La isla sagrada de Lindisfarne

  • 61/4
    horas Duración estimada

Tour an exceptional castle estate and a nearby village on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, which can only be reached at low tide, when the waters recede from the causeway.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a two hour drive north to Lindisfarne causeway, which connects the mainland to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, often described as ‘The Jewel of the Northumberland Coast’. When the tide comes in, it completely covers the causeway, cutting off the island from the rest of the world until low tide. Before the causeway was constructed, the island was even more isolated, which attracted a number of monasteries.

In the 7th century, the monk Cuthbert became the bishop of Lindisfarne, where his reputed gift of healing and working miracles became well known. After he died and was named a saint, pilgrims came to Lindisfarne in great numbers, and the entire island was considered holy. Unfortunately, Vikings soon followed in their first raid ever on the coast of Britain.

By the 16th century, an imposing castle was built on Holy Island. Used in its construction were stones that came from the ruins of the Benedictine Priory that was destroyed on the orders of Henry VIII. The castle stood guard over the harbor for three centuries until becoming Sir Edwin Lutyens’ holiday home. During your tour, be sure to note the dominant entryway pillars, the soldiers’ bread ovens, and the Ship Room, where a detailed replica of a Dutch sailing ship hangs from the vaulted ceiling.

Afterwards, you will enjoy free time to stroll the narrow lanes of Lindisfarne village, have lunch on your own, and perhaps browse the shops before returning to the pier in Newcastle.
