Pipes, Drums & the Highland Fling
hrs Estimate Duration
Prince Edward Island has a rich Scottish heritage and nowhere is it reflected more than at the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts in Summerside. Home to North America's only full time bag piping school, the pipers, drummers and dancers have won international honors for their Celtic skills. You'll be greeted by a piper upon arrival and led into the main hall, where the head of the school will tell you the fascinating story behind the creation of this award-winning facility. You'll be treated to a presentation about the history of the bagpipe by the head instructor including a demonstration of how it works. You’ll learn about the history of the Highland snare drum, its construction and the lead drummer will share his drumming dexterity with you.
The international, award-winning Highland dance instructor will treat you to a variety of dance steps and attire, as well as explain the heritage of the dance. Then all three world class performers will showcase their talents in a short concert, followed by an opportunity for you to try your hand at drumming, playing a pipe chanter or maybe a group highland fling. There will also be a video presentation featuring the college's Highland Storm performance which will get your toes tapping and hands clapping as you marvel at the abilities of the talented performers. Before heading back to Charlottetown, you'll have the opportunity to browse the well-stocked Celtic Gift Shop.
