There is no better way to experience Alaska’s rugged terrain than by driving an ATV (All-Terrain Vehicle) through the forests and mountains on Chichagof Island. Following a short orientation on how best to operate an ATV in the Alaskan wilderness, you will set off on your outdoor adventure. The entire island (America’s fifth largest) lies within the limits of the 17-million-acre Tongass National Forest, which has the distinction of being America’s largest national forest. The terrain ranges from seaside estuaries to alpine mountain peaks, and you will have plenty of chances to stop and view the gorgeous scenery. With its remote location and limited accessibility, Chichagof is home to some of the animals most often associated with Alaska. In fact, the island has the world’s largest brown bear population, estimated to be three bears per square mile. You might also see bald eagles soaring above, land otters, Sitka black-tail deer and red squirrels.

Spend hours exploring the wilds and roads less traveled on Chichagof Island in a Jeep Wrangler designed for outdoor adventure. You will travel along old logging roads that were built to harvest valuable timber such as hemlock, spruce and cedar trees. The route will cut through some of the most spectacular, undeveloped countryside in Alaska. The fifth largest island in the United States, Chichagof lies within the limits of the 17-million-acre Tongass National Forest, America’s largest national forest. OVERVIEW

Experience the magic of Point Adolphus first thing in the morning! Departing directly from the pier as soon as your ship docks, this is the first adventure of the day, leaving you with plenty of free time afterwards to explore the wonders of Icy Strait Point. Point Adolphus is noted for having the highest concentration of humpback whales in the Alaskan panhandle, so it is highly likely that you will see these behemoths feasting on teeny crustaceans known as krill and on small schooling fishes. It is quite the spectacle to watch a 50-foot-long, 35-ton humpback whale waving its fluke up and down before diving to feed and fatten up for its winter migration south. You may also spot them bubble-feeding, a group effort in which several whales work together to drive fish into a mass to easily consume them in great quantities. The onboard naturalist will describe the behavior and characteristics of the whales and the other marine life that inhabits these waters. They include Dall’s porpoises, Stellar sea lions, harbor seals and orca whales.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Look for humpback whales in the waters off Point Adolphus in the early morning.
    • Watch for whales breaching the water’s surface before diving to feed.
    • Keep an eye out for other marine life such as orca whales, porpoises and sea lions.
    • Learn fascinating facts about the marine life from the onboard naturalist.

    OVERVIEW

Your journey begins with a narrated tour of downtown Juneau, highlighting the city’s landmarks and rich cultural past as you head towards the Mendenhall Valley. Your first stop is the historic Brotherhood Bridge, where you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the valley and, weather permitting, the Mendenhall Glacier off in the distance. This bridge holds significant cultural and historical importance, symbolizing the bridging of the gap between Native and Non-Native communities and overcoming racial tensions. Adorned with ten bronze medallions featuring the Alaska Native Brotherhood (ANB) crest, sculpted by Roy Peratrovich Jr. in honor of the ANB’s 50th anniversary, the bridge depicts the two great Tlingit moieties—Eagle and Raven—emphasizing the ANB’s foundational role in their shared heritage. Afterward your drive takes you to Juneau's Macaulay Salmon Hatchery and Visitor Center. There you will learn the value of ocean ranching to Juneau's commercial and sport fishing industries and the hatchery's role in keeping the area salmon population at sustainable levels.

From your window seat on the DeHavilland floatplane, you will look down on the natural beauty of the seemingly endless Tongass National Forest. The sights will be breathtaking as the plane flies over a sheltered fjords and lands in the water just off Traitor’s Cove, where you will meet a naturalist guide that is especially knowledgeable about black bears. Bears typically gather there to feast on the salmon as they make their way upstream. It can be quite the sight to see a salmon leap into the air only to be caught in the mouth off an awaiting bear. Chances are, you will also see bald eagles feeding on the scraps that the bears leave behind.

Explore the avian diversity of Hoonah’s lush temperate rainforest and its surrounding tidal waters with a local expert. Your guide will show you the best places to look for birds such as ducks, gulls and bald eagles, starting with the Port Frederick area. Because the waters are nutrient-rich, seabirds flock here to feed. The nearby ferry terminal is a favorite place for pigeon guillemots, one of the most common diving seabirds in southeast Alaska. A brief stop at an active bald eagle’s nest will reveal how this easy-to-recognize bird of prey lives. More excellent chances to spot birds, especially cormorants, await you along the Long Island causeway. Then, your guide will lead your small group down a forest trail and through grasslands to observe passerines, the huge order of songbirds that includes sparrows, warblers and flycatchers. The feisty rufous hummingbird is also found here, when not following the largest migration route of any American hummingbird.

Travel along the incredibly photogenic Klondike Highway to the Canadian border, while pausing along the way to snap pictures of the gorgeous wilderness. The road pretty much follows the trail that prospectors carved out during the Gold Rush of 1898. The countryside is still largely undeveloped, except for a few bridges and the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway that parallels the road. Roadside stops will be made to view natural attractions such as ancient glaciers and Pitchfork Falls, a lovely cascade that splits into branches that resemble the tines of a pitchfork. After pausing at the Canadian border at White Pass summit, you will travel back down the Klondike Highway toward Skagway. Commentary will enhance your understanding of the attractions and the area’s history.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Travel a picturesque highway that follows a trail created during the Gold Rush of 1898. • Snap pictures while pausing at scenic lookouts with views of glaciers and waterfalls. • Stop at the summit of White Pass, which marks the U.S. and Canadian border. • Hear enlightening commentary that describes the area’s history and attractions.
