Those interested in geology and volcanology will enjoy visiting the biggest research institution in the Far East and see the highlights of this interesting city surrounded by volcanos.


Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskiy is a city of fire and ice, flanked by three volcanos in the immediate vicinity, and today you can learn about them at the Kamchatka Volcanology museum, located in the Institute of Volcanology, the biggest research institution of Volcanology and Seismology in the Far East. The center studies volcanoes, earthquakes, volcanic geology, geophysics, geochemistry and tectonics not only in Kamchatka but all over the world. Established in 1963, it is considered to be the only Russian specialized museum with such a collection of contemporary volcanic and postvolcanic rocks and minerals. The Museum has regional collections representing products of volcanic and postvolcanic activities of most Kamchatka volcanoes, the Kuril Islands and other regions. You will have a chance to see fantastic images and films about active volcanoes of Kamchatka.


Discover the city highlights and It’s then on to the scenic summit of Petrovskaya Hill where the view-point overlooking the Avacha Bay is located.


Stop to visit the Russian Orthodox Cathedral with beautiful painted ceilings. Located on the city’s highest point, is a sight to behold. You’ll also visit the local market, located in the center of Petropavlovsk and brimming with both food and consumer goods.
