This completely undeveloped wilderness sprawls across more than two million acres in the Tongass National Forest, America’s largest national forest. Majestic beyond imagination, the landscape is a mosaic of sea cliffs, misty mountains, deep fjords, thundering waterfalls, jewel-like lakes and dense rainforest, all of which you will gaze down upon from your own window seat. The exact route for the flight will depend on the weather. If you fly south, you will likely see shimmering Big Goat Lake and New Eddystone Rock, an immense volcanic spire that rises above the sea. The northern route usually passes over Neets Bay and Bell Island Hot Springs. Be sure to look for brown and black bear, Sitka black-tailed deer and bald eagles as wildlife is abundant.

Go fishing on an open-deck skiff in the pristine waters off Ketchikan and then gather around a crackling campfire and enjoy a classic Alaskan fish dinner. Experience the magic of Point Adolphus first thing in the morning! Departing directly from the pier as soon as your ship docks, this is the first adventure of the day, leaving you with plenty of free time afterwards to explore the wonders of Icy Strait Point. Point Adolphus is noted for having the highest concentration of humpback whales in the Alaskan panhandle, so it is highly likely that you will see these behemoths feasting on teeny crustaceans known as krill and on small schooling fishes. It is quite the spectacle to watch a 50-foot-long, 35-ton humpback whale waving its fluke up and down before diving to feed and fatten up for its winter migration south. You may also spot them bubble-feeding, a group effort in which several whales work together to drive fish into a mass to easily consume them in great quantities. The onboard naturalist will describe the behavior and characteristics of the whales and the other marine life that inhabits these waters. They include Dall’s porpoises, Stellar sea lions, harbor seals and orca whales. Whale sightings are guaranteed.

The venue for this immersion into the iconic bears of Alaska is the Fortress of the Bear, a rescue center that opened in 2007. Since that time, the center has cared for dozens of young bears and relocated them into caring environments. Circumstances prevent the bears from being released back into the wild. You can observe the brown and black bears from just 25 feet away, a rare opportunity that will make the experience even more meaningful. The naturalists will explain how the bears were rescued, their personality traits and their daily routines, one of the highlights being feeding time. Their seasonal diets include everything from fish and fruit to peanut butter and honey. As you will see, the brown bears are noticeably larger than the black bears.

The tallest known red cedar in the Tongass National Park towers majestically at the end of the boardwalk. From the pier, you will walk the short distance to the Kayak center where you will receive a safety briefing and kayaking orientation. Following that, you will hop in your two-person kayak and begin your adventure. You'll spend nearly two hours paddling about these pristine waters, delighting in the serenity and joy of being out on the water, as well as having the opportunity to observe the bountiful wildlife that inhabits this wilderness area. Your guide will help you spot animals, explain their habits, and offer all sorts of tidbits to maximize your time kayaking along the shoreline. While there are no certainties regarding what you might observe, humpback whales typically feed along the very same route that you will be traveling. You may see one in the distance breaching the water's surface, waving its fluke before diving, or spy hopping, which is when a whale pokes just its head out of the water to look around. Look for whales and other marine life while cruising through the pristine waters not far off from port, a luxury that most other destinations can’t offer. The bays, channels and passages within just minutes of Juneau are teeming with marine life, none more spectacular to watch than humpback whales. They put on quite the show while feeding on massive amounts of shrimp-like krill, their favorite food. A single humpback whale can eat a literal ton of these tiny creatures in one day using its baleen – a sort of strainer attached to its upper jaw – to separate the krill from the water. Sometimes, several humpback whales work together in a behavior known as bubble-net feeding to push the krill into a giant ball before consuming them from underneath right before breaching the water’s surface. It is a spectacular display of the power, beauty and ingenuity of these extraordinary marine mammals.
