Join a Tlingit guide for an enlightening walk through Ketchikan, during which you will hear about the city’s history and how the indigenous people have adapted to the changes. The guide will explain the meaning of the many totem poles scattered about town. Some totems tell legends while others trace family histories or commemorate the lives of elders. As you meander along the wooden boardwalks of Creek Street, the former red-light district, the guide will explain why the street was constructed over water and how it developed. You will also walk Married Man’s Trail, a spur off Creek Street that was once an escape route used by men that couldn’t afford to be caught in the brothels. You will then see a spawning ground for salmon as they head up the rapids of Ketchikan Creek. A tram will bring you to the Tlingit-owned hotel Cape Fox Lodge, where you will sample a selection of tribal dishes.
