    OVERVIEW

Cruise the pristine waters off Sitka in search of marine life such as sea otters while listening to a naturalist elaborate on the most intriguing characteristics of the species. You may settle into a comfortable seat in the boat’s main cabin or remain topside on the observation deck. Either way, you will enjoy an uninterrupted view of the sea. As you scan the waters for marine life, the naturalist will describe how humpback whales feed here in the summer and how animals such as sea otters now thrive. The animals were nearly extinct due to aggressive fur hunting in the early 1800s, and their comeback is a wonderful success story. Other creatures commonly spotted include sea lions, porpoise, harbor seals and a huge variety of seabirds. Puffins are particularly easy to identify because of their bright orange beaks.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Scan the waters off Sitka for marine life such as whales and sea otters.
    • Look along the shore for brown bears and skyward for bald eagles.
    • Listen to the naturalist describe the animals’ unusual habits and habitats.

Enjoy a comprehensive tour of the Aomori Prefecture, taking in landmarks that include a castle, a museum of parade floats, a district devoted to Zen temples and a beloved garden.

Settle in for a scenic drive to Hirosaki Castle, a fortification that Lord Tsugaru built when he governed this region in the early 17th century. It is a magnificent seemingly impenetrable structure, as it sits atop a sloped stone wall surrounded by fortified moats. The original castle grounds are now a sprawling park dotted with thousands of cherry trees that bloom in the spring.

Nearby, you will find Tsugara Nebuta Village, a museum devoted to the Nebuta summer festival in Hirosaki, during which enormous floats depicting Japanese gods, historical figures and mythological beings are paraded through the streets. The museum also includes exhibits of cultural items such as three-string shamisen musical instruments, local handicrafts and antique toys.

Browsing the museum will be a visually delightful experience that you will not soon forget. You will also have some time to enjoy some time at a Japanese garden located next to the museum building.

Following lunch, you visit Zenringai, a district of Soto sect Zen temples. Incredibly, nearly three dozen of them line one street. The region’s 17th-century lord ordered the bulk of them to be moved here to help fortify the area.

Having completed your visits, your coach will take you back to the pier.

Enjoy an immersion into the history and culture of Hakodate through landmarks that reveal how the city transitioned from its 19th-century isolationist policies.

Settle in for an orientation drive around Hakodate, one of the first ports that opened to foreign trade following Japan’s period of self-isolation, which ended with the Kanagawa Treaty of 1854. Hakodate has grown to become the island’s third largest city, even though its land is somewhat limited by mountains and the sea.

In time, you will arrive in Motomachi, the district at the foot of the mountains where most foreigners lived after Hakodate was opened to the west. You’ll enjoy approximately 1 hour of free time here, to explore on your own or do some shopping. As you stroll Motomachi’s streets, you can’t help but notice the distinct styles of architecture. Highlights include a Russian Orthodox church and the former British consulate.

Visit Goryokaku, an urban park dominated by a 350-foot-high observation tower. Then, a brief walk takes you to the Hakodate magistrate’s office, a reproduction of the original, which was constructed using traditional methods and materials. Once the diplomatic center of the region, the office holds a collection of revealing artifacts that detail the cultural evolution of Hakodate. Remove your shoes, in keeping with Japanese custom, and step inside the building to view the historical exhibits.

Enjoy the unrivaled charm of Nara and Osaka, two of Japan's most historic cities, on this full-day tour.

It’s a scenic 90-minute drive to Nara, the oldest capital of Japan (710-784), and the cradle of Japanese arts, literature and crafts with temples and shrines that pre-date those found in Kyoto. Modeled after Changan, capital of Tang Dynasty China, the exquisite city of Nara is home to eight World Heritage Sites, and numerous art and architectural relics classified as National Treasures and Important Cultural Assets by the Japanese government.

Visit the incredible Todaiji Temple, founded in 752, and best known for its Daibutsu, a colossal statue sitting 49 feet tall, making it the world's largest Buddha statue. The eighth century statue is housed in an all-wood building, the Daibutsu-den, considered the largest wooden building in the world. Stroll through Nara Park, commonly referred to as Deer Park. The tranquil park covers 1,295 acres of woodland and is home to over 1,000 free roaming deer. Considered messengers of the gods in the Shinto religion, Nara's deer are a symbol of the city and are designated a National Natural Monument. Also visit Kasuga Taisha Shrine.

Following lunch at a nearby restaurant, you'll drive to Osaka, with a stop to visit the imposing Osaka Castle. One of Japan's most famous castles, it has massive stone foundations, wing-tipped roofs with gilded decorations.

Discover the gracious spirit of Old Japan on this full-day tour to three of Kyoto's most alluring sites. The imperial capital of Japan for over a thousand years, Kyoto is the cultural and artistic heart of the nation, best known for its Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines, beautiful gardens and historically priceless buildings.

