Ride a small sightseeing train through the largest Asian-style garden in Europe and then explore the serene grounds further on your own. The Bacalhoa Buddha Eden garden lies inland in a park-like setting near the town of Quinta dos Loridos and is one of Portugal’s more unusual attractions. It was constructed in 2001 in response to the destruction of the Buddhas of Bamiyan in Afghanistan. As you meander through the sprawling property, you will see statues of Buddha reclining and seated, numerous contemporary outdoor sculptures and glass-smooth, palm-lined ponds with colorful koi. The hundreds of bright blue terra cotta warriors similar to famed Xian warriors in China are particularly unexpected. No matter where you wander in the garden, you will likely feel a great sense of peace and relaxation. Vineyards blanket some of the acreage, and you will sample a selection of the wines produced there, accompanied by tapas made with traditional local ingredients.

Need to Know:

This tour includes approximately 1 hour and 16 minutes of moderate walking at guests' discretion during their time at Bacalhoa Buddha Eden Garden. There will be 4 steps to enter/exit the motor coach as well as the Train. Guests will have to manage 6 steps as well as paved and cobble stone surfaces throughout the excursion. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns who are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability. Casual, weather-appropriate clothing and comfortable, flat walking shoes are suggested.
