Discover the traditional ways being practiced in the fishing village Pedregalejo, where you will see how an old-style fishing boat is made and learn how to grill sardines on an open fire. The origin of the wooden boats, known as jábegas, dates to the Phoenician era. They have recently experienced a rebirth of sorts with rowing clubs using them in competitive events. Pedregalejo is also revered for its old-style beachfront restaurants known as chiringuitos. At one of the most popular chiringuitos, you will learn how to prepare espeto, which is barbecued fish, most often sardines. The fish are heavily seasoned with coarse sea salt and skewered on long flat bamboo sticks. They are then placed over an open fire of olive wood, which imparts an unmistakable flavor. If sardines are used, their silvery color will turn golden brown as they cook. Once the sardines are done, you can eat them with your fingers right off the skewer.

    Wild Horses of the Namib

Drive into the seemingly lifeless Namib Desert to watch a herd of wild horses drink at a watering hole, during which you will learn how they have adapted to the harsh conditions.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a 90-minute picturesque drive into the vast Namib Desert, which stretches for more than 1,200 miles along the Atlantic coast. Although the land is barren and nearly uninhabited, the animals that remain have skillfully adapted to the unforgiving, yet eerily beautiful environment.

The Wild Horses of the Namib are a perfect example. While their origins are a mystery, the horses are not indigenous. I is believed that they may be descendants of horses from a shipwreck in the late 19th century, or runaways from German troops in World War I, but it’s not known for sure.

From the comfort of a covered observation stand, you will observe the horses as they drink at the Garub Water Hole. While there is no telling how many horses will show up, typically more than a dozen gather to drink their fill before heading back into mountains. You may notice the horses turning their backs to the sun so it shines along their spines not sides, which minimizes the effects of the direct sunlight and reduces dehydration.

Before returning to the pier, be sure to ask your guide to explain other extraordinary ways that the horses have adapted to the desert.

Recognize the craftsmanship behind some of Kobe’s finest architecture by browsing a carpentry museum, followed by an enlightening look at sake production at a museum dedicated to Japan’s most iconic drink. The Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum is the only venue of its kind in Japan, and its collection of mostly hand tools is astounding. The museum building is equally remarkable, as master craftsmen built it using traditional techniques and materials such as juraku clay and Ibushi-smoked roof tiles. The Kikumasamune Sake Museum is just as devoted to the finer points of Japan’s revered rice wine. Besides gaining an understanding of how sake is processed, you will sample a selection of the drink, whose origins predate recorded history. Kobe’s acclaimed Nada district is Japan’s largest sake producer, so expect the tastes to vary. Back in Himeji, you will pause at its elegant castle, a 17th-century landmark so distinctive that it earned a UNESCO World Heritage site designation.

    HIGHLIGHTS:
    • Browse the Takenaka Carpentry Tools Museum, the only one of its kind in Japan.
    • See how sake is produced at the museum dedicated to it and then sample some sake.
    • Behold Himeji Castle, an outstanding example of 17th-century Japanese castle architecture.

Discover the most fascinating aspects of Bonaire’s history on an enlightening walk through downtown and through stories from costumed characters in the Terramar Museum.

While strolling through the heart of Kralendijk, the island’s capital, you will see how the 17th-century Dutch-built Fort Oranje has been converted into the island’s main courthouse. Similarly, the Parliament House was once the private residence of a prominent family. As revealing as these architectural insights will be, few experiences will be quite so revealing as listening to the museum’s historical actors describe what life was like in the past. You may hear about the Dutch colonizers, how slavery was abolished and the origins of the island’s traditions. The exhibits cover more than 7,000 years of history through artifacts recovered from shipwrecks, 3D reconstructions, descriptive timelines and historical photographs.

After browsing the museum, you will have time for shopping at a market near the harbor.

