Sample some of the most delectable small-plate dishes and irresistible sweets that have elevated uptown Saint John into a true foodie destination. After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive in Saint John's historical uptown which has become an extraordinary culinary destination. Beavertails will be your first stop, where you will be treated to a fresh maple-glazed pastry. You will then enter the iconic Old City Market through its original wrought-iron gates that still swing open each morning. Here, you will truly find a foodie paradise of sorts. It opened in 1876, barely escaped the devastating Great Fire of 1877, and has since attracted some of the finest food retailers in Canada. Be sure to notice the ceiling, which resembles an inverted keel of a ship in honor of Saint John's long history of shipbuilding. While browsing the stalls, you will be offered a variety of locally produced food and sweets. You can expect to sample dulse, a deep-purple sea vegetable that is dried and eaten by the handful like popcorn. Seafood small plates include a lobster roll slider, candied salmon with cucumber, and smoked salmon on a tasty baguette. For dessert, a special cream-filled "lobster tail" pastry is yours to enjoy. Following your market visit, you’ll visit Marjorie’s cafe, a cafe that specializes in delicious foods using locally sourced ingredients. At this final stop on your Foodie Tour, you'll sample product sourced locally and in season.