Following an approximately 90-minute scenic drive to Kyoto, you arrive at the magnificent Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), Kyoto's world-renowned and most photographed temple and garden. Built in 1394, the original Kinkakuji was a retirement villa for a former Shogun. The three-story Chinese-influenced Golden Pavilion has delicately curving roofs, with the walls and eaves of the second and third stories covered in shimmering gold leaf.

After lunch at a local restaurant, you'll visit Nijo Castle, with its immense walls and moat. Completed in 1603, the castle is famous for its nightingale floors, designed to detect the footsteps of ninja assassins and warn the residents of invaders. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Nijo Castle is one of the world's great historical buildings.

Another stop in your tour is Sanjusangendo, famous for its 1,001 12th-century statues of the Buddhist deity Kannon, the Goddess of Mercy. Sanjusangendo translates to hall with 33 bays and the 33 alcoves display 1,000 awe-inspiring statues and a single gigantic sitting image of Kannon. Carved from Japanese cypress and painted with gold leaf, each of the multi-armed figures stands five and a half feet tall, and has subtle differences in expression and accoutrements, testimony to the skill and originality of the Momoyama wood carvers.

    OVERVIEW

Enjoy a close-up look at three populations of Alaskan bears that have been rescued and are being rehabilitated so that they can live long, fulfilling lives. The venue for this immersion into the iconic bears of Alaska is the Fortress of the Bear, a rescue center that opened in 2007. Since that time, the center has cared for dozens of young bears and relocated them into caring environments. Circumstances prevent the bears from being released back into the wild. You can observe the brown and black bears from just 25 feet away, a rare opportunity that will make the experience even more meaningful. The naturalists will explain how the bears were rescued, their personality traits and their daily routines, one of the highlights being feeding time. Their seasonal diets include everything from fish and fruit to peanut butter and honey. As you will see, the brown bears are noticeably larger than the black bears.

    HIGHLIGHTS

The custom-designed wheeled summer sleds comfortably seat six people, with the musher in charge of steering the team from the back of the sled. As you sit back and enjoy the ride, you'll witness the sheer determination and spirit of the dogs as they pull you along the trail. Back at the kennel, you will see how the dogs are cared for, perhaps talk with the camp’s veterinarian and play with a retired sled dog. Alaskan huskies are known for their great endurance, power and intelligence. You can’t help but be awed in their presence. OVERVIEW

Cruise through the island-dotted waters off Sitka in an expedition-style vessel while looking for iconic Alaskan wildlife. The vessel is open-air to offer maximum viewing opportunities and has a shallow draft so it can easily navigate waters that other boats can’t reach. There is no better way to observe animals in their natural habitats without disturbing Alaska’s delicate ecosystems. Although the sightings vary from day to day, you can expect to see harbor seals, sea lions and playful sea otters, the smallest of all marine mammals. Sea otters don’t have blubber; instead, they are covered with two layers of exceptionally thick fur, which keep them warm. You may also spot brown bears along the shore and eagles overhead.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Look for a variety of wildlife while cruising off Sitka in an Demaree Inflatable Boat (DIB).
    • Keep an eye out for marine mammals such as seals, sea lions and sea otters.
    • Be sure to look overhead for bald eagles and on land for bears.
    • Cruise into waters off limits to other boats that typically have deeper drafts.

    OVERVIEW

Enjoy an immensely scenic and highly entertaining drive through Victoria, the compact capital of British Columbia with a distinctly Canadian flavor. You will hit the highlights, but none so broadly illuminating as a stop atop Mount Tolmie for a sweeping 360 degree view of the city. Major attractions in the heart of Victoria include the grand Parliament complex along the Inner Harbor, the British-influenced Empress Hotel, the University of Victoria and Canada’s oldest Chinatown, which was settled by the 19th-century Chinese immigrants that arrived to build the railways and join the gold rush. Still, few institutions are more well-known in Victoria than Tim Hortons, where you will pause for a cup of its signature coffee. Try some Timbits. By tour’s end, you will know more about Victoria than you ever imagined as you will play trivia along the way and receive a Canadian goodie bag.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Gain an overall perspective of Victoria on a panoramic drive through the downtown.
    • Pass landmarks such as the Parliament complex, Chinatown and the Empress Hotel.
    • Enjoy a cup of coffee and 4 small Timbits, at Tim Hortons, a downtown institution.
    • Play Canadian trivia for prizes during the drive and receive a Canadian goodie bag.

In time, you will head for the center’s private dining room to sample a piece of succulent salmon grilled to perfection. Later, you will pause for photos of the University of Alaska Southeast, which overlooks Sitka harbor and channel.
