Relive the history of King Shaka, King of the Zulus, during this enriching visit to the tribal village of Shakaland.

Journey through Empangeni en route to Shakaland, the location where the movie Shaka Zulu was filmed. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your Zulu guide and share welcome refreshments before being invited to relive the momentous and turbulent days of King Shaka, a revered early 19th-century Zulu ruler. During your walking tour through the Zulu village, see a variety of displays, including women doing beadwork, weaving mats, sculpting pottery, baking bread and brewing beer. You’ll also watch the men make a spear and shield as well as build a beehive-style grass hut.

Enter the chief’s hut to observe Zulu dancers performing rapturous rhythmic drum dances and witness a ritual done by the traditional healer, or sangoma, followed by a short audio-visual presentation and some time at your leisure to browse the village’s enticing curio shops. Delight in a traditional Zulu buffet lunch at the Kwabonamanzi restaurant overlooking the Umhlatuze Lake, a satisfying finale to your fascinating outing.

Phinda Private Game Reserve encompasses an impressive 56,800 acres of prime wilderness in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Showcasing one of the continent's finest game-viewing experiences, Phinda features Africa's wildlife at its best. Often described as the "Seven Worlds of Wonder," with its seven distinct habitats, Phinda is home to an abundance of wildlife from the largest lion to the smallest antelope. This fully inclusive program promises to be an unforgettable experience.

    DAY 1

Depart Richards Bay harbor and drive approximately 2.5 hours to the Phinda Private Game Reserve.

Upon arriving at the Phinda Mountain Lodge, you will enjoy a welcome drink while checking in to the hotel. Afterwards, you will have time to settle into your accommodations before lunch and then departing on an afternoon game drive. The suites at Mountain Lodge each have their own private veranda, outdoor shower and plunge pool allowing you to savor the outdoors and fresh mountain air.

Late afternoon is one of the prime times to view wildlife, as it’s cooler and the animals are more active. While there is no telling what you will observe, the reserve is home to countless animals, including the Big Five: elephant, lion, leopard, rhinoceros and Cape buffalo. Herds of elephants are often seen meandering through the fever tree forests, while white rhinoceroses are usually found grazing on the grassland.

the game drive, sundowners and light snacks will be served at a clearing in the bush, where you might see nocturnal wildlife. In time, you will return to the lodge for dinner and to spend the evening.

    DAY 2
The day begins with an early-morning wakeup call, followed by tea, coffee and biscuits in the lounge. This too is an ideal time for wildlife viewing. As before, you will head into the bush in an open-topped 4x4 vehicle, accompanied by knowledgeable rangers and trackers who are skilled at pointing out the various animals.

You may catch sight of a shy red duiker grazing on fallen leaves and fruit. The elegant nyala antelope is seen even more frequently, as Phinda boasts one of the highest densities of the species. The male nyala has a dark brown coat, yellow legs and shaggy mane, making it particularly spectacular. The female nyala features a less flashy, but no less beautiful chestnut coat. Of course, the Big Five always command attention and they are abundant.

Following your game drive, you will return to the lodge for breakfast, followed by leisure time throughout the day to perhaps take a nap or maybe relax around the rim flow pool that follows the natural curves of the mountain, providing impressive views of the Lebombo foothills. Enjoy an in-room massage treatment or participate in one of the optional activities provided by the lodge. Optional activities may include bush walks, cultural excursions, scuba safaris and specialist safaris such as birding, photographic, tracking, luxury walking safaris (additional expenses may apply and space must be reserved at the lodge)

Lunch and afternoon tea are included before meeting for your evening game drive.

Following the game drive, sundowners and light snacks will be served at a clearing in the bush, where you might see nocturnal wildlife. In time, you will return to the Phinda Mountain Lodge for dinner and to spend the evening.

    DAY 3
After breakfast and check-out formalities, transfer to the main entrance where you will board a vehicle for your road transfer to Durban’s King Shaka International airport. The travelling time is approximately 4.5 hours. A box lunch will be provided for the drive.

Arriving at Durban’s airport you will check-in for your flight to Port Elizabeth.
Upon arrival at Port Elizabeth Airport you will be met and transferred by road to the Port Elizabeth Harbor where you will re-embark the ship.