Start your tour with a short walk to Kotor, which is well-preserved and surrounded by a protective wall built in the Middle Ages. Discover the Renaissance-style 18th-century Prince’s Palace and the striking Romanesque Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, one of Kotor’s largest and most revered buildings, built in 1166 to honor the patron and protector of the city. The road carries you on to 15th-century Cetinje, once the Montenegrin capital, and Kotor’s medieval fortified Old Town, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Following a route that inspired playwright George Bernard Shaw to wax poetic about its beauty, you’ll understand his enchantment as you pass majestic mountains on one side and a sparkling cerulean bay on the other. In Cetinje, the former center of Montenegrin rule, visit the neoclassical Museum of King Nikola, once a palace and seat of the Montenegrin royal family. Settle in for a captivating ride along the Budva Riviera, a resort area known for its nearly eight miles of sun-drenched beaches. You’ll journey to the Carpet shop in Grbalj plain. Invertors of rugs and kilims were semi nomads and nomads living of the sheep rearing. After little bit more than a century of pause, the 500-year long Osman influence returns to Montenegro in a form of the oriental handmade rugs and kilims. Great variety of rugs and kilims, all kinds of sizes, designs and colors are here to floor your home. The experienced staff will gladly help you choose the ones that will suit your home and stay for following generations adding up in value over the years. Hike down to a black-sand beach of volcanic origin and discover the lasting influence of King Kamehameha, who was born nearby in the stunningly beautiful countryside.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at a statue of King Kamehameha I, which stands near the site where he was born. Kamehameha is best known for uniting the Hawaiian Islands into one kingdom in 1810, and the statue recognizes his accomplishments.

A wonderfully scenic drive will then bring you to the Pololu Valley, a verdant landscape that is still only sparsely populated despite being first settled in the 15th century. You will have the option of admiring the spectacular coastal scenery from an elevated lookout or hiking down to the black-sand beach.

Made from lava that cooled instantly and shattered when it flowed into the sea, the black sand retains more heat than white sand. Consequently, sea turtles favor it for their nests.

You will enjoy another perspective of the Big Island’s rocky northern shore at Keokea Park, where you will stop for lunch. The coast isn’t protected by offshore reefs, so the surf here is strong, rough and wonderfully picturesque. It is an ideal setting for photos.

A bit inland, you will find Hawi, a free-spirited community with plenty of eclectic shops, including the Kohala Coffee Mill. You will stop there for a cup of coffee made from Kona beans and a scoop of local, hand-crafted ice cream.

Hike a winding forest trail through some of the most spectacular countryside on Kauai, a natural wonderland that lives up to its nickname, the “Garden Island.”

After departing from the pier, you will learn about the history of Kauai from the local guide, who will regale you with stories of the “Garden Island.” The oldest and northernmost island in the Hawaiian chain, Kauai is covered by tropical rainforest, emerald-green valleys and jagged mountains of volcanic origin. It is a gorgeous setting for hiking through the forest.

The trail that you will follow covers about five miles and is immensely picturesque the entire time. As you hike through the lush wilderness, you will gaze out over some of the most extraordinary terrain in Hawaii. You can expect to see thundering waterfalls, primeval mountains and deep valleys, all created by ancient volcanic activity.

Along the way, the guide will point out the most interesting flora and fauna, especially those endemic to Kauai. You may see indigenous white plumbago in bloom, unusual ferns on the forest floor, brightly colored bromeliads clinging to tree branches and native forest birds such as the Kauai Amakihi and the Anianiau, the smallest of Hawaii’s honeycreepers.

After about three hours of hiking in this natural wonderland, you will be served a light boxed lunch in a nearby picnic area. You will also have time to explore a bit on your own.

Cruise through the gorgeous lagoon surrounding Huahine and stop along the way for a refreshing dip in translucent, turquoise waters. This picture-perfect setting captures the classic South Pacific of our dreams, a fabulously lush, unspoiled paradise where coconut palms are among the most substantial structures – all ringed by pale, clear waters. And one of the best ways to appreciate this idyllic landscape is from the shaded salon or open-air trampoline decks of a catamaran. This shallow-draft vessel is ideal for snuggling in for spectacular, up-close views of tiny coves that deeper-hulled boats can’t reach. As you circle the lagoon, you’ll see that Huahine is actually made up of two main islands, both of volcanic origin – with just the trace of a sandy land bridge connecting them at lowest tide. After a time spent admiring it all from the boat, your captain will find a perfect spot to stop so you can slip into the water and enjoy the delicious feel of the South Pacific itself on your skin.

The Perugian poet, Giosuè Carducci, left a memorable description of Umbria with the term “the green heart of Italy,” where every imaginable shade of green can be witnessed in one breath.

Experience the beauty, history, wine, and flavors of Umbria through your guided tour of the Monte Vibiano Castle, the ancient Vigna Lorenzo vineyard, and the Cantina Monte Vibiano winery. Leave with your driver and guide on a picturesque journey from Civitavecchia for a visit of the historic center of the Umbrian hilltop town of Todi. Capture impressive views from every direction and enjoy a coffee break in Todi before you continue the journey to Monte Vibiano Castle. Arrive at the 2,000-year-old castle owned by the Fasola Bologna family since the 19th century.

