Kayak and Beach Break
hrs Estimate Duration
After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a brief panoramic drive through Progreso and then into the lush countryside, a natural area that borders lagoons and mangrove forests. Upon arrival at the base camp, your guide will brief you on the art of handling a kayak, give you safety instructions and provide an outline of the adventure ahead.
As you paddle through the typically calm waters of the lagoon which has depths of 1 – 4 feet, you can expect to spot a huge variety of birds, as more than 300 avian species live here. You might see pelicans diving into the water for fish, and herons and egrets wading through the mangroves that grow along the shoreline. Perhaps even more impressive are the pink flamingos that flock here to nest.
Flamingos favor estuaries and shallow waters for breeding, and the lagoons around Progreso are ideal. Flamingos live in huge colonies, as there is safety in numbers, especially when the birds feed with their heads completely submerged in the water. Their diet consists of tiny fish and shrimplike crustaceans that lend a pinkish hue to their feathers.
After approximately ninety minutes of kayaking, you will return to the base camp and then drive to a nearby beach club, where you will be free to relax however you please. You might stroll along the coast, bask in the sun or stretch out under a palm tree and read a book. This is your time to enjoy the serenity of nature at your own pace without a care in the world. A light snack will be provided.
Following your time at the beach, you will rejoin your transportation and transfer back to the pier.
