Browse the museums in the eastern fjord country for a historical understanding of the area, while admiring the immense natural beauty between attractions. You will first pause for photos at Fjarðarheiði, a natural pass through the heath-covered mountains. It leads to Reyðarfjörður, where you will visit a museum that depicts Icelandic life during World War II, when Allied troops occupied the country to prevent a German invasion.

While stopping for a beverage at Randulff’s Sea House, you will get a glimpse into the herring industry that once thrived there. The fish used to be processed in the waterfront building, which is now a museum and restaurant. You will see plenty of other artifacts at the East Icelandic Maritime Museum in Eskifjörður, a village on a neighboring fjord. The building was constructed in 1816 as a general store. Besides fishing exhibits, the museum displays an unexpected collection of medical items.
