Make the journey up to the summit of the dormant Mauna Kea volcano for an exhilarating experience and breathtaking views above the clouds. Your drive starts at sea level and climbs up almost 14,000 feet in two hours. This is the world’s tallest mountain, measuring 32,000 feet from its underwater base to its summit at 13,796 feet above sea level.

Due to the dry, cloud-free atmosphere and distance from city lights, it hosts the world’s largest astronomical site. Currently there are 13 powerful telescopes here, operated by astronomers from 11 countries.

You’ll also stop at the Visitor Information Center in the Onizuka facility at 9,200 feet, so that you can adjust to the altitude. The Center was built to allow astronomers and technicians to acclimatize before beginning their work at the summit.

Need to Know:

Note: Participants must be at least 16 years of age. This tour is not recommended for pregnant women, persons suffering from respiratory disorders or heart problems. Oxygen is carried for emergencies and warm parkas are provided, as the weather at the summit may be quite cold. In rare cases where the summit is closed due to sudden storms, an alternate will be provided. A light lunch is included.
