OVERVIEW
Behold the beauty of Mendenhall Glacier from the most symbolic bridge in Juneau and become immersed in the fascinating life cycle of salmon at a fish hatchery. The Brotherhood Bridge spans the Mendenhall River and is meant to symbolically unite the people of Alaska. It is dedicated to the Alaska Native Brotherhood, the world’s oldest civil rights organization for indigenous people. The bridge represents the hope that all Alaskans will be treated equally. The focus will turn to Alaska’s native marine life at the Macaulay Salmon Hatchery, which raises a staggering 130 million salmon annually. You will see king, coho and chum salmon in various stages of development and likely observe massive schools of salmon swimming up a 450-foot fish ladder into a holding pond. The hatchery also displays all sorts of local marine species in its aquariums and creatures such as sea cucumbers and sea stars in its touch tanks.
