Take a journey into the heart of rural Chiapas for a deeper understanding of the local people and landscapes. Discover the culture that blends ancient traditions with modern necessity. Board your air-conditioned bus and travel through the Chiapas countryside to the Ejido Miguel Aleman banana farm. Your guide will acquaint you with the history of the region, its people and traditions, as well as the growing and collection process of the bananas. Then, travel into the town that owns and runs the banana co-op and visit the local community center or school; here, you’ll meet and mingle with the local children and the dedicated teachers and social workers. You’ll be able to donate a kit pack to one of the kids at the community center or local school. The kit pack contains some of their basic day to day needs. Continue to the Banana Packing Plant, where you’ll discover how the whole community works together to pack the bananas they all produce. Explore one of the most interesting Mayan sites in the region, a collection of ancient stone carvings dating from roughly 300 BCE to 100 BCE. These carvings were found at the Izapa Ruins and depict the Mayan ideas of the creation of the universe and their religious beliefs. Among the carvings is a particularly interesting and complex one called Stella 5 that depicts the Tree of Life as well as about a dozen human figures, animals and more. This complex carving has led to many different theories about its subject matter. Most theories concern the Mayan religious beliefs; however some involve speculation about visitors from other continents before the arrival of Columbus. The Tree of Life in the Mayan world is depicted as a Ceiba tree. This tall tree is commonly found in Chiapas and the Mayan jungles. It is easily identifiable by its extraordinary height, high crown and large, buttressed roots. For the Mayans, the tree represents a connection between the three realms of the universe- the underworld, earth and the heavens. Afterwards, take a short bus ride to Chocolate Discovery. Here, you’ll learn about the discovery and history of the sacred cacao bean and its importance to the Mayan people. Learn how the cocoa beans are transformed into chocolate right at the main square. Also, see a variety of local handcrafts and exotic flowers of the region. Local dances and marimba players will share their skills with lively performances. After a brief tender ride to Belize City, you’ll board a motor launch for a guided tour of the Old Belize River. Your dolphin encounter in Roatan takes place in a natural setting that resembles a Tahitian island village. The resort is laid out on two small keys, one of which is the private home to a large family of Atlantic bottlenose dolphins. You’ll travel across the resort's lagoon to Bailey’s Key where your encounter will begin with a brief orientation at a beachfront cabana. Following the orientation, you'll walk along a white sandy beach to into gin-clear, waist-deep Caribbean waters and join trained naturalists, where you'll receive a personal introduction to a resident dolphin. Enjoy a narrated city tour highlighting the history of Belize, from its founding by shipwrecked British sailors in 1683. Pass by St. John's Cathedral and other interesting sites. Just outside the city, under a Mayan thatched palapa longhouse, you’ll receive an orientation and safety briefing before boarding a 450-hp airboat. Travel to the beautiful Almond Hill Lagoon where you find the manatee grazing grounds. Upon reaching your destination, you’ll quietly drift, keeping a lookout for the docile manatees that utilize the area. Travel into the Sierra Madre Mountains towards Argovia Plantation and Estate for your authentic temazcal experience. This unique dolphin experience allows small children, ages four to eight, to get closer to dolphins than they ever dreamed possible. The program starts with a poolside introduction to a family of dolphins. Children can touch and interact with them in a hands-on session led by an experienced dolphin trainer on a shallow shelf in a specially designed maternity pool. A special feature of the Dolphin Kids program is that the youngest members of the dolphin adventure family participate alongside their mothers in this very unique family experience. Everyone will receive a friendly dolphin kiss and have a chance to pet and hug the dolphins. Parents may accompany their children to the dolphin center by paying for an observer ticket, but will not participate in the water with the dolphins. Visit the Montserrat Children’ Home, an orphanage created in 1982 by Fray Casiano de Madrid. Here, you’ll be welcomed by one of the sisters and children. You’ll meet and partake with the children as you learn about their daily duties, games and programs. These children are brought up with good values and manners which can be applied to their future adult lives. The home was operated by a group of young ladies who later became the Congregation of Missionary Sisters of the Assumption. Today, they provide comprehensive care to dozens of children from the ages of one through 18 and aim to give them the best possible quality of life. Next, visit the orchid’s farm, located in the small village of Miramar. Here, you'll learn about the orchid’s habitat, their means of cultivation, blooming and how they are prepared for export. Your guide will acquaint you with the country’s history, politics and culture while you admire the northern countryside and landscape.
