Explore the more remote areas around Puntarenas by riding a vintage train inland and then boarding a boat for a cruise up the Tarcoles River, which is crawling with crocodiles.

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a brief drive to a Pacific Railroad train station and board a vintage train bound for Ceiba. The train will follow a route that was carved out of the jungle to transport coffee from the highlands to the coast.

Along the way, you will pass one small village after another. To enhance the journey, actors will entertain you with stories of the train’s early history and the challenges of transporting coffee.

Upon arriving in Ceiba, a town named for the tree sacred to the Maya, you will board a covered river boat and cruise the Tarcoles River. The waterway is absolutely teeming with thousands of crocodiles. Some of these fearsome reptiles grow up to 15 feet long, and it is quite a sight to see them basking in the sun on the riverbanks and silently stalking prey.

An abundance of birds also lives along the river, and you are likely to spot flycatchers, storks and kingfishers. You might also catch sight of the occasional hawk, parrot or monkey in the treetops. Following the cruise, you will head to a nearby hacienda to snack on fresh fruit while watching a folkloric show.

Marvel at the unique ecology within the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park as you walk through the forest to its spectacular Quebrada Valencia waterfalls.

Depart from the pier and drive east toward the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta National Park, a massive piece of land containing part of the world’s highest coastal mountain range. The mountains are the source of the Quebrada Valencia River and countless other streams that wind through the pristine countryside. The park is so revered for its ecosystem and cultural content that UNESCO declared it a Biosphere Reserve of Man and Humanity.

Upon arriving, you will begin a guided walk through the forest and over rocky terrain into a land still inhabited by several indigenous Indian tribes. Wildlife abounds, including Sierra parrots, tapirs and Paramo deer. A variety of exotic flora also flourishes, and you may pass in the shadow of towering wax palms and ceiba de leche trees.

It takes approximately a half hour to reach the waterfalls, and it’s well worth the effort. Emerging from the dense forest, the cascading waterfalls from the Quebrada Valencia River form a series of small, crystal-clear pools. The tropical setting couldn’t be lovelier or more serene. You will enjoy approximately one hour here to relax and wander about as you please, perhaps taking a dip in the refreshing waters. Tropical birds abound here so you may see some squawking in the treetops above. Afterwards, you will retrace your route back to the pier.

See the highlights of Antigua Guatemala with a “Hop On, Hop Off” bus pass that allows you to linger in favorite attractions before hopping on another bus to a different highlight.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a wonderfully scenic drive through the mountainous inland terrain and on to Antigua Guatemala. The city was the country’s capital until a series of earthquakes forced it to be moved to Guatemala City in the late 1770s.

Antiqua Guatemala was subsequently rebuilt, and the beautiful architecture that stands today spurred UNESCO to declare it a World Heritage site, as few Latin American cities feature so many intact colonial buildings. Be sure to notice the Italian Renaissance-inspired grid layout of cobblestone streets, another reason for the UNESCO recognition.

While touring with a complimentary “Hop On, Hop Off” bus pass, you can see the attractions that interest you to most. Architecture buffs might browse the many earthquake-resistant buildings constructed with decorative stucco in the regional barroco antigueño style.

Religious sites are also abundant with two of the most impressive being the Baroque-style La Merced Church and the 18th-century Convent of Capuchinas. The latter has been thoroughly restored and features a round tower surrounded by the nuns’ sparse quarters.

Shoppers will find a wide variety of excellent merchandise throughout town, including traditional textiles, eco-friendly house decorations and fine leather goods. A good place to start is the Casa de los Gigantos mall.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a leisurely one and three-quarters hour drive north through a gorgeous tropical landscape punctuated by national preserves. This verdant region exemplifies Nicaragua’s nickname, the “Land of Lakes and Volcanoes,” and all the while you will be edging toward volcanically formed Lake Nicaragua, a vast expanse of fresh water. It’s the only lake on earth with oceanic marine animals such as sharks and swordfish.

A magnificent colonial city nestled on the lake’s northern shore, Granada was founded as a trade center in 1524 by Spanish conquistadors. During the guided portion of your excursion, you will meander past colorful colonial architecture and hear about Granada’s turbulent history. The San Francisco Convent is one of the city’s oldest and most admired buildings, and it now houses a cultural center with fine pre-Columbian statues.

Following your guided tour, you’ll have plenty of free time to further explore on your own. Perhaps take a horse-drawn carriage ride along the cobblestone streets, shop in the serene central plaza, or sample the local cuisine from vendors with street carts.
