Skywalk & The Reversing Falls Rapids

Saint John, Bay of Fundy, New Brunswick

    Duration 2.5 hours

Experience the thrill of walking high above the Reversing Falls Rapids at the new Skywalk in Saint John. You will be suspended 120 feet above the water on the Skywalk, made using the most advanced technology in glass and steel, which offers an unparalleled view of this natural wonder.

Enroute to the Skywalk with your local guide, your tour begins by exploring Saint John’s highlights, including the colorful streets of Saint John’s historic uptown, a short walk along the water’s edge on Harbour Passage, and the breathtaking view from Fort Howe.

Stop for a photo at Fallsview Park, where the mighty St. John River meets the powerful tides of the Bay of Fundy, thus creating this unique phenomenon. Tides in the Bay of Fundy rise and fall up to 50 feet each day. Fallsview Park, one of the geosites in Stonehammer UNESCO Global Geopark, will give you a look at the Reversing Falls Rapids from the lowest point on land, before you make your way to the highest and most exciting lookout at the Skywalk. The rocks at the Reversing Falls Rapids exhibit one of the most interesting stories in the Stonehammer Geopark. Here you can see where two continents collided and view the exposed rock ranging from 50 million to 1 billion years old.

When you arrive onsite at the Skywalk, there is so much to see and do! Be brave and take a walk on the glass Skywalk, suspended 24 feet past the rock cliff’s edge over the Reversing Falls Rapids. Take in a short film that explains the tides in the Bay of Fundy, and how the unique Reversing Falls Rapids are created when the force of the Bay of Fundy collides with the mighty St. John River, forcing the river to reverse direction and flow backwards twice each day. The Skywalk offers an incredible vantage point to take a thrilling walk over the Reversing Falls Rapids.

    Need to Know:

Note: Although rare, severe weather can affect the availability of the Skywalk. Children must be able to walk on their own on the glass Skywalk.

    Full Day Iguazú Falls

    Buenos Aires, Argentina

    Duration 13 hrs

Fly to a national park on the border of Argentina and Brazil and behold the staggering power and beauty of Iguazú Falls by walking along trails and cat walks that give you extraordinary views of this amazing natural wonder.

After departing from the pier, you will transfer to the airport in Buenos Aires and fly directly to Iguazu, which lies inland near Iguazú National Park. The falls were discovered in 1541 by Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca and established in 1984 as a Natural World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Situated in Iguazú National Park, the falls are shared by both Brazil and Argentina.

The massive cascade is made up of 275 separate waterfalls that thunder down sheer cliffs in a majestic display of nature’s power. The falls are nearly twice as high and three times as wide as Niagara Falls, a fact not lost on Eleanor Roosevelt who reportedly said, “Poor Niagara,” when she beheld roaring Iguazu.

You will observe this staggeringly beautiful, natural phenomenon by walking a path either above or below the falls. Both trails are extraordinary in their own way.

Then, following a buffet lunch at a restaurant within the park, you will ride an eco-train to Devil’s Throat, which at more than 250 feet high is the single tallest waterfall within Iguazú. Once you are at the Devil’s Throat Station, you will have to walk approximately a half mile on a flat catwalk built over the Upper Iguazu River. Once you get to the end of the catwalk, you will find yourself at a strategic lookout point that rests on the side of the spectacular Devil’s Throat. It’s truly a glorious sight that you will not soon forget. The surrounding rainforest is equally impressive, as it is home to about 2,000 plant species and 400 bird species, including toucans, parrots and peregrine falcons.

Following your Iguazu Falls adventure, you will fly back to Buenos Aires and transfer to your NCL designated hotel.

Dzibilchaltun Mayan Ruins & Beach Break

    Progreso, Mexico

    Duration 5 hrs

After departing from the pier, you will enjoy a picturesque drive inland to the magnificent ruins at Dzibilchaltun. Until the arrival of the Spanish, the Mayans lived here for about 3,000 years. The site is considered to be the longest functioning city of the Mayan world.

Archaeologists have found thousands of structures here, although not all of them have been excavated. The name Dzibilchaltun translates to “place with writings on the stones,” and these messages reflect life in the ancient world.

Of all the buildings, the Temple of the Seven Dolls is the most impressive, certainly with regard to astronomy. The temple is oriented so that the doorways fill with light as the sun rises on the spring and fall equinoxes. During excavation, seven dolls were found in the temple, which are now displayed in an on-site museum.

