Cruise the tranquil waters of Long Lake on a Mississippi River-style paddle-wheeler as a prelude to taking a hay ride through the orchards and fields of a working farm.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a leisurely drive inland to the town of Naples, which perches at the end of Long Lake. Here, you will board the Songo River Queen II, a replica of a Mississippi River paddle-wheel boat. You will have plenty of room to settle in and stretch out, as the 93-foot-long boat has two decks, one fully shaded.

As you cruise along the glass-smooth lake, you will take in the gorgeous natural views. In the distance, you will spot Mount Washington, the highest peak in the Northeast, and aptly named Pleasant Mountain close by. Other outstanding sights include Arrowhead Point jutting out from the shoreline and forested Pine Island off Mast Cove.

Along the way, you will be served a lobster roll lunch, a classic Maine dish. Dessert will wait until you arrive at your next destination, Pietree Orchard. Author Tabitha King, wife of author Stephen King, owns this working farm, which has been operating for nearly 80 years.

You will enjoy an authentic farm experience by taking a leisurely hay ride through the property. The driver will describe the environmentally friendly farming methods and the fruits and produce that flourish here

Cruise to nearby Peaks Island for a traditional Maine lobster bake with all sorts of delectable side dishes at a quaint New England inn.

After a short walk from the pier, you will board a ferry bound for Peaks Island, which lies just three miles offshore. Although it will only take about 15 minutes to reach the island, the crossing of sparkling Casco Bay will be wonderfully picturesque.

You will pass the 19th-century Bug Light Lighthouse, an elegant cast-iron lighthouse with Corinthian columns that was modeled after a monument that stands near the Acropolis in Athens. You may also spot Fort Scammel on neighboring House Island, which was erected prior to the War of 1812 to protect Maine’s coastal communities.

First settled by the Abnaki Indians, Peaks Island started to flourish in the late 1890s, as Portland’s population grew, hotels and cottages were built and an amusement park went up. It is hard to imagine, but Peaks Island was once called the “Coney Island of Maine.” Today, the population is about 1,000, and the lifestyle is low-key and quintessentially New England.

Upon arriving, you will walk to the nearby Inn on Peaks Island, a seasonal lodging that features outstanding views of the sea and classic Maine cuisine. Here, you will enjoy a traditional lobster bake that will include New England clam chowder, steamed mussels and sides such as corn on the cob. If you wish to stretch your legs afterwards, there will be time.

To make the most of your day in Portland, this tour combines the city highlights with a visit to historic Portland Head Light and the charming seaside town of Kennebunkport. Highlights of Portland include a scenic drive through the quaint streets of the Old Port where street lanterns highlight a gracious mix of architectural styles. Once a warehouse district, it has been transformed and offers charming restaurants, pubs, boutiques, and galleries.

You’ll pass a number of historic Victorian homes and enjoy terrific views of Casco Bay. Driving through Portland, you’ll see the new art district, as well as the commercial and business districts. Continuing along the beautiful coastline of Maine, arrive at the picturesque town of Cape Elizabeth for a visit of the oldest lighthouse in Maine. First illuminated on January 10, 1791, Portland Head Light has since stood at the gateway to the harbor for mariners traveling Maine's perilous coast. A short photo stop will be made here.

Located just 45 minutes from Portland, enjoy a scenic drive through Kennebunkport passing the stunning mansions built by wealthy sea captains and merchants in the 1700's and 1800's. Pass Walker's Point, the Bush compound where world leaders often gathered when George H Bush was president. A stop will be made at Dock Square to enjoy some free time for shopping and a bite on your own along the picturesque bay front streets lined with galleries, boutiques, restaurants and cafes overlooking the harbor.

Sample a selection of intriguing beverages at three venues that produce some of Portland’s most unusual libations, such as mead, craft beer and small-batch spirits.

After walking directly from the pier, you will meander through the historical streets of the Old Port, an area that 100 years ago was home to canneries, factories and textile mills. Today, this warehouse district has been revitalized with dozens of restaurants, coffee houses, distilleries and microbreweries. It is the ideal setting for a Happy Hour tour.

At each of the stops along the way, you will enjoy a tasting of a local libation and a traditional Maine snack to complement the beverage. The venues will be chosen the day of the excursion, but one of them will surely be a brewery, as there are more than a dozen in and around Portland. Whatever you sample at the brewery, whether it be a light lager or an India Pale Ale, it will be made with local ingredients that lend it a distinctive taste.

Chances are, you will also sample mead, the oldest of all fermented beverages. The most distinct ingredient in mead is wildflower honey, which flavors the beverage without overpowering it. Like beer, mead comes in all sorts of varieties that may be enlivened with blueberries, ginger or other flavorful ingredients.

You will enjoy a selection of unique spirits from a distillery. It too uses local ingredients that gives it a farm-to-flask designation.

Bicycle along a popular coastal promenade to the state park on forested Mackworth Island, where you will hike along a picturesque loop trail before bicycling back to Portland.

Meeting at the pier, you’ll receive a safety briefing and helmet and then begin your biking adventure. Riding a bicycle allows you a wonderful up-close view of the area.

As you pedal along the tree-lined Eastern Promenade, you can expect to see other bikers, joggers and walkers enjoying this waterfront trail. The promenade was built along a former rail corridor and offers spectacular views of Casco Bay.

Every so often, you will pause for the guide to elaborate on the significance of landmarks like Fort Gorges, which perches on uninhabited Hog Island. The fort wasn’t finished until the end of the Civil War, by which time weaponry had changed making it obsolete.

Later, you will learn fascinating facts about Bug Lighthouse, which was once just a wooden tower, and the Casco Bay Islands, also known as the Calendar Islands because there are supposedly 365 of them.

Upon reaching Mackworth Island, you will hop off your bike for a one mile hike along a trail that encircles the island. In 1946 Maine’s governor set aside the island “as a sanctuary for wild beasts and birds,” and in fact, buried his own dogs here. During your hike you may also spot seagulls and ospreys.

After leaving Mackworth Island, you will pedal back to the pier.

The spectacular rocky coastline nearby Portland, Maine is studded with lighthouses dating back over 200 years. On this tour you’ll see three prominent lighthouses and visit the Museum of Portland Head Light. Drive through historic Portland passing by the Eastern Promenade offering a panoramic view of Casco Bay, the Portland Observatory, the new arts district, as well as the thriving business districts.

Visit Bug Light, a steel structure lined with brick, that was first lit in 1875 to aid navigation for this busy port. Enjoy the Liberty Ship Memorial dedicated to the 266 ships built on the site during WWII. These vessels were the workhorses of the WWII fleet, carrying cargoes of grain, mail, ore, ammo, trucks and troops. Then it’s a short jaunt to the Spring Point Ledge Lighthouse. Many vessels ran aground on this dangerous ledge before requests from several steamship companies convinced the government to build a lighthouse.

Travel along Cape Elizabeth’s rocky coast to Fort Williams, now home of Maine’s oldest lighthouse. First illuminated on January 10, 1791, Portland Head Light has since stood at the gateway to the harbor for mariners traveling the perilous coast. Here you’ll have ample time to explore the grounds and visit the museum located in the former lighthouse keeper’s quarters. It chronicles the history of the lighthouse and Fort Williams with exhibits displaying original artifacts and documents, navigational aids, lenses, video displays, models and photography.
