Behold the bizarre geological formations and cathedral-like vault in the Canelobre Caves and then discover the charms of Busot by joining in a scavenger hunt known as a gymkhana. After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a leisurely drive inland, following a circuitous route through the arid countryside and on to the Canelobre Caves. The Arabs supposedly discovered the caves in the 10th century, but they weren’t explored until 1,000 years later. As you meander the caves’ winding paths, you will see eerily illuminated stalactites and stalagmites in shapes as whimsical as a jellyfish and as common as waterfalls. The most dramatic stalagmite is the namesake Canelobre, a chandelier-like column that rises more than 80 feet from the cavern floor.

You will next visit Busot, a lovely village surrounded by mountains. As a fun alternative to a traditional walking tour, you will instead discover the attractions of Busot by participating in a gymkhana, an interactive game much like a scavenger hunt. Off you will go with a map of the city in hand. At each destination, you will answer a question that you could only know by visiting the site. It will be great fun as you race between attractions such as the Museum of Ethnic Music and the Saint Lawrence Martyr Parish. Finish in first place, and you will receive a prize that recognizes your sense of adventure and brilliant sleuthing.

Browse one of the most vibrant markets in Alicante, where you will see an array of fruits, vegetables and seafood that will likely be ingredients on the tapas that you will enjoy later. After walking from the pier, you will soon arrive at the Central Market, a magnificent modernist-inspired building that holds nearly 300 stalls of every imaginable gastronomic offering. Almost all of the products are locally sourced, so they truly represent the ingredients found in the regional cuisine. Garden-fresh produce, seafood on ice, exotic spices, fragrant herbs—they are all here in perhaps Alicante’s most popular market place.

After meandering through the stalls, interacting with the vendors and sampling some of the delicacies, you will begin a tapas tour. These small-plate snacks will reflect the local cuisine and contain the absolute freshest, seasonal ingredients. Many of the offerings may be unexpected, as Alicante has become a foodie paradise and has attracted inventive chefs from throughout Europe. Because of Alicante’s prime location on the Mediterranean, tapas with seafood such as tuna belly and succulent red prawns are enormously popular.

Ride through historical Alicante in the comfort of a trolley train, admiring the architectural treasures and pausing every so often for photos in the most scenic squares downtown.

After departing from the pier, you will ride the trolley train to the center of Alicante, the vibrant capital of the province of the same name. Founded by the Romans as Lucentum or “The City of Light,” Alicante was repeated attacked by sea until defensive walls were built in medieval times. Today, remnants of the city’s early architecture still remain, especially in the Old Quarter and other areas that you will see from the comfort of the trolley train.

Be sure to look high above the city atop Benacantil Mountain, where you will spot the seemingly impenetrable Santa Barbara Castle, which the Moors built in the 10th century. Casa Carbonell is another architectural gem that dominates the port. Built in 1925 as a residence for a wealthy textile merchant, the elegant marble and sandstone building has since been divided up into luxury apartments, offices, exquisite shops and fine restaurants.

You will also pass Canalejas Park, a late 19th-century urban oasis whose gates are adorned with sculptures of lions and dogs. Massive, more than 100-year-old ficus trees shade the park’s interior and provide a welcome setting. You will pause for photos at nearby Canlejas Square, as well as Luceros Square and Puerta del Mar Square in the heart of the city before returning to the pier.

Walk through the Roman ruins in and around Alicante and enjoy a selection of signature tapas at a beachfront restaurant. Founded by the Romans as Lucentum or “The City of Light,” Alicante is full of excavated ruins that reveal what life was like during that period. To enhance your understanding of the area in Roman times, reconstructions of ancient structures have been mixed in with the ruins. You will also see how the Romans and the earlier Phoenicians farmed fish and held them in tanks that still exist near Almadraba Beach. Almadraba refers to an ancient fishing technique with nets that continues today. Much of the seafood caught locally ends up in tapas, the small-plate snacks that are synonymous with Spain. You will sample several popular tapas at the restaurant Es Suquet in the San Juan Beach area. The ingredients will be chosen from what’s freshest that day, which is often red prawns and eel.

    HIGHLIGHTS:
    • Wander among the Roman ruins in Alicante, which the Romans called Lucentum. • See how the Romans farmed fish and held them in seaside tanks that still exist. • Sample a selection of tapas made with fresh local ingredients that may include seafood.

    HELPFUL HINTS:

After tasting the golden dessert, you will understand why it’s so popular. Back in Alicante, you will visit the Monastery of Santa Faz, which is renowned for holding a piece of fabric that Saint Veronica is said to have used to wipe Jesus’ face on the way to his crucifixion. A hearty lunch of fideuà at Poniente restaurant follows.

Explore Elche and enjoy the serene beauty of its palm groves, one of the largest in the world and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Priest’s Garden, housing a wide variety of tropical plants and ponds arranged to create an atmosphere of tranquility and repose. An orientation drive through the city of Alicante complements your day.

Enjoy a short panoramic drive through the city of Alicante, where you’ll admire the “Paseo del Puerto”, a marbled mosaic avenue imitating sea waves, and the Luceros square, an impressive fountain with sculptures of horses.

The municipality of Elche has the highest concentration of palm trees in Europe, and your drive into town takes you through part of the palm forest and groves to visit the enchanting Priest’s Garden. Admire the abundant variety of Mediterranean plant species. A visitor’s favorite is the rock garden, with a superb collection of cacti and succulents. The highlight of the garden is a splendid eight-trunk Imperial Palm; a botanical rarity that defies the laws of biology. Stroll along the winding pathways and ponds that add a touch of freshness and the sound of peace and quiet to the garden. Visit the Basilica of St. Mary, built over an old mosque according to the design of Saint Nicolas Church in Alicante and is an excellent example of Valencian Baroque from the 18th century.

Stroll through the Municipal Park and admire the splendid palm trees, most of them date palms. The park is not just a space for enjoyment, but the oxygenizing vegetation lung in the heart of the city. Although the date palm reigns supreme here, you’ll find a huge variety of other plants such as bougainvillea, fig trees, araucarias, magnolias, bananas and much more. As Muslims occupied this area for centuries, the fountains and main lake, placed in the heart of the park, are all inspired in Arabic architectural style. Enjoy some time to do some shopping or simply relax and admire the surroundings.

Discover the popular tourist town of Guadalest, an ancient military stronghold that sits perched at the top of a granite mountain. A scenic 90-minute drive takes you past picturesque villages and winding roads surrounded by spectacular landscapes. The picture-postcard site of the free-standing bell tower and the tunnel that provides access to the old center of Castell de Guadalest greet you on arrival. Both are nestled in a dramatic granite mountaintop setting that leaves a lasting impression.

Follow your guide on a walk through the quaint village streets. The old urban center is located on the top of an outcrop, which is only accessed via a tunnel hollowed into the side of the rock. The area at the top of the rock includes the bell tower, Saint Josep Castle and the recently restored Orduña House which you will visit.

The Orduña House was built after the great earthquake that demolished much of the original housing in Guadalest. One half of the house is supported by the rock while the other half occupies areas over the chapels of the adjoining church. You’ll be surprised to find a house of such greatness in this remote and rural setting. Enjoy some free time to further explore the village on your own the many shops offering a great variety of crafts.
