Mingle with the locals at Rotterdam’s only microbrewery and the only covered food market in the Netherlands. On the drive there, you will notice that few historical buildings remain, as Rotterdam was nearly leveled in World War II. Rotterdam now features wide boulevards, modern architecture and separate districts for banking and shopping. Delfshaven is one of the few areas that miraculously survived the wartime bombing, and there you will find De Pelgrim, the only microbrewery in town. Following an enlightening tour of the facility and the artisan brewing method, you will sample a selection of beers. For another glimpse into local life, you will head for the Markthal, the first covered food market in the Netherlands. As interesting as it will be to browse the stalls, the most visually arresting sight is on the ceiling. It is covered with an original mural with images of oversized produce and flowers that pay homage to the 17th-century Dutch masters.