After exploring the Mayan ruins, you will return to Progreso and stop at one of its most popular beaches. You might stroll along the shoreline, bask in the sun or simply relax and take in the seaside views.

You will have more than an hour to enjoy the music, snack on chips and salsa, and drink beer and margaritas at the open bar. If you choose, you'll have the option to purchase a nice meal of fresh seafood or Mexican specialties at the restaurant. Afterwards, you will return to the pier.

    Need to Know:

Note: This tour includes approximately 2 hours of moderate to strenuous walking/climbing that covers nearly 1 mile over a rocky, uneven path, plus any additional walking at the guests’ discretion during the beach stop. The steps to climb the pyramids are steep and can become slippery when wet. Guests should be in good physical condition. Light-weight weather appropriate clothing; sun cap; sunglasses; sunscreen; insect repellant; a swimsuit worn under clothing for those who wish to swim; a towel from the ship; and flat, comfortable walking shoes with a non-slip sole are recommended. Guests must be at least 3 years of age to take part in this tour. A waiver will be required by the local operator before being allowed to participate. Gibraltar and St. Michael Caves

    Granada (Malaga), Spain

    Duration 8 hours

Enjoy a leisurely drive across Spain’s gorgeous Costa del Sol to Gibraltar, where you will delve into its history, see unusual landmarks and meander about at will during free time.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for a wonderfully scenic, relaxing drive across southern Spain and on to the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar. Once across the border, you will board a smaller vehicle that is ideal for negotiating the narrow streets.

You will then pass through the former Genoese fishing village of Catalan Bay on the way to Europa Point, Gibraltar’s southernmost tip. Its lighthouse was constructed in 1841 and it continues to be a familiar landmark, as the strait is one of the world’s busiest waterways. You can expect spectacular views, and if it is a clear day you can spot Africa in the distance.

Another highlight will be St. Michael’s Cave, which was believed to be bottomless in Roman times. As you stroll the cavernous interior, you will see eerily illuminated rock formations and learn about the history of the cave, which was first inhabited in the Neolithic period.

You will also pause at the Moorish Castle, parts of which date to the 11th century. Other parts have been converted into stylish residences. Still, Gibraltar’s most famous residents are the free-roaming Barbary Apes often spotted on the rocks and in the lower town. You may see the tailless primates up close while shopping during free time before returning to Malaga.

Note: Note: Transfer time is approximately two hours each way; time on your own is approximately 1¾ hours (depending on traffic and border crossing). Please bring your passport. Depending on your nationality, make certain that you have any visas that may be required for you to enter Gibraltar.

As this excursion involves walking over uneven ground, and approximately 120 steps; therefore, it is not recommended for our more agile guests and physically fit guests and not available to wheelchair guests or those with mobility concerns. It is recommended that guests wear warm, layered clothing and comfortable, closed-toe walking shoes with tread. The duration of this excursion may vary. The visit inside the caves is not guided; guests will have to follow the signs and instructions.

Punta Ninfas & Penguins At El Pedral Lodge

    Puerto Madryn, Argentina

    Duration 7 1/2 hrs

Observe the abundant wildlife in the naturally beautiful Patagonian steppe, highlighted by a leisurely walk among a large colony of Magellanic penguins.

After departing from the pier, you will settle in for an immensely scenic drive along the New Gulf and on to rugged Punta Ninfas on the Patagonian steppe. The vegetation here is shrubby, wind-blown and an ideal wildlife habitat. Gray fox, llama-like guanacas and various species of seabirds, including oystercatchers and albatrosses, are found in this dry landscape.

Even so, penguins are the star attractions in this part of Patagonian, as you will discover from your base at El Pedral Lodge. Perched on a cliff, the lodge was built in 1904 and some of the period furnishing still remain, including the mahogany dining table.

From here, you will head to a nearby Magellanic penguin rookery for an extended walk among these highly social birds. If you hear the penguins braying like donkeys, it is simply the way they seek mates.

You can expect to see the penguins tottering about, tending to their young, interacting with each other, and perhaps hunting small fish just offshore. A group of penguins floating in the ocean is called a raft; a group on land is sometimes called a waddle because of their awkward walk.

Later, you will walk through a ravine where you can observe fossils from the Cenozoic Era, estimated to be at least 30 million years old. Lunch at the lodge follows, after which you will return to the pier.

    Need to Know:

Note: This tour involves large amount of walking, approx. 2hs. The tour is not available to wheelchair guests and may not be suitable for those with mobility concerns who are cautioned to carefully evaluate their personal level of stamina and ability.
