The Beauty of Little Cranberry Island
hrs Estimate Duration
Cruise to the charming hamlet of Islesford on Little Cranberry Island, a naturally beautiful spot where fishing and lobstering have been a way of life for generations.
After departing from the pier, you will drive through the gorgeous Acadia National Park to Northeast Harbor, whose name belies the fact that it’s located toward the southern end of Mount Desert Island. Here, you will board a covered, but open-air boat and cruise to Little Cranberry Island.
Along the way, you will pass the scenic lighthouse built in 1839 atop Bear Island and nearly uninhabited Sutton Island, which only has 20 homes. Your destination of Little Cranberry Island is part of the same chain of islands, although it boasts a harbor town: Islesford.
As you might imagine, life here is relaxed, informal and revolves around the sea. Sailboats and lobster boats are common sights in the harbor. Although a small community, Islesford is remarkably artistic. There are several noteworthy galleries and artists are often seen sketching and painting along the rocky shoreline.
You will gain a greater understanding of island life at the Islesford Historical Museum, a landmark building that opened in 1927. The exhibits celebrate the men and women that have fished the waters off Little Cranberry Island for generations. Models of ships, seafaring tools and historical photos of lobster fishing are among the most enlightening items.
After browsing the museum, you may stroll about on you own before retracing your route back to the pier in Bar Harbor.
