Cross the Oresund by ferry on a visit to Elsinore, Denmark. Explore Helsingor, Helsingborg’s twin city that commands the Oresund Narrows. Visit the Kronborg Castle which was the setting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Viewed from the outside, the mixture of elegant royal castle and brutal military fortress is quite imposing. Inside it is a testimony to the art, design, and royal way of life prevalent during the Renaissance and Baroque periods. See the chapel, the sole remnant of the original 16th century castle and the Knights’ Hall. Continue with a guided walk through the picturesque town which dates back to 1426 and takes its feisty character from the Danish King Erik of Pomerania.
King Erik introduced the infamous and reviled Sound Dues - a fee payable to the Danish Crown by ships passing through the sound. He also built Kronborg Castle at the narrowest point of the sound to ensure trouble free and efficient collection of the dues. By walking through the city of Elsinore, you’ll notice that much has been done to preserve the old character, and has also kept its charm and vitality. Return to Helsingborg via a panoramic ferry ride. Once back in the city, see the famous landmark 'The Keep', the remains of a 14th-century fortress, as well as the main square with its prominent neo-Gothic Town Hall.
