A 37-mile drive along the Western Highway brings you to the Caves Branch River and its winding path, through the Maya Mountains and numerous ancient caves once inhabited by the Maya. Upon arrival at Caves Branch National Park, your headquarters for the day, your guide will issue floats and headlamps while providing a tour briefing. You’ll take a 45-minute hike down a jungle trail where your guide will point out various plants, roots and herbs once used by the ancient Maya for medicinal purposes. Next, reach the entrance tunnel that heads into the underground cave system for the start of an eye-opening adventure. Then, float with gentle currents through the cave system. Enjoy intricate crystalline formations that line the caves, and the majestic rise and fall of stalagmites and stalactites that add to the serene opulence of nature. On several occasions, you’ll emerge into the sunlight, only to enter into another cave system. Finally, your tubing tour will end where the hike began. You’ll return your equipment and head back to Belize City and the ship. On your way back to the docks a stop will be made for lunch. Note: Participants must be at least 10 years of age and able to swim. The cave system and its waterways may cause claustrophobia in a very small percentage of guests. Wear suitable footwear for muddy, wet trails. Bring your swimsuit. less

Explore one of the most interesting Mayan sites in the region, a collection of ancient stone carvings dating from roughly 300 BCE to 100 BCE. These carvings were found at the Izapa Ruins and depict the Mayan ideas of the creation of the universe and their religious beliefs. Among the carvings is a particularly interesting and complex one called Stella 5 that depicts the Tree of Life as well as about a dozen human figures, animals and more. This complex carving has led to many different theories about its subject matter. Most theories concern the Mayan religious beliefs; however some involve speculation about visitors from other continents before the arrival of Columbus. The Tree of Life in the Mayan world is depicted as a Ceiba tree. This tall tree is commonly found in Chiapas and the Mayan jungles. It is easily identifiable by its extraordinary height, high crown and large, buttressed roots. For the Mayans, the tree represents a connection between the three realms of the universe- the underworld, earth and the heavens. Afterwards, take a short bus ride to Chocolate Discovery. Here, you’ll learn about the discovery and history of the sacred cacao bean and its importance to the Mayan people. Learn how the cocoa beans are transformed into chocolate right at the main square. Also, see a variety of local handcrafts and exotic flowers of the region. Local dances and marimba players will share their skills with lively performances. After a short stop to see the local church, you will be on your way back to your ship. Note: Guests should wear a hat and comfortable shoes. Bring eco-friendly sunscreen and bug repellent. A winding nature trail - through lush jungle in the heart of the spectacular Cranbrook Flower Forest - leads to the start of this unforgettable Canopy Tour adventure. After instruction from extensively trained guides, you’ll take a short nature walk to the first platform nestled on the hillside overlooking the treetops and jungle ‘canopy’. You begin your tour by soaring through the trees using an intricate system of harnesses, pulleys and carabineers on horizontal traverses, while gazing at the surrounding jungle until you arrive at the next cliffside platform, 45 feet above the ground. A series of traverses ranging from 105 feet to 660 feet in length will have you swinging through the Laughlands River Gorge, a giant valley carved from the surrounding mountain by ancient waters (a sparkling river still flows through it). From your bird’s eye view, you’ll survey the flora and fauna of this magnificent landscape, all while listening to the gentle sounds of nature. At different points in the tour, you’ll even get a glimpse of the miles-away Caribbean Sea and learn interesting facts about the surrounding tree and plant life from our well-informed guides. After leaving the valley, you really fly, embarking on a series of long throws - with the last traverse being 600 feet long. Here, after removing your equipment, you unwind from your exhilarating adventure with a walk through the flowering trees of Cranbrook before being transferred back to the cruise ship pier via Chukka Cove Farm. Note: Participants must be at least 8 years of age and no older than 70, and weigh no more than 264 lbs. Anything you take must be carried by you throughout the entire tour, at all times leaving both hands free. This tour is not recommended for guests with heart, neck/ back problems, mobility/balance problems or pregnant women. Tour participation is limited. less
