    OVERVIEW

Recognize how the urban landscape of Portugal’s capital has changed through the centuries by viewing architecture that epitomizes different time periods. You will glimpse the UNESCO World Heritage site Jerónimos Monastery – an early 16th-century icon that holds the remains of Vasco da Gama – on the way to Belém Tower, a riverfront fortification that he and other Portuguese explorers such as Magellan passed on their Voyages of Discovery. Stroll to the Museum of Art, Architecture, and Technology (MAAT Museum). Delight in its striking modern facade, and savor the charming contrast it presents alongside one of Lisbon's oldest neighborhoods. Finally, explore the Baixa Quarter, which will show how the area had to be completely rebuilt after a 1755 earthquake reduced it to rubble. The reconstruction followed a thoughtful urban plan and used a native Pombaline style of architecture that was earthquake-resistant, fire-proof and so innovative that cities throughout the world copied it.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • See buildings from various time periods that show how Lisbon’s architecture has evolved.
    • View two UNESCO World Heritage sites from the 16th century.
    • Walk through the Baixa quarter district, which was ingeniously rebuilt after an earthquake in 1755.
    • Stroll to the MAAT Museum and admire its striking modern facade.

    OVERVIEW

Get a taste of local life while walking through Lisbon’s public plazas and toast the occasion with a literal taste of a craft beer. Restauradores Square exudes history as it commemorates the restoration of the Portuguese crown in 1640 after decades of Spanish rule. Rossio Square is historical as well, but known more for its iconic wave-patterned pavement, a 19th-century design that was later copied throughout Portugal and even internationally. Still, the most popular plaza is sprawling Commerce Square, which opens to harbor and the Tagus River estuary. It was constructed as a symbolic entrance to the city after a devastating earthquake in 1755 leveled the area. The Rua Augusta Arch was added about a century later to commemorate Lisbon’s reconstruction following that earthquake. To complement the experience of spending free time in Commerce Square, you will tour a brewery. After a sampling of the craft beers, you will understand why they are so acclaimed.

    HIGHLIGHTS

    • Walk through several downtown plazas and discover their historical importance.
    • Spend free time in and around Commerce Square, a hub for shopping and dining.
    • Sample a selection of craft beer after an enlightening tour of the brewery.

Sample several unique wines with an unusual history from the westernmost wine region in continental Europe. On the way to the Sintra-Colares cellar, you will stop for photos at the Belém Tower, the riverfront fortress from which so many Portuguese explorers set sail. This landmark should pique your curiosity about the local history, which is especially interesting with regard to wine. The Colares region is one of the few places in the world suitable for growing ramisco grapes because they must be planted in deep sandy trenches so the roots can reach the clay soil below. The vines must also be maintained low to ground to survive the steady salty winds. It is a fascinating and arduous process that you will learn about during the wine and tapas tasting at the wine cellar, which was founded in 1931. Afterwards, you will discover more about the area during the panoramic tour of Lisbon.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Sample several unusual wines paired with tapas at the Sintra-Colares wine cellar.
    • Learn how these vines survived the aphids that destroyed Europe’s vineyards centuries ago.
    • Enjoy an enlightening driving tour through Lisbon with a stop at the Belém Tower.

This is your opportunity to visit Fatima, an important world pilgrimage site, known by many as the Lourdes of Portugal. Your guide will describe the legendary story behind the region’s fame en route during your approximately two-hour drive.

Fatima was a very poor and forgotten parish until an apparition of the Virgin Mary was seen by three peasant children back in 1917. The little village was transformed almost overnight into a pilgrimage town that grew around the imposing modern basilica and shrine. You'll stop at the modern basilica and square, which is larger than St. Peter's Square in Vatican City. Here, enjoy about two hours of free time to explore the area on your own.
