Hike through the rainforest in Huleia National Wildlife Refuge to two spectacular waterfalls, where you may swim in the refreshing pools below. The refuge is closed to the public to protect the endangered species, but you will enjoy special access to this natural wonderland. As you follow a descending trail, the guide will describe the lush flora, which may include wild coffee, lobster claw heliconia and hau trees, the branches of which Hawaiians once used to make outrigger floats. Named for its stand of graceful bamboo, Bamboo Falls is the smaller of the cascades, while Papakolea Falls plummets down more than 60 feet. Both are breathtaking. Feel free to swim, stand under the waterfalls for a natural massage or simply relax on the rocky shore and behold nature’s beauty. Later, you will gaze out over Menehune Fish Pond, home to dozens of avian species such as the nēnē, Hawaii’s state bird.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Behold two little-known waterfalls in Huleia National Wildlife Refuge.
    • Swim in the pools below the cascades or simply enjoy the beautiful peaceful settings.
    • Learn about the surrounding flora and fauna, much of it indigenous and endangered.
    • Admire nearby natural areas such as the Menehune Fish Pond.

    HELPFUL HINTS

Live the thrill of gliding through the top of a rich rain forest canopy along a series of eight zip-lines with three aerial bridges suspended between tall spruce, hemlock and cedar trees, bordering the magnificent Tongass National Forest. This major rain forest reserve embraces one of Alaska’s richest salmon spawning streams and a pristine intertidal estuary. Abundant wildlife habitat here includes a high concentration of bald eagles, black bears and a variety of other species. At Herring Cove, an all-terrain custom 4x4 Unimog will transport you up a steep rain forest hillside to the canopy chalet. Professionally trained guides will outfit you with the state-of-the-art safety equipment and provide a detailed orientation before you mount the first platform. Your rain forest canopy challenge features a ‘flight’ over eight zip-lines. Your guide will progressively ease you into the forest canopy along cables ranging from a short 100 feet up to 750 feet. Eagles and bears are often seen from the platforms. Cross three hanging bridges offering breathtaking views of the forest below. You will be up to 135 feet above the forest floor. Throughout this adventure, you are surrounded by the sights and sounds of the rain forest wildlife pre-serve. The final zip-line emerges from the rain forest and transports you over lush grassy wetlands to a viewing tower, 55 feet above where you will rappel to the ground. Time permitting, grab a freshly brewed coffee or a cold Alaskan beer and explore our Tsimshian totem park, see a master carver working, check out our historic sawmill and watch our local blacksmiths at work. Stop by the General Store to see photos taken during your zip-line experience and to shop for mementos of your Alaska adventure. Your excursion concludes with a scenic drive back to the ship.

    Moosehead Brewery

Moosehead is an award-winning brewery, and has won numerous awards over the years, including most recently at the Canadian Brewing Awards. Three separate small batch craft beers took home a gold, silver and bronze!

Sample several tasty beers at Moosehead, the country’s last major Canadian-owned brewery, and then watch the extraordinary tidal phenomenon known as the Reversing Rapids.

After departing from the pier, you will begin a brief but informative tour of Saint John, Canada’s first incorporated city. Although the Great Fire of 1877 destroyed much of Saint John, the city was beautifully rebuilt with stone and brick following that conflagration.

You will then arrive at Moosehead Brewery which was owned by the Oland family that started Moosehead, one of the most revered brands of beer in Canada. While touring the modernized Moosehead facility, you will watch the beer being brewed, bottled and shipped. You will also tour and taste in the new small batch brewer located onsite. The process is as fascinating as the company’s 150-year history.

Moosehead produces a variety of beers, several of which you will sample. You may be served the signature golden lager, a pale ale, a lime-flavored beer, or Cracked Canoe, a light but full-bodied lager. The tastes reflect the local ingredients and show the diversity of product.

Continuing on, you will soon arrive at Wolastoq, a park whose name means “beautiful river” in the language of the Maliseet people that once lived here. The views will be spectacular, especially of the Reversing Rapids, a natural phenomenon created during high tide, when the Bay of Fundy rises 14 feet higher than the Saint John River, reversing its flow. You will also see a wood carving of famed brewer George Oland before returning to the pier.
