    Historic Kona

    Kona, Hawaii

    Duration 3 1/2 hrs

Gain an understanding of the Big Island’s history through attractions that highlight the life of the early Hawaiians and the influence of Catholic missionaries. Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park will offer a glimpse into the early culture, as it was a place of refuge for those that had violated the sacred laws known as kapu. There, you will see a temple where criminals could be absolved of their transgressions and safely return to society. To complement the experience, you will visit the 19th-century Painted Church. Its interior features frescoes and murals of biblical scenes that a Belgian priest painted to teach the islanders Catholicism. The missionaries were also instrumental in dismantling the harsh kapu laws. It is an excellent setting to enjoy a cup of fresh-brewed Kona coffee.

    Haleakala Crater

    Kahului, Maui

    Duration 4 hrs

Check out Maui’s massive Haleakala volcano from bottom to top, as you journey from sea level to the summit to view spectacular island scenery and the immense crater of volcanic rock. You can catch a glimpse of Haleakala, Maui’s massive dormant volcano, from almost any point on the island, but you will go all the way to the top on this scenic journey – from sea level to 10,000 feet. At the summit is a vast crater seven and a half miles long by two and a half miles wide, and 3,000 feet deep. It last erupted in 1790 and has slumbered ever since, though that does not mean it won’t one day wake up. The Hawaiians revere it as a sacred site, and tell tales of Pele, Goddess of Fire and Volcanos.

The views from the top are magnificent. If the day is clear, you may even make out two other towering peaks – Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea on the Big Island. From the crater’s rim, you'll be able to appreciate first hand the unique beauty of this imposing caldera with its interesting mix of volcanic rock and plant life, some of which, like the silversword plant, is found only in Hawaii's volcanic craters.

    Need to Know:

Note: This tour is not recommended for guests with respiratory or heart problems. We recommend you bring a sweater as temperatures range between 40-65 degrees Fahrenheit at the crater's top. Tour is not available to guests who utilize a wheelchair. Additionally, there is no storage available for walker/wheelchair. The Land Of Frozen Fire

    Hilo, Hawaii

    Duration 4 hrs

Discover the power of Madame Pele through recent history on this tour highlighting the stark beauty of Hawaii Island. See how volcanoes like Kilauea create both destruction and renewal, which is spectacularly on display in the lower east rift zone that experienced the 2014 and 2018 eruptions firsthand. First stop is Kalapana, an ancient Hawaiian fishing village which today has been completely reshaped by lava. Stop at one of Kalapana's most iconic landmarks, the Star of the Sea Painted Church, and hear about the heroic efforts to pick up and move this beloved decommissioned church out of the line of the lava flows not once, but twice! Next stop is another historic location, Kapoho town. First destroyed by lava in 1960 and slowly rebuilt over the decades only to be destroyed again in 2018. More than 700 homes were destroyed, Green Lake was completely filled in with molten rock, and the coastline was moved more than a mile further obliterating the famed Kapoho Tide Pools and Champagne Pond. Drive up to Lava Tree State Monument where your guide will explain the iconic trees on display here in their natural forest. Finally make a quick stop on the way back to the port to shop for Hawaiian macadamia nuts, Kona coffee, local crafts and more.

Pearl Harbor & Honolulu City (Airport Drop Off)

    Honolulu, Oahu

    Duration 6 hrs

Explore Honolulu’s highlights – from Pearl Harbor and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific to Hawaii’s first Christian church, and Iolani Palace and Washington Place, both former residences of the Hawaiian monarchy.

Pearl Harbor is one of Hawaii’s best-known landmarks and the scene of the devastating aerial attack by Japan that drove the U.S. into WWII. The Pearl Harbor Visitor's center exhibit galleries bring visitors closer to the sights and sounds of the events leading up to the attack on Oahu and its aftermath. These galleries display personal memorabilia, dramatic photographs, artifacts of the battle, and other exhibits.

In central Honolulu stand face to face with the larger-than-life statue of King Kamehameha I, the leader who united the Hawaiian Islands into one royal kingdom. Just across the street you’ll see the Iolani Palace, residence of Hawaii's last two monarchs. European in design, it boasted Hawaii’s first electric lights, flush toilets and internal phone system. Also nearby is Kawaiahao Church, Hawaii's first Christian house of worship, built of coral slabs from the offshore reefs.

At the heart of the downtown historic district you will notice the elegant Washington Place, now a museum, and once home to Liliuokalani, Hawaii’s last queen. Drive through the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, in the extinct volcanic crater known as the Punchbowl. It is the final resting place of some 53,000 veterans who lost their lives in 20th century wars, including those who died during the attack on Pearl Harbor. Enjoy panoramic city views on your drive to the airport.

    Duration 4 1/2 hrs

Enjoy an immersion into the history and culture of Hakodate through landmarks that reveal how the city transitioned from its 19th-century isolationist policies.

George Inlet Lodge Crab Cake Expedition

    Ketchikan (Ward Cove), Alaska

    Duration 3 hrs

    OVERVIEW

Travel along a wonderfully scenic highway to the historical George Inlet Lodge, where a chef will demonstrate how best to prepare crab cakes, which you will later enjoy for lunch. The road to the lodge winds through the wilds of Revillagigedo Island and passes an old sawmill and several salmon canneries that will offer a glimpse into the area’s past. Once you reach the waterfront lodge – which was originally a cannery bunkhouse – the attention will turn to food, especially seafood caught in the chilly depths of the surrounding sea. While the chef prepares your crab cakes according to a classic local recipe and recounts entertaining stories about Alaskan fishing and crabbing, you will be served a garden-fresh salad and half a Dungeness crab as an appetizer. The crab cakes will be served hot off the griddle and followed by a slice of creamy cheesecake topped with blueberries, another Alaska specialty.
