Settle in aboard an expedition catamaran for a wonderfully picturesque cruise to a private island, the starting point for a kayaking adventure through the Siginaka Islands. The cruise will set the stage for what lies ahead, as the scenery will be spectacular. Still, few experiences rival exploring the islands in a sea kayak, where the serenity is so overwhelming that you will feel at one with nature. As you paddle around the islands, the guide will point out the marine life, which should be easily visible in the shallows. Abundant crabs, sea stars and jellyfish live just below the water’s surface. Animals such as sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions and porpoise are frequently spotted as well, some breaching the water’s surface, others sunning on the rocky shores. And be sure to scan the trees for majestic bald eagles. The guide will also describe the influence and culture of the indigenous Tlingits, the area’s first inhabitants.

Enjoy an enlightening look at Juneau on the way to an unexpectedly luxuriant botanical garden that follows sustainable practices. After taking in several key attractions in Alaska’s capital city, you will pause at Brotherhood Bridge, which is dedicated to the Alaska Native Brotherhood, which has advocated civil rights for the state’s indigenous people for more than a century. The bridge also offers a grand view of Mendenhall Glacier in the distance. You will be treated to a different perspective of the glacier as you ride a covered shuttle through the Glacier Gardens Rainforest Adventure. Located in America’s largest national forest, this natural wonderland presents an incredible array of specimens, many of which will be in bloom. Although the flower towers on upside-down trees are the signature attraction, there is plenty more see. During the bonus behind-the-scenes tour of the greenhouses, you will learn some gardening tips and hear about ways that plants benefit the environment.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Behold a huge array of species at a botanical garden in Tongass National Forest.
    • Stop at Brotherhood Bridge for a spectacular view of Mendenhall Glacier in the distance.
    • See some of the key landmarks in Alaska’s capital while driving through Juneau.

Travel along the incredibly photogenic Klondike Highway to the Canadian border, while pausing along the way to snap pictures of the gorgeous wilderness. The road pretty much follows the trail that prospectors carved out during the Gold Rush of 1898. The countryside is still largely undeveloped, except for a few bridges and the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway that parallels the road. Named for the first Euro-American settlers in the area, the Captain William Moore Bridge offers a particularly panoramic view of Alaska’s interior. Other roadside stops will be made to view natural attractions such as ancient glaciers and Pitchfork Falls, a lovely cascade that splits into branches that resemble the tines of a pitchfork. After pausing again at the highway sign that marks the Canadian border at White Pass summit, you will travel back down the Klondike Highway toward Skagway. Commentary will enhance your understanding of the attractions and the area’s history.

    HIGHLIGHTS
    • Travel a picturesque highway that follows a trail created during the Gold Rush of 1898. • Snap pictures while pausing at scenic lookouts with views of glaciers and waterfalls. • Stop at the summit of White Pass, which marks the U.S. and Canadian border. • Hear enlightening commentary that describes the area’s history and attractions.

Venture into the pristine wilds to look for iconic Alaskan animals such as humpback whales and grizzly bears in their natural habitats. Your adventure will begin aboard a whale-watching boat accompanied by a naturalist that will describe the creatures that you may soon observe. The nutrient-rich waters here are teeming with humpback whales that come to feed each summer before heading south to their breeding grounds. What a sight to watch these behemoths, which grow to about 50 feet long, as they breach the water’s surface and then dive down to feed again. Chances are, you will also catch sight of porpoises, sea lions and seals. After disembarking, you will drive deep into the remote Spasski River Valley to a raised observation platform to look for grizzly bears. They take their name from the gray, grizzled tips of their fur. Bald eagles and Sitka black-tailed deer are also commonly spotted here.

See the island’s most spectacular natural wonders, starting with a hike to Kilauea Crater in Volcanoes National Park.

The setting is so extraordinary that UNESCO deemed the park a World Biosphere site and a World Heritage site. To reach the crater, you will hike three miles roundtrip. The sights along the way will make it well worth the effort, as the volcano has been steadily erupting since 1983 and the surrounding countryside is dramatic. Afterward, you will pause for photos at magnificent Rainbow Falls, which is named for the rainbows that often form in the surrounding mist. Another photo opportunity awaits you at Liliuokalani Gardens, which pays tribute to the Japanese immigrants that worked in the sugarcane fields more than a century ago. Enjoy a local shopping stop where you can sample Hawaiian macadamia nuts before returning to the ship.
