Experience the joys of Andrea Bocelli’s world by visiting places that the revered tenor and his family own in and around his hometown of Lajatico. Your enlightening journey will begin at the Teatro del Silenzio, an open-air amphitheater that Bocelli’s architect brother designed. Andrea performs here but once a year; the rest of the time the theater is silent, filled only by the sounds of nature. The family’s influence also extends into wine making, as you will discover while touring the Bocelli wine cellars, which hold classic Italian wines produced on the Tuscan estate that the family has owned since 1730.

You will have the opportunity to sample the wines and indulge in a buffet-style lunch of Tuscan delicacies at the Officine Bocelli restaurant. The wines may include a red made entirely from Sangiovese grapes and a crisp, complex Pinot Grigio. Upstairs, you will find a museum with a collection of awards, photos and memorabilia that celebrates Andrea’s musical achievements.

Gain an understanding and appreciation of the far-reaching influence of Andrea Bocelli’s family, beginning with a concert by artists that study with Andrea’s son Matteo. The performance will be held in Villa Bertelli, a stately 19th-century residence in the seaside Tuscan town of Forte dei Marmi. Matteo inherited his father musical genes, having performed as a singer and pianist on his own and with his father. Matteo is also a skilled vocal coach, which you will recognize as soon as his students begin to sing.

At the nearby Alpemare Beach Club, which the Bocellis completely renovated, you will be treated to a tasting of wines from the Bocelli vineyards. The wines will be paired with a Tuscan appetizer, a perfect way to whet your appetite for the seafood lunch that will follow. The views will be as inspired as the cuisine, as the beach club overlooks a pristine stretch of sand and offers panoramic views of the majestic Apuan Alps.

Spend free time exploring Vernazza and Riomaggiore, two spectacularly beautiful coastal villages in Cinque Terre, an area so scenic that UNESCO named it a World Heritage site.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for an immensely picturesque drive to Vernazza, one of five coastal villages within Cinque Terre. All of them lie within the ruggedly beautiful Cinque Terre National Park, an area that UNESCO has deemed a World Heritage site for being a landscape of great scenic and cultural value.

Arguably the most photogenic of the villages, Vernazza is a wonderful setting to enjoy free time, meandering about wherever you please. The main square is a great place to start exploring, as the Church of Santa Margherita d'Antiochia stands here overlooking the natural harbor. Built in the Gothic-Ligurian style, the church features an octagonal bell tower that can't be missed, making it even easier to find your way around the pastel-colored town.

After a few hours strolling the narrow lanes of Vernazza, you will drive on to Riomaggiore, another absolutely gorgeous coastal village that clings to a steep hillside. The largest of the five villages, Riomaggiore has also been built into a steep rocky hillside, affording magnificent views of the sea.

Because of its size, Riomaggiore offers a few more points of interest than Vernazza. A 13th century castle looms over the historical center, the Oratory of St. Mary Assumption holds an intriguing 15th-century triptych and the St. John the Baptist church is ornamented with black-and-white marble.

This very scenic section of the Italian Riviera is characterized by small sandy beaches among the rocks, high cliffs, caves and tiny bays. What makes it so unique are the five appealing villages with their pastel houses stacked up the cliff face like an array of colorfully wrapped presents. They are connected to each other only by hiking trails, trains and an occasional boat. You’ll have the opportunity to explore three of these delightful hamlets on this tour. Manarola is the quintessential Italian seaside town, and here you’ll be free to wander on your own, perhaps stopping by the 14th century church or the pleasant beach. Then board a motorboat for a scenic cruise weather permitting, that will take you to the charming fishing village of Vernazza, crowned by a castle. The colorful buildings of this little gem cluster around a small cove.

Monterosso is said to be one of the most picturesque towns in Italy, and is considered a Cinque Terre “don’t miss.” After an introduction by your guide, you’ll have free time to explore the tiny shops and have lunch on your own. Take a look at the cathedral, lined inside with black and white stripped pillars, relax on the broad sandy beach, or stroll along the seaside boardwalk. Afterwards by train to reach Levanto for your return by bus to Livorno.

