at the gift shop, which offers a variety of souvenirs commemorating your visit. less