Your guided tour starts through a medieval iron gate and a guarding tower as you make your way to the beautiful castle gardens. Visit the private family chapel to view unusual and fascinating paintings by a famous Umbrian painter. Proceed to the Elizabethan labyrinth, an original green theatre, and a historical swimming pool. Learn about the Etruscan origins of the castle and the Vibi family who produced two Roman Emperors. Leave the castle behind you with a short drive to the entrance of the olive grove. Electric cars await you for a drive through the ancient olive trees to the evocative Vigna Lorenzo, which dates to the times of the Carthaginians, who under Hannibal defeated the Romans in 217 BC. Discover the traditions and legends that soak the soil of this magical environment, where the Fasola-Bologna Family lead Italy’s green revolution in the production of wine and olive oil with zero CO2 emissions.

Depart from Vigna Lorenzo with the electric cars on a scenic ride to the winery. At Cantina Monte Vibiano, accompany an expert sommelier on a tour of the vinification and barrel rooms of the environmentally sensitive winery. Learn how wine is produced and aged using pioneering sustainable processes. Conclude your winery tour on a panoramic terrace with a wine tasting experience and a three-course meal representing the best flavors of Umbria. Return to Civitavecchia, but not before a mid-way stop for a visit and coffee break in Piazza Martiri d'Ungheria in the ancient city of Viterbo.

Gaze out over the sea from several spectacularly scenic hilltops, where you will tour a 14th-century castle and the former palace of an Austrian archduke.

After departing from the pier, you will soon arrive at Bellver Castle, a spectacular Gothic landmark from the 14th century. Its round design is unusual among Spanish castles, and although seemingly impenetrable, the fortress never served a defensive purpose.

As you ramble about the hilltop castle taking photos, you will appreciate the origin of its name, which means “lovely view” in Catalan. Few panoramas are quite so beautiful.

Continuing on, you will enjoy a picturesque drive inland, passing through Valldemossa, the island’s highest town. Still renowned for Polish composer Fréderic Chopin and French author George Sand spending the winter of 1838-1839 in a monastery here, the town has retained its atmospheric charm.

Nearby, you will find Son Marroig, the former palace of Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria. The estate is handsomely decorated with period furnishings and makes quite the setting for you to enjoy an aperitif under the Carrara marble rotunda that overlooks the sea. The oddly shaped rock formation that you will see jutting into the water is Na Foradada, which means “pierced rock,” a reference to the gaping 60-foot vertical hole in the center of the rock.

The panoramic view from the nearby Mirador de Na Foradada restaurant will be just as magnificent. Lunch will consist of a traditional mixed paella cooked over a wood-fired grill.

Stroll the cobblestone paths of Alfabia Gardens, an oasis of greenery that surrounds an estate dating to the 13th century. An official Cultural Heritage Site, the gardens contain rare species from all over the world. While meandering about, you may see pomegranate trees with twisted trunks, Indian horse chestnuts, Spanish firs and the Queen’s Garden, an enchanting greenspace redesigned for Isabella II’s visit in the mid-19th century. Even so, the highlight may be the 72-column pergola adorned with dozens of sculptures and concealed jets that shoot graceful arcs of water through the air. Following a leisurely lunch in the gardens, you will visit Bellver Castle, a spectacular Gothic landmark from the 14th century. A drive through the city and into the scenic countryside takes you to the Craft Village situated nearby Niyodo River. The Niyodo River is famous for its transparency and having the highest quality water in Japan. Enjoy the beautiful scenery that unfolds as you travel to your destination.

Arriving at the craft village, you will experience how Tosa washi paper is made by hand, the traditional way. The mountainous area around Kochi provides the raw materials needed and the Niyodo River plenty of the water used in its production.

Although the origins of paper are not conclusively known, according to the Engishiki (a record of laws & customs), taxes in Tosa Province were collected using papers. It is also estimated that the paper making history goes back at least 1,000 years. Enjoy the long history of paper making and experience the beauty of this unique artwork during your visit.

Stop to view and photograph the Nagoya Chinka Bridge and the crystal clear waters of the Niyodo River. The bridge was uniquely designed to be underwater during floods and can only be crossed over when the water level is low.
