OVERVIEW

Delight in the freedom of exploring the medieval heart of Oviedo at your own pace, stopping at landmark attractions or simply wandering about as you see fit. After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a picturesque drive south to the Old Quarter of Oviedo, which was founded in the 8th century. The Alfonso II Plaza is an excellent place to start exploring, as the most historic buildings are around this pedestrian-only area. While your time is free to spend as you please, don’t miss the Cathedral of San Salvador, the tallest, most recognized building in Oviedo. Construction began in the 13th century, but the cathedral wasn’t completed for nearly 300 years, so the architecture is mostly Gothic with Baroque, Renaissance and Romanesque elements. The chapel inside is so important culturally and historically that it has been deemed a World Heritage Site. Further exploration of the Old Quarter reveals popular plazas such as Constitution Square and its main landmark: the Church of San Isidoro El Real. Constructed in 1681, the church is rather austere on the outside in contrast to its luxuriously decorated interior. If you wish to delve into Spain’s artistry, browse the Museum of Fine Arts. Its expansive collection occupies three buildings and includes works by Goya, Picasso and Dali. If strolling through an urban oasis sounds more inviting, head for serene San Francisco Park. Laid out in the 19th century, it was once a convent garden. After approximately three hours in Oviedo, you will return rejoin your coach and transfer back to the pier.
