Ride through historical Alicante in the comfort of a trolley train, admiring the architectural treasures and pausing every so often for photos in the most scenic squares downtown.
After departing from the pier, you will ride the trolley train to the center of Alicante, the vibrant capital of the province of the same name. Founded by the Romans as Lucentum or “The City of Light,” Alicante was repeated attacked by sea until defensive walls were built in medieval times. Today, remnants of the city’s early architecture still remain, especially in the Old Quarter and other areas that you will see from the comfort of the trolley train.
Be sure to look high above the city atop Benacantil Mountain, where you will spot the seemingly impenetrable Santa Barbara Castle, which the Moors built in the 10th century. Casa Carbonell is another architectural gem that dominates the port. Built in 1925 as a residence for a wealthy textile merchant, the elegant marble and sandstone building has since been divided up into luxury apartments, offices, exquisite shops and fine restaurants.
You will also pass Canalejas Park, a late 19th-century urban oasis whose gates are adorned with sculptures of lions and dogs. Massive, more than 100-year-old ficus trees shade the park’s interior and provide a welcome setting. You will pause for photos at nearby Canlejas Square, as well as Luceros Square and Puerta del Mar Square in the heart of the city before returning to the pier.
