Explore two of Almeria's most historic draws: a spectacular cathedral in the heart of the city and then an Arab fortress from the 10th century.

Depart from the pier for a pleasant drive toward the city center of Almeria, which lies in a region of Spain that has been inhabited since the Bronze Age. Highly coveted Almeria was repeatedly conquered by the likes of the Phoenicians, Romans and Moors until all the occupied lands were finally recovered under the rule of Ferdinand and Isabella in 1492.

Leaving your coach behind, you'll commence a guided walking tour through the narrow winding streets that lead to the city center. Here, you'll notice the distinct Mudéjar architecture, which employs brick and plaster elaborately decorated with tiles in geometric patterns. Almeria's 16th-century cathedral features both Gothic and Renaissance styles of architecture and with its four buttressed towers, appears fortress-like, a reflection of the need to protect the city against raids from the Barbary pirates. A visit to the cathedral's interior allows you to view the main altar, the 18th century cloister and a number of valuable paintings by notable artists from the the 16th - 18th centuries. Be sure not to miss the cathedral's ribbed ceiling, which is accented with jasper and marble.

Continuing on, you'll re-join your coach and drive to a hilltop overlooking Almeria, the site of La Alcazaba fortress. Constructed in the late 10th century by the Caliph of Cordoba, it still lords over the city. The fortress consists of three main areas: a formal garden built over some of the original medieval foundations, a second area with medieval living quarters and a mosque, and the mostly defensive, thick-walled third section. After visiting this phenomenal landmark, you'll walk down to the square below and then board your coach for the drive back to the pier.
