This tour provides an overview of Alaska's capital city and its scenic attractions -- including one of the world's only drive-to glaciers, the Mendenhall. Your guided tour drives through Juneau's picturesque downtown waterfront. Vist Mendenhall Glacier, a moving river of ice with rugged crevasses and distinctive blue hues in the ice. Stroll the walkways to the Visitor Center and take in one of the glaciology exhibits, and interpretative talk with a Forest Ranger, or simply enjoy the panoramic view of the glacier. Afterward your drive takes you to Juneau's Macaulay Salmon Hatchery and Visitor Center. There you will learn the value of ocean ranching to Juneau's commercial and sport fishing industries and the hatchery's role in keeping the area salmon population at sustainable levels. Enjoy an enlightening look at Juneau on the way to an unexpectedly luxuriant botanical garden that follows sustainable practices. After taking in several key attractions in Alaska’s capital city, you will pause at Brotherhood Bridge, which is dedicated to the Alaska Native Brotherhood, which has advocated civil rights for the state’s indigenous people for more than a century. The bridge also offers a grand view of Mendenhall Glacier in the distance. You will be treated to a different perspective of the glacier as you ride a covered shuttle through the Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure. Located in America’s largest national forest, this natural wonderland presents an incredible array of specimens, many of which will be in bloom. Although the flower towers on upside-down trees are the signature attraction, there is plenty more see. During the bonus behind-the-scenes tour of the greenhouses, you will learn some gardening tips and hear about ways that plants benefit the environment.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Behold a huge array of species at a botanical garden in Tongass National Forest.
    • Stop at Brotherhood Bridge for a spectacular view of Mendenhall Glacier in the distance.
    • See some of the key landmarks in Alaska’s capital while driving through Juneau.

Enjoy an authentic Alaskan experience by kayaking across a lake toward Mendenhall Glacier and then feasting on salmon and other dishes made with fresh local ingredients. more...

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a picturesque drive to pristine Mendenhall Lake, which lies just north of Juneau in the Tongass National Forest. Soon after arriving, you will ease into a two-person kayak and begin paddling across the lake’s crystal-clear water. You will find that the kayak is remarkably easy to navigate.

Your destination will be Mendenhall Glacier, one of dozens of glaciers that make up the Juneau Ice Field. While you will remain a safe distance away from Mendenhall Glacier, you will certainly be close enough to behold its staggering beauty.

Along the way, you may spot arctic terns nesting along the shore, eagles soaring overhead, and black bears and goats up in the hills among the Sitka spruce trees. Kayaking past Nugget Falls is another highlight, as it cascades into the lake next to the glacier.

Next, you will drive to the Gold Creek Salmon Bake for a sumptuous Alaskan feast. The dishes typically include fresh salmon grilled over alder wood, Parmesan chicken, Tongass wild rice pilaf, au gratin potatoes, and baked beans with reindeer sausage. The selection is characteristic of authentic Alaskan dishes and made with local ingredients. It’s all you can eat, so take your time, but be sure to leave room for blueberry cake for dessert.

After dining, you will return to the pier.
