Then head to the geothermal fields of Krysuvik, where you'll witness the powerful jets of steam escaping from deep below the earth’s crust and purple and yellow pools of boiling mud of the solfataras. First, you will pass Perlan or 'The Pearl', a glass dome on the top of the hot-water tanks in Reykjavik. Then, you’ll continue through Reykjavik’s suburbs, towards Hafnarfjordur. From here, you’ll drive through the rugged lava fields of the Reykjanes peninsula towards the Blue Lagoon, where you will stop for approximately two hours to indulge in the waters of the lagoon itself. The Blue Lagoon owes its existence to the nearby geothermal power plant. A new facility was opened in 1999 offering a tax-free shop, café and very good changing-room facilities. The water of the Lagoon is 98° F warm, mineral-rich and reputed for its healing properties. The blue color of the water, the steam and the 13-foot high lava wall surrounding the Lagoon succeed in creating a unique atmosphere. This natural and very popular health spa is now a major attraction in the region and considered to be one of the most visited places on the island. This is not a swimming-pool for regular swimming, rather a unique relaxing bathing experience. Drive back to Reykjavik, over the barren Reykjanes peninsula dominated by old lava-flows. From the Blue Lagoon, you’ll head back to Hafnarfjordur and continue on to Reykjavik. Note: This tour is not recommended for guests with mobility problems. For hygienic purposes, you will have to take a shower without swimwear before entering the lagoon. less

This is a predominantly eco-focused tour that circles the active central volcano Hengill, which is located just a few kilometers from Iceland’s capital city of Reykjavik. Hengill produces impressive amounts of energy by way of hydro and geothermal power – both of which are utilized to provide the capital and nearby municipalities with plentiful supplies of hot water and electricity. Stop at the geothermal plant of Hellisheidi where you’ll learn about geosciences, geothermal technology, the environment and the history of the area. Then, continue to the town of Hveragerdi located on top of an old magma chamber which accounts for the abundance of hot springs that bubble and hiss all around this unique little community. Take a short scenic drive passing by the town’s trademark greenhouses, and the new hot spring area; which broke through the earth’s surface following a dramatic earthquake in 2008. Next, pay a short visit to the geothermal area in the center of the town. After some refreshments, pass by the hydropower station Ljóssafoss, which has been in operation since 1937. Head out to the UNESCO site of Thingvellir. As you approach Thingvellir, cross the neovolcanic rift zone that slices through Iceland from northeast to southwest. Pause at the viewpoint to soak up a little of the nation’s history: here is where the world’s first parliament was formed in 930. Finally, pass by Iceland’s largest natural lake, Thingvallavatn, to the view point located on the lower flanks of the volcano. The drive back to Reykjavik takes us through a lunar-like landscape of volcanic phenomena and other geological wonders. Note: Participants under 12 years of age must be accompanied by an adult. Most venues are not wheelchair accessible. The tour might be run in reverse order to avoid congestion at the main sites. Please exercise caution when exploring hot spring areas and their surroundings. Wear comfortable shoes with a non slip sole, and a waterproof outer layer is recommended. less

Iceland is not only famous for its spectacular landscapes, history and culture - its horses have also been the subject of much praise and attention. In the earlier days, they were romantically nicknamed 'the most useful servant' being the most common subject for Icelandic poets through the ages. Tough, strong animals, they bore the brunt of a long and arduous working day. They were also the only means of transport for both people and goods. Bred for the harsh elements, in an environment where only the strong survive, the present day stock is the result of their ancestors having survived the rigors of extreme weather conditions and volcanic petulance. There is an age old law forbidding the import of horses - and any horse leaving Iceland can never return. This means the present day horses in Iceland are the same race as those of the Viking Age. Their average height is only 13 hands but they are hardy and sure footed, friendly and docile with a flowing mane. The Icelandic horse has many characteristics unique unto itself, the most obvious being its ability to perform five gaits. These gaits are the 'fet', the walk or step, the 'brokk' or trot, the 'tölt', which is a faster type of walk, the 'skeid' or the pace and the 'stökk,' or gallop. Why not try for yourself? Included is the transfer to the Ishestar riding center. You’ll put on an overall, riding helmet, boots and gloves. After a short introduction to the horses and staff, your adventurous ride starts from the Íshestar Riding Center into the lava fields surrounding Mt. Helgafell volcano, or to Lake Hvaleyrarvatn and into the beautiful surrounding area. The choice of the riding path will depend on the weather and conditions of the path.