Florence, birthplace of the Renaissance, offers so many treasures of art and architecture that its entire historic center is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Fortunately with the highlights so centrally located, it is ideally suited to a walking tour. You'll stop at the Piazza Michelangelo for an overview of the city's tiled roofs, steeples and domes.

Visit the Accademia Gallery for an up-close introduction to Michelangelo’s famous David. The 17-foot-tall statue depicts not the king, but the youthful shepherd who slew Goliath. You’ll have a reserved time for entering to avoid the long line. Have a look at the exterior of the Cathedral (Duomo) of Santa Maria del Fiore, its elaborate Gothic façade covered in a mix of pink and green marble.

View the statues in the Piazza della Signoria on your way to the Ponte Vecchio, the medieval stone bridge that was the first bridge built across the River Arno, and has been well known for its goldsmiths and jewelers since the 16th century. Visit the beautiful Basilica of Santa Croce, burial site for the city’s larger than life citizens, including Michelangelo, Rossini, Machiavelli and Galileo. Enjoy some free time for lunch, to explore further or do some shopping.

    Wonders of Lucca & Pisa

Discover beautifully preserved Lucca, still within its Renaissance walls and chock full of churches, including a fine cathedral. You’ll see the Leaning Tower of Pisa, along with other impressive structures in Miracle Square. more...

Almost perfectly preserved Lucca still resides within high walls, though they are now topped by green parkland. Take a guided walk through the old town, with its medieval towers and nearly 100 churches. Stroll from piazza to piazza, and absorb the city’s history through its architecture. The Duomo, Lucca’s Romanesque cathedral, dates from the 12th century and features a façade with elaborate reliefs and columns.

The Gothic interior includes an image of Christ on the cross, supposedly carved by Nicodemus, a purported witness of the crucifixion. The Duomo also boasts Tintoretto's magnificent painting of the Last Supper. You’ll have free time in Lucca to explore, do some shopping, or sample the local cuisine.

Once a powerful maritime republic, and a rival to Genoa and Venice, Pisa offers a Renaissance splendor of its own. A short, guided walk leads to the dramatic Miracle Square, with an array of elegant buildings in Pisa’s own Romanesque style.

Here you’ll find the Campo Santo, a cemetery with some handsome architecture; the Baptistery, with a statue of St. John the Baptist on top of its dome; and the Duomo, Pisa’s medieval cathedral. You’ll recognize its freestanding bell tower immediately as the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. Galileo is said to have used the 180-foot tower during his experiments with gravity. Today it leans 14-degrees from perpendicular. Recently reopened, admittance to the tower is limited and is not included in this excursion.

Enjoy free time to explore the medieval town of San Gimignano and then visit a nearby farm for a traditional lunch and a selection of locally produced wines.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a picturesque drive through the charming Tuscan countryside towards the medieval walled town of San Gimignano. The architecture, particularly the 14 soaring tower-houses, has earned the town a UNESCO World Heritage Site designation. The exact purpose of the towers is disputed. Some believe that they were built as fortifications; others insist that the towers were merely meant to be signs of wealth.

Upon arrival, you have approximately two hours of free to experience the city at your leisure. You might start in the Piazza della Cisterna, which features the square’s namesake well, or the 13th-century Piazza Duomo, a square dotted with monuments and flanked by mansions. Regardless of where you choose to explore, hillside San Gimignano will exude a medieval atmosphere, much like it did at the height of its power and status.

Rejoining your coach, you will drive to nearby San Donato, a farm and winery characteristic of Tuscany. While enjoying a buffet lunch and wine tasting, you will discover that many of the ingredients are produced at San Donato, particularly the olive oil, saffron and four varieties of grapes.

The wines will be chosen upon your arrival, but it is likely that Chianti Classico, made entirely with sangiovese grapes, will be amongst the selections. Afterwards, you will transfer back to the pier in Livorno.
