Herring Factory Visit & Tasting
hrs Estimate Duration
Enjoy a panoramic tour of the city and savor the taste of Norwegian herring during a factory tour. Pause for photos at a scenic outlook and at a monument dedicated to Norway's first king.
A short drive through the city takes you to Kyvik, a family-owned company that has been processing herring for more than 150 years. During the factory tour, you will see firsthand how massive quantities of herring are processed and packaged, just as they have been over the centuries. These fish have been so vital to the local economy that Haugesund's official song describes the city as being set on the herring's backbone.
Kyvik manufactures all sorts of herring products, including salted, pickled and spiced herring. You will have the opportunity to sample various products at the end of your visit.
Admire Norway's natural beauty at Steinsfjellet, an elevated lookout with panoramic views of the North Sea. It's well worth a photo stop. Nearby is Haraldshaugen monument. Erected in 1872 to mark the 1,000-year anniversary of Norway's unification, this national monument looms over the supposed burial site of Harald Fairhair, the first king of Norway. The monument is comprised of more than two-dozen obelisks, the center one representing Harald and the smaller ones representing the ancient regions he united.
